“The fact is, acupuncturists can see multiple patients per hour without sacrificing quality of care,” says Richman. “Once the needles are in, patients rest for 20-40 minutes on the table…alone…I don’t think it’s necessary to charge as much as most acupuncturists charge for the ten to fifteen minutes they spend with their patients.”

Often times hope is all they have to help sustain them mentally and keep them alive until they come into our rescue program. They hope for shelter from the elements, a soft bed, a full tummy, and freedom from pain and sickness. Beyond the basics needed for survival they desperately hope for just a few kind words and the loving touch of a human hand.

There are those folks who will say IÂ’m attributing a human emotion or desire to a dog, and that animals just arenÂ’t capable of thinking or feeling the way we do. But, anyone who has ever witnessed the shining hope in their dogÂ’s eyes that it might be time for a walk, a car ride, or maybe, just maybe, that piece of bacon will end up on the floor, will wholeheartedly agree that dogs do hope for these kinds of small miracles every day. Sadly, hope on a much deeper level is the last survival tool for abused and abandoned pets.

While more than one-third of home health care and nursing home organizations said they expect the government's economic stimulus package to increase use of healthcare information technology, another 52% said the stimulus package will have little or no impact on their businesses, according to a recent survey by IVANS, Inc. "Home health and nursing home care is expected to be one of the fastest growing provider segments over the next several years," said Clare DeNicola, IVANS President and CEO. "IVANS analysis reveals that while providers are optimistic about reform's ability to improve patient outcomes, budget concerns, understaffing, and the lack of clarity in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act regarding stimulus funding for long-term care has them concerned."

Providers Looking to Electronic Health Records to Improve Patient Care
According to the survey, nearly 70% of home health care and nursing home organizations say that electronic health records (EHRs) will have a positive impact on their businesses, and 56% of respondents have begun or plan to implement EHRs within the next year. Other key technology priorities for long-term care facilities include implementation of wireless networks, solutions to provide electronic documentation at point of care, and business continuity planning, the survey shows.

When it comes to sharing data outside the organizations, survey respondents were not as positive. More than 70% of respondents said they have no plans to participate in a Health Information Exchange (HIE). Experience with failed efforts in the past, lack of an immediate driver to move forward, and no standards were all noted as barriers to implementation of HIEs.

The survey, conducted by IVANS among 500 healthcare providers in May 2009, drew responses from more than 300 home health care and nursing home organizations, whose specific survey responses are reflected in this release. In addition, IVANS conducted in-depth interviews with selected long-term care organizations. This survey is one part of a series of initiatives to address the technology issues surrounding healthcare reform and how providers are responding. New Information and Consultation rights, in force since April 6, require companies with 50 staff or more to consult their employees on major changes. According to Simply-docs' Managing Director Iain Mackintosh, this has always been considered good practice.

On April 6, the Information and Consultation of Employees (ICE) Regulations were extended to apply to all employers with 50 or more staff, and many experts on employment law see this as a positive change for workforces in the UK.

Introduced in April 2005 for companies with 150 or more employees, the ICE Regulations set out guidelines for telling staff about the business's economic status and possible changes to the working environment. They establish employee rights for minimum requirements on consulting workers about prospective job losses, mergers or plans to reorganise the business.

Disclosures such as this could cause huge disruption to small businesses from a disgruntled workforce, but Iain Mackintosh, Managing Director of legal document firm Simply-docs, said it is generally best to have information out in the open.

'Although management sometimes fear talking to staff about what is happening in the company, it's usually good practice for small businesses to keep employees in the know, and that is why I support the new information and consultation rights for employees,' said Mackintosh.

'At times there can be legally sensitive information which must be kept under wraps, but when it comes to company performance it's usually best to be open.'

When it comes to restructuring or job cuts, along with considering the requirements of employment law and ICE Regulations, the main issue is whether to panic workers early on with unsettling news or surprising them with the news at the last minute. According to Mackintosh, there is a fine balance to strike.

'Employers should be clear about what they are hoping to achieve and why before communicating sensitive issues to employees, as vague messages can cause a high level of distrust and upset amongst employees.' he said.

'When there is a clear plan, workers should be informed of the proposals and the reasons for them and be given an opportunity to respond. Being kept in the dark could cause greater unrest in the later stages, which has the potential to be damaging to the company as a whole.

'Similarly, being given an unclear idea of plans could be equally damaging, and many small businesses lose their best performers as a result of the uncertainties they face in the light of vague announcements. Company changes can be life changing to individual workers, so keeping staff properly informed is crucial', said Mackintosh.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has also welcomed the new information and consultation rights. TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: 'Well-run companies have been informing and consulting their employees for years. Only bad managers who insist on keeping their staff in the dark about company decisions and their futures have anything to fear from this new legislation.'

Another point to consider, said Mackintosh, is that staff who feel valued are more likely to be loyal to the company. 'Employees who are given regular, accurate information about their jobs are likely to be more committed to the organisation and will probably generate better results for the company.

'Trust between staff and their managers is absolutely vital for a healthy working environment.'

NCDC, based in Asheville, provides NOAA's climate data to millions of people. ERC Broadband is a vital partner in NCDC's mission to acquire and deliver these data. ERC Broadband (www. ercbroadband. org) announced today that it has signed an agreement with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) (www. ncdc. noaa. gov) to provide broadband services to NCDC. NCDC, based in Asheville, is part of NOAA's Satellite Data and Information Service and provides NOAA's climate data to millions of people. ERC Broadband is a vital partner in NCDC's mission to acquire and deliver these data.

ERC Broadband first began providing NCDC access to its broadband communications backbone in 2004. The new agreement, which will be in place for five years, formalizes the partnership between NOAA/NCDC and ERC Broadband and underscores how ERC Broadband is helping Asheville build its role and reputation in the national climate services community.

ERC Broadband, a project of the Education and Research Consortium of the western Carolinas, is a non-profit network that furthers technology in the western Carolina by supporting education, healthcare, all levels of government, and economic development. It is not community owned, but it is a community resource.

Working with public, private and non-profit concerns, ERC Broadband's goals are to grow the regional technical infrastructure and bring next generation Internet and advanced technology to the region. By accomplishing its goals, ERC Broadband is improving the overall quality of life in the area. ERC Broadband is celebrating its fifth anniversary this month.

"The new agreement stems from recognition that ERC Broadband is enhancing the national presence of NOAA's NCDC, and that of the National Weather Service as well," said Hunter Goosmann, General Manager of ERC Broadband. "ERC Broadband is creating awareness of and interest in climate data, and we are working with NCDC to establish and support the growth of its programs throughout the United States."

"ERC Broadband's fiber optic network is the lifeblood of NCDC, " said Sharon LeDuc, Deputy Director of NCDC. "A tremendous volume of data from NOAA's radar stations and satellites is digitally communicated to NCDC at high speed. Over 2.9 petabytes, or 1015, of data are stored at NCDC. NCDC scientists are stewards of the data and its quality, and this stewardship is essential for NOAA to provide these data to the public. ERC Broadband's network enables NCDC to provide massive amounts of information to private companies, academic centers and other government agencies that utilize our services in research and in the development of climate services products."

Proposed Dietary Guidelines for Americans Sharply Criticized

A peer-reviewed article appearing in the October issue of the journal Nutrition calls into question the Report of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee

New York, NY (Vocus) October 4, 2010

The October issue of the journal Nutrition contains an article by Hite et al. that soundly criticizes the June Report of the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) (http://download. journals. elsevierhealth. com/pdfs/journals/0899-9007/PIIS0899900710002893.pdf). The authors of the article, who are associated with the Nutrition and Metabolism Society, stress that the Report fails to conform to acceptable standards of evidence-based medicine. The article went on to point to the numerous occasions the DGAC failed to consider recent scientific results while selectively referring to evidence that supported predetermined conclusions.

The Dietary Guidelines serve as the foundation for nutritional information for Americans. The Guidelines highly influence nutritional labeling and drive food industry marketing and product development. They also influence nutrition education, research, state and national policies and school lunch programs. Because the Dietary Guidelines are the product of the Institute of Medicine and the Department of Agriculture, they have generally been immune from criticism. However, growing consumer confusion and the national obesity epidemic have made it clear that the Guidelines are totally ineffective.

The authors contend that a panel of independent scientists without ties to nutritional policy is required in order to impartially evaluate all of the available data.

Morton Satin of the Salt Institute maintains that, "The Guidelines have become more a reflection of ideology than science. Before the 2010 process began, key members of the DGAC were widely quoted in the press providing their expected outcomes, thus compromising the process and making final recommendations a forgone conclusion. When we transmitted a comprehensive inventory of peer-reviewed evidence to the DGAC, they selectively picked only data that supported their preconceived agenda."

The DGAC Report blames the inability of Americans to follow the Dietary Guidelines for health problems, but the article by Hite et al. explains that in the past thirty years national consumption has followed the direction of the Guidelines’ recommendations with the result that the rates of obesity and Type 2 Diabetes have skyrocketed.
