Since July is "Auto Theft Prevention Month" you may have already seen tips from your auto insurer or local police about how to protect your car from theft. Most of their advice is plain common sense: take your keys and valuables with you, lock your door, roll up your window, avoid parking in dark places, etc. Unfortunately some “tips” only perpetuate urban legends from twenty years ago. Car theft is a multi-billion dollar business run by professionals that has evolved since the 1980s when it last peaked during the "crack epidemic". Here are some misconceptions and facts about car theft today.

Car theft is a non-violent, "one-victim" crime. It's estimated that 90% of all stolen cars are involved in a secondary crime like robbery, drug transportation and people smuggling. That works out to about a million secondary crimes associated with car theft every year. In Canada, they figure a stolen car is over 200 times more likely to be involved in an accident than average. A stolen car is very dangerous.

It’s mostly joyriding - no harm no foul. The relatively few car thieves who do it “just for kicks” are usually underage or under-the-influence. Twelve-year-old kids don’t know how to drive safely even if they wanted to. Car thieves hopped up on meth know that police are under orders to avoid high-speed pursuit. So when they are being followed by a police cruiser, they escape by intentionally driving recklessly at high speed. With a life expectancy of five years, a meth addict knows no fear behind the wheel.

If your car is stolen, your insurance will make you whole. If you have ever sold your car to a used car dealer, you know there is a spread between what he pays you and his selling price. For most cars, itÂ’s 15-25%. Guess which amount youÂ’ll get from your insurer? You won't get anything for your inconvenience or mental anguish and donÂ’t forget your deductible. If you lose a $20,000 car, you are probably out $5,000.

A car alarm or steering wheel lock will stop most car thieves. After years of aggravation, car alarms are now viewed as a major source of noise pollution. They don’t do much to stop theft either. Most of us ignore them if we can. Alarms can be disabled in a few minutes by dedicated professionals and tweaking meth addicts alike. Likewise bypassing a steering wheel lock requires only a hacksaw and a few minutes. Active antitheft devices like “clubs” and “brakelocks” are only effective if you remember to use them.

DidnÂ’t you see Gone in 60 Seconds? Car thieves are cool. Would you leave your wallet filled with $25,000 in cash in your driveway? From a risk-reward perspective, car theft ranks near the top. It attracts international criminal gangs, most with ties to terrorism, drug dealing and prostitution. Car theft is also a major source of cash flow for drug addicts particularly meth users who cannot hold down a regular job. In the West, police estimate that over 70% of all car thieves are meth addicts. Not cool.

Car theft is just not that important compared to “serious” crime. Car theft is the largest property crime in the United States. The Highway Loss Data Institute, a US insurance industry-sponsored organization estimates that the average car theft costs the insurance industry over $6000. Adding the uninsured out-of-pocket costs to owners and the additional burden on the law enforcement and health care systems, CASI estimates the total cost of an "average" car theft is over $10,000. With over 1.2 million car thefts in 2002, car theft represents a drag of over $12 billion on the US economy every year.

Like the poor, car thieves will always be with us. Yes there will always be car thieves, but we can cut their numbers. In Europe, South Africa, Canada and Australia, governments have stiffened relevant regulations on carmakers and owners. The smart keys you see on high-end cars in the US have been mandatory on all cars in Europe for almost 10 years. With widespread uptake of electronic immobilizers and vehicle parts marking systems, car theft has dropped as much as 50% in some countries. To be sure, thieves are getting smarter but there are fewer of them. ItÂ’s just not that good a business any more. We can do the same here with an aggressive program of education, regulation and financial incentives to bring modern automotive security technology to the US. Until then, take the common sense advice and look out for your car.

The RFID Mandate Kit allows companies to comply with customer mandates by creating EPC compliant Global Trade Identification Numbers (GTIN). The software will then extract data from their ERP system which is then included in an RFID tag that is placed on each carton & pallet that is shipped. These kits are a one-stop solution to allow companies to continue selling to Wal-Mart, the Department of Defense, and other customers that are requiring RFID tags on shipments.

In 25 years of providing substance abuse treatment to adolescents, The Camp Recovery Center has never wavered in its commitment to helping teens get their lives back through education and recovery. In honor of this commitment, The Camp’s Meadow Lodge is recognizing teacher and mentor Stephanie Spungen for more than a decade of outstanding service.

“I couldn’t be more pleased to recognize Stephanie, not only for what she does but also who she is,” said Rebecca Cable, MS, CAP, ICRC, CST, the adolescent program director at The Camp. “Stephanie is a teacher who loves her students and inspires them to love themselves. She takes adolescents who have been expelled, fallen behind in credits and lost all hope, and motivates them to graduate and take their lives back.”

Academics are an essential component of adolescent drug treatment at The Camp Recovery Center’s Meadow Lodge. Teens receive individualized lesson plans and complete 20 hours of academic work each week. They also have the option to continue with independent study after finishing their drug treatment program, which allows them to live in a sober environment while doing schoolwork, attending 12-Step meetings and working part-time or volunteering.

“Our school program draws many teens and their families to The Meadow Lodge, and is a major contributor to recovery,” noted Cable. “Education is vital for long-term sobriety because it gives young people something to work toward and feel good about in their lives. Through education and recovery, teens find hope.”

By attending classes during treatment, teens are able to earn enough credits to stay on track in school. Teachers are part of a multidisciplinary team that works to provide each adolescent with the blend of academics, therapy and experiential activities that will best prepare them for long-term recovery.

In addition to a fully accredited academic program, The Camp’s adolescent substance abuse program uses a variety of other methods to reach at-risk youth, including a ropes course, experiential therapies, individual, group and recreational therapies, and gender-specific and mixed groups. Families are also invited to participate in their child’s recovery effort, which helps teens stay sober and avoid relapse.

“We have 14 students graduating this month, and we owe much of our success to dedicated people like Stephanie, as well as our case managers, clinicians and other staff in the adolescent unit,” Cable said.

“We are so privileged to have Stephanie working with the teens at The Camp,” added Melissa Preshaw, the community relations director at CRC Health and the former executive director at The Camp. “Her longevity with the program speaks volumes, and her efforts have been instrumental to the success of the adolescent unit.”

Fellow staff members at The Camp’s Meadow Lodge couldn’t agree more. When asked about Stephanie’s contributions, her colleagues used terms such as integrity, enthusiasm, advocacy, kindness and creativity.

“Stephanie is our mentor and our jewel,” said Wendy Nolan, a case manager at The Camp who has worked with Stephanie for several years. “What I admire about her is the way she values each person’s individuality and believes that every adolescent has something special to offer the world. She shares in their triumphs and never fails to comfort them when they are faced with a challenge.”

Zoe Winant, another of the program’s adolescent case managers, added, “Stephanie has been an important part of The Camp recovery experience for many years. She cares deeply about the lives of her students, and provides stability for teens who often have a long history of instability in their lives. She makes it possible for them to succeed.”

As grateful as the staff at The Camp is to have Stephanie as a teacher and coworker, Stephanie is equally happy to come to work each day. “I teach the kinds of students I love, the staff is incredibly supportive of me and there’s never a dull day,” she said.

In addition to more than 25 years of experience working with at-risk youth, what makes Stephanie such an influential teacher for teens struggling with substance abuse is that she has walked in their shoes.

“I have found that the more I’m willing to share, the more the students are willing to share,” she said. “My message to teens is ‘If I survived, you will survive.’”
