Sledgehammer – A Bioterrorist Attack – A Small Pox Epidemic – Fiction at It’s Best

Sledgehammer –A Bioterrorist Attack – A Small Pox Epidemic – Fiction at It’s Best

This science fiction thriller discusses the potential threat of terrorists using smallpox as a biochemical weapon against us. Author Paulo Reyes is a ER Doctor and did extensive research for this book and feels there's a clear and present danger to our country today.

Pompano Beach, FL (PRWEB) November 5, 2005

What happens when bioterrorists unleash the biochemical “smallpox” and time is of the essence to stop its deadly spread? That drama unfolds in this medical fiction thriller, Sledgehammer. Terrorists have successfully used smallpox as a biochemical agent with plans to spread it into several sport arenas, airports, and shopping malls to maximize its deadly effects. If not for the quick action and prior medical expertise of the main character, Dr. Max Kroose, fatalities could be in the millions. This emotional science fiction book will have you eagerly awaiting every page as the story unfolds.

In Sledgehammer the first case of smallpox is presented in an emergency room in Los Angeles as the hospital staff faces the challenges of the contagious disease spreading quickly and affecting patients and staff alike. What adds further drama to the story is the discovery that this particular form of smallpox is the particularly aggressive form -- sledgehammer smallpox, or malignant smallpox. Sledgehammer smallpox develops a non-typical rash and patients succumb to the disease fairly rapidly, which further increases the urgency to find a cure.

What makes the book even more interesting is that the events unfolding in the ER symbolize real events that occur in emergency rooms daily. The author, Dr. Paulo J. Reyes, is a practicing Emergency Room Doctor and First Responder to disasters in Los Angeles, California with a medical career spanning 25 years. His medical expertise helped to create a medical environment that medical personnel, fans of medical TV dramas, as well as all science fiction fans will enjoy. Added to that, the characters are well developed and passionate in their quest for answers.

Dr. Reyes is also the author of Health-Care Reform or redistribution of Cost? and is currently working on the sequel to this book. Realizing that there exist a clear and present danger of a terrorist attack today leads him to agree with the proponent of voluntary smallpox vaccinations and his desire to spread the word of the potential dangers through his books.

With today’s terrorists’ threats, the growing concern of a biochemical attack, the fear of a global pandemic, and the excellent way in which this book was written, it’s an excellent book to add to your collection. Stop by our site at http://www. pauloreyes. com/ (http://www. pauloreyes. com/) to order the book or get the latest news events and additional information on smallpox.

The Vodka of the Kremlin Takes London Society and Their Events by Storm

The Vodka of the Kremlin Takes London Society and Their Events by Storm

New vodka shot is the new black in the Creme de la creme of London society.

(PRWEB) June 28, 2006

Adored by the Gliteratti and now the Toast of London Society it is rumoured to be a favourite of Jacobi-Anstruther-Gough, Tamara Mellon, Caprice, Jo Whiley, Michelle Collins, Frost & French, Julien Macdonald and Natalia Vodanova.

Kremlyovskaya Vodka, fondly referred to as "Kremly" by those who know it best, is a superb, premium authentic Russian vodka - the only kind in its class. This historic brand is handmade in tiny batches, using Russia's legendary winter wheat and nature's softest glacial waters. Distilled three times and purified nine times, Kremly has a distinctively smooth, clean taste - each drop guaranteed pure perfection. This treasured art of making superior vodka is a craftsmanship that has been passed down from generation to generation since 1699. Once “The Vodka of the Kremlin” it has now succeeded in winning the approval of the world's most discerning connoisseurs: the Russians.

To enjoy the superb taste and whole experience of Kremly, Russians use savoury bites and ensure that it does not go straight to their head. This trendsetting and historic ritual is now becoming a fashion statement amongst the Glitterati in London. Take a gherkin, dip it in sour cream, sample, dip it in honey and then consume. After eating the gherkin down a small shot of Kremly. This can be repeated again and again. Russians view this as a responsible way to drink vodka throughout their long cold winter days and evenings.

However, before sampling this ritual one must ensure they adhere to the Russian toasting:

Assign a member of the party to become the toaster. They will then pour the Kremly and announce the toast. The toaster looks each member in the eye, as they touch the bottom of their glass to the top of every other glass in the group……looking each member in the eye as they do so. Each member then says ‘Za zdarovye!’ (‘To your health!’) and takes their drink.

With this trendsetting vodka taking the market by storm the British way of drinking vodka with mixers will surely be a thing of the past.

Recession Drives Irish Dental Patients North

Recession Drives Irish Dental Patients North

New Research from RevaHealth. com shows Irish Patients are shopping around for Dentists

Dublin, Ireland (PRWEB) March 19, 2009

The number of people in the Republic looking for dental treatment in Northern Ireland (http://www. revahealth. com/dentists/northern-ireland) increased by nearly 75% in February, according to RevaHealth. com, the search engine that lets people find and compare clinics anywhere. The recession is clearly biting hard, as interest in expensive "cosmetic" dental treatments is down by almost 25% too.

With the value of Sterling near its all-time low against the Euro, patients are increasingly prepared to travel north to save money on dental care. The recession and subsequent tightening of purse-strings mean that consumers are eager to find the best value dental clinics for their needs and more and more Irish people are turning to RevaHealth. com to compare their options.

RevaHealth. com also found that this drive to save money is reflected in the numbers of people putting off high-end treatment. Interest in dental implants (http://www. revahealth. com/dentists/ireland/implants), veneers, crowns and bridges is down by 24.32%. Tax relief in Ireland was recently lowered from the higher rate of 41% to the standard rate of 20%, making expensive work even more costly for many patients.

Caelen King, CEO of RevaHealth. com (http://www. revahealth. com) commented, "Our research clearly shows that Irish patients are choosing to shop around for dental treatment, and visiting Northern Ireland is an increasingly popular option. RevaHealth. com's easy-to-use search engine lets people in Ireland find the clinic they are looking for whether it is around the corner or across the border."

“Cleaning Up in Energy Services (NR) (CHK) (IO)”, posted May 13, 2005

No matter how you do it, drilling for oil and gas is complicated and messy. The energy services company Newpark Resources (NR) makes the task easier -- and a couple of patent-protected technologies at Newpark should mean it will make a lot more money on the job in the coming years.

At least thatÂ’s what insiders are telling you with their buying patterns. In early May, two insiders bought $290,000 worth of stock for $6 to $6.40, according to Thomson Financial.

ThatÂ’s enough at a small company like this to support a sell-side scenario that projects Newpark stock could rise 25% to hit $7.50 in the next twelve months. Newpark, which recently traded for $6, helps energy producers in three ways.

Drilling fluids

Energy producers need specialized drilling fluids to do things like stabilize drill bits at great depths, or carry debris back out of drill holes. Many energy companies use fluids that are a mix of oil and salt. They get the job done – but they wreak havoc with the environment.

In contrast, Newpark has specialized water - and glycerin-based drilling fluids that don’t use oil or salt. So they are easier on the environment. They also happen to make drilling easier and faster, says finance chief Matthew Hardey, because they do a better job of stabilizing drill bits and leaving drill holes in better shape for production. “So we have been able to capture significant market share working against competitors,” says Hardey.

This might help explain why the company thinks drilling fluid sales will grow 50% to $432 million in 2005. (Overall revenue for the most recent quarter was up 24% to $129 million.) Newpark also has a lot of room to expand abroad. Drilling fluids make up the biggest part of NewparkÂ’s business, accounting for over 50% of revenue.

Door mats for oil rigs

Because drilling takes place in harsh conditions and undeveloped locations, production companies need to create temporary access roads and a stable footing around sites for heavy equipment. To do so, they rent or buy specialized wooden or plastic matting from Newpark. Use of matting is growing in Canada especially, as producers move further north into tougher terrain. This segment brings in over 20% of NewparkÂ’s revenue.

Increased drilling has sparked healthy growth in both of these business lines in the past year. But it also means Newpark can raise prices. Drilling fluid prices were up over 5% in the past year, but matting prices rose by more than 25%. Much of that extra revenue falls straight to the bottom line.

Waste clean up

This is the smallest part of Newpark’s business – at about 15% of revenue – and growth has been disappointing. But all that could change, thanks to a proprietary purification technology Newpark has licensed from a Mexican company. The technology uses ultrasonic sound waves to tweak chemical reactions used in the clean up of dirty fluids that are a byproduct of energy production.

The technology will be rolled out at two sites in Wyoming this year. But because the technology can clean up fluid without affecting its temperature much, it could be a big hit at energy companies producing oil from Canadian tar sands. In a process called “steam assisted gravity drainage,” energy companies use steam injections to produce oil from Canadian tar sands. “With our technology, we can make fluid reusable and put it back into their boilers at high temperatures,” says Hardey. This makes the process faster and cheaper. Down the road, the technology may be used by utilities to clean up emissions at coal-fired plants.

Revenue from this technology won’t really start to kick in until 2007 – but it could be big in the long term. The company will learn more as it carries out tests in Canadian tar sand production this summer. “It is hard to project the path for the new water business, but it could be the most significant driver of growth at Newpark for the next ten years,” says Hardey.

The bottom line: Caylon Securties has a 12-month price target of $7.50 for the stock, or 22 times expected 2006 earnings of 35 cents per share. Given the upturn in drilling activity and NewparkÂ’s proprietary edge, that could be conservative.

Insider update: In early May insiders at Chesapeake Energy (CHK) bought $20 million worth of stock at around $20 per share. Insiders at Input/Output (IO) purchased $370,000 worth at $5.90. These purchases confirmed earlier bullish signals at these energy companies, which you can read about here: http://www. investorideas. com/insiderscorner/Articles/Four_Natural_Gas. asp (http://www. investorideas. com/insiderscorner/Articles/Four_Natural_Gas. asp); and at this link: http://www. investorideas. com/insiderscorner/Articles/Seismic_Imaging. asp (http://www. investorideas. com/insiderscorner/Articles/Seismic_Imaging. asp).

BooksoftheYear. com interviews and features "The Attitude Doc," Alexandra Delis-Abrams, about her most recent book,"Attitudes, Beliefs & Choices."

(PRWEB) January 26, 2006

Alexandra Delis-Abrams, Ph. D., "The Attitude Doc” or “The Doc," has established her web site www. theattitudedoc. com and has created her products in order to promote the benefits of attitude awareness & healing. Her most recent book,‘Attitudes, Beliefs & Choices,’ is an exceptional resource that is designed to enhance your personal journey.

As a psychologist, Dr. Delis-Abrams was aware of the lack of feelings awareness materials available to help children acquire a feelings vocabulary. In 1987, she founded and became president of ABC Feelings (www. abcfeelings. com), an educational corporation dedicated to the emotional well-being of children and adults through the development and international distribution of emotional awareness. This award-winning product line is distributed to the four corners of the globe, supporting adults and children to use these greatly needed communication tools.

In addition, Alexandra has established her web sites www. theattitudedoc. com and Life Change Consulting practice in Sun Valley, ID, where she assists clients and workshop guests to implement personal change for growth and happiness. Click here to read the testimonials

Alexandra offers seminars, workshops and motivational talks. Whether she is exploring feelings in a classroom, presenting a keynote address, counseling a client or holding an online seminar, she radiates a positive and fun, sincere and inspiring message through her words and presence.

Dr. Delis-Abrams is an Advanced Holistic Health Practitioner, Fellow to the American Institute of Stress, member of the Assn. for Transpersonal Psychology, member of the International Speakers Network, and adjunct faculty at Boise State University.

In a recent interview at BooksoftheYear. com, Dr. Delis-Abrams said, "Our attitude is a point of view from which we 'hold' life, or a filter through which we 'see' life. Attitude determines our degree of happiness. I wrote my book as a legacy for my granddaughters. I had two then and now have four—all girls. The most recent are twin girls. Although the book is 500 pages, one chapter can be read at a time, as the feeling word 'speaks' to you. Three different feeling words are associated with each letter of the alphabet offering the reader the opportunity to explore and delve into the personal stories relating to the feeling. Each chapter also includes client histories, tales for nature enthusiasts, animal lovers as well as parents, grandparents, and teens. Even children’s art is included. Everyone benefits from reading my book. Reflection Time at the end of each chapter is a unique feature, introduced so the reader can explore more deeply the personal meaning of that word."

When asked what she hopes to achieve with "Attitudes, Beliefs & Choices," Dr. Delis-Abrams said, "I would like to see it printed in Italian, French, Spanish, German for starters. Feelings are universal as are our attitudes. This is a book for all cultures. Mass consciousness would change if more people followed the suggestions in the book. I want my book to be in the drawer of the nitestand in hotel rooms—right next to the Bible. I want it to be a household word like Kleenex. I would also like readers to grow to understand themselves better and be willing to improve their lives. Embracing the idea of exploring beliefs would be a monumental change in society, contributing to peace on the planet."

My Friends all Laughed When I Told Them What I Got My Wife for Valentines Day  A Life Insurance Policy?

My Friends all Laughed When I Told Them What I Got My Wife for Valentines Day Â… A Life Insurance Policy?

Loving husband and father or four explains why he chose this unusual gift.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) February 3, 2005 -

“Okay. I’ll admit it was not nearly as romantic as flying her parents and my parents all the way to Italy so that I could walk her to a beautiful plaza and scream at the top of my lungs how much I love this woman while draping a huge string of diamonds around her neck,” says 45 year old Lance Forbisher, “But I did score some points for ensuring that if I die unexpectedly, she and our four children could be taken care of without her having to sell the one diamond she already has!”

Mr. Forbisher had been thinking about getting a new life insurance policy. When his company went through a downsizing and he unexpectedly lost his employer-provided coverage, he felt had to take action quickly.

“I was worried something like this could happen. A friend of mine lost his job and, because of a health problem that was discovered last year, he could not get coverage. That is pretty scary.”

Mr. Forbisher goes on, “I checked with the agent who sold me our homeowner’s and auto policy, but I was concerned that he could only offer policies from one company. I wanted to get some other options to consider.”

So Mr. Forbisher went online and started shopping. His search led him to www. TermSelect. com, an online agency with a large choice of policy options offered by top-rated companies.

“Unfortunately, Mr. Forbisher’s situation is quite common,” says Colleen O’Connor, TermSelect’s marketing director. “We were able to show him quite a few inexpensive options from some of the best insurance companies in the US. In less than 10 minutes we had completed all of his application information and had sent it off to underwriting. We hope to be able to deliver his policy before Valentines day.”

SensoTech's breakthrough Wireless Temperature Monitoring

SensoTech's breakthrough Wireless Temperature Monitoring

SensoTech's breakthrough Wireless Temperature Monitoring and Recording system is a big hit with hospitals and health care organizations that are challenged with limited IT support or are looking for a fully web-based monitoring system without the associated risks of outside hosting.

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) June 25, 2008

SensoTech's breakthrough Wireless Temperature Monitoring and Recording system is a big hit with hospitals and health care organizations that are challenged with limited IT support or are looking for a fully web-based monitoring system without the associated risks of outside hosting.

This breakthrough technology for automated temperature monitoring, designed and manufactured in Sweden, has been utilized by European medical, pharmaceutical, food, and other industries since 2004. SensoTech (www. sensotechnologies. com) is now extending its services to US establishments.

Since its recent introduction to the US market, SensoTech has already been selected as a preferred vendor by CHW, the largest not-for-profit hospital provider in the West.

Glendale Memorial Hospital, California Hospital and Medical Center, Northridge Hospital, Presbyterian Intercommunity Hospital, and Fremont Memorial Hospital are a few examples of hospitals that have already implemented the system.

SensoTech Inc. is the only solution provider to offer wireless digital temperature sensors with integrated and advanced firmware which includes web server, and database. Non volatile programs are embedded in the chip and devices instead of external software, databases, or web servers. To the organizations it means zero software installation, no database or web server maintenance, no outside hosting, and no hidden costs.

SensoTech's fully automated temperature sensors, repeaters, and receivers do all the work. A customer can easily move the temperature sensors around or add more, since no wiring is required. Hospitals, blood banks, pharmacies, and labs have all show great interest in SensoTech's product because they can use it without having to rely on their IT departments for any hardware installation, software installation, or technical support.

The SensoTech solution offers a cost-effective and integrated solution for product inventory protection with a high return on investment. "We no longer have to log the temperature information manually, which has improved our operational efficiency and saved a lot of our nurses valuable time." says Edward Lord, Glendale Memorial Hospital's Director of Engineering. "The lack of any software installation and any need for IT support has been an added benefit for my group."

The SensoTech Solution
SensoTech's wireless system meets or exceeds JCAHO, HACCP, AABB, QA and other regulatory guidelines for the maintenance of temperature monitoring records. Sensors may be placed at any location to be monitored such as refrigerators, freezers, computer rooms, water pipes, and cabinets. No wiring is needed, and up to 65 sensors will transmit to a single host receiver. The central receiver connects to a local network, router, or PC, and receives signals from digital sensors that do not require calibration from up to 650 feet away or, with a repeater, up to 1,400 feet away. Accurate temperature measurements are received from the sensors every 60 seconds into a secure and patented application within the central receiver, which tracks and logs all data collected. If a receiver logs an out-of-range condition, an alarm notification will warn users by email, pager, phone, or an external alarm. Administrators or managers can use any computer on their network, or a remote desktop, to access and review the data logs, print reports and graphs, and sign out alarm notifications needed for compliance purposes.

Headquartered in San Diego, California, SensoTech also has an office in Simi Valley, California. A sales representative can be reached by calling 1-800-279-3101, or by emailing salesinfo(at)sensotechnologies. com. Detailed product information is available at www. sensotechnologies. com.

Since 1996, Cybernet has been designing and producing all-in-one PCs that are contained within a keyboard or LCD monitor. They also manufacture medical all in one computers, and fanless industrial PCs. Cybernet’s mini PCs are customized in accordance with specifications unique to their customers’ industry and business operations. Cybernet is focused on four main vertical markets: health care, banking, government and education.

Cybernet’s primary sales focus has been on selling direct to customers and resellers via an in-house sales team, and occasionally using indirect sales channels such as distributors. In 2010, Cybernet made the decision to expand their distribution network in order to offer their resellers more choices. They sought partnership agreements with the big three distributors whom might offer the best pricing and service, consistent with Cybernet’s own standards for customer satisfaction and personalized service. Partnership agreements are currently in place with Synnex, Ingram Micro, and CDW. Cybernet’s resellers are now offered that choice. As part of this new distribution plan, Cybernet will continue to sell directly to corporate enterprise customers, but they will also be offered the option of dealing with CDW, who also sells directly to customers.

Even if resellers purchase Cybernet’s products through one of the distributors, however, Cybernet still provides the tech support to the end user customers for all of their products. Cybernet’s tech support is U. S.-based, and they have a reputation for fast, efficient service and even an option for loaner units while the product is being repaired.

Says Cybernet Senior Vice-President Ali A. Bagheri, "Expanding our distribution network is the right thing to do for our growing reseller base, and moves us toward our long-term goal of expanding our reach within the vertical markets we currently serve. It helps us serve our resellers better, and they benefit from having more pricing options. As part of this business model, however, we still insist on providing the tech support to our resellers’ customers. We stand behind our products’ quality and reliability, and we do what it takes to keep end users’ operations running smoothly."

Is Sanity Possible in This Crazy World? Only if We Reconnect with Reality, Says Licensed Psychologist

Is Sanity Possible in This Crazy World? Only if We Reconnect with Reality, Says Licensed Psychologist.

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) May 3, 2004

Mental Health Month is a good time to drop out of the crazy world around us and find some sanity. For 25 years, the Center for the New Psychology has helped people reconnect with reality by sponsoring outdoor workshops in Nature.

The Center sponsors Nature Workshops on the beach and in the forest so that people can directly experience earth's healing, calming and reassuring realities. Director of the Center, licensed psychologist, Dr. Doris Jeanette has developed a holistic approach to emotional, mental and physical health. As the Philadelphia Inquirer said, "Her Co-therapist is Nature."

She leads group experiences in Cape May, NJ or Pt. Pleasant, PA "to bring people back to their senses. As the day goes by, most people are able to relax into their bodies and sink into the field of gravity. This naturally reduces blood pressure, eases aches and pains, improves breathing and calms nerves," notes Dr. Jeanette.

After a day in the forest people report that they are more aware of their bodies, have a stronger sense of self, notice their physical surroundings and are less judgmental. In other words, they return to sanity and they have more access to their inner strengths, which they can then use.

Reconnecting with the real energy of the earth is therapeutic and can help us achieve and maintain good mental health. As Jeanette reminds us, "Our nerves need a big dose of solid, physical reality, and thank the goddess, there is plenty of reality all around us on Mother Earth."

The Center for the New Psychology sponsors free alternative psychology Teleseminars, innovative workshops, professional development and consultations around the globe. Imagis Retains Boston-based Pembridge Venture Partners

Imagis announces that it has entered into an engagement letter with Pembridge Venture Partners ("PVP") to provide strategic financial advice. PVP is the private-equity affiliate of The Pembridge Group LP (http://www. pembridgegroup. com), a premier Boston-based investment firm ("Pembridge Group").

(PRWEB) January 5, 2002

Vancouver, BC, January 3, 2002: Imagis Technologies Inc. (“Imagis”) (OTCBB: IGSTF; CDNX: NAB; Germany: IGY) announces that it has entered into an engagement letter with Pembridge Venture Partners ("PVP") to provide strategic financial advice. PVP is the private-equity affiliate of The Pembridge Group LP (http://www. pembridgegroup. com (http://www. pembridgegroup. com)), a premier Boston-based investment firm ("Pembridge Group"). Pembridge Group acts as advisor to Pembridge Fund Management ("PFM") and Pembridge Venture Partners. PFM is the asset management arm of the firm and manages the Concert series of technology hedge funds and the Symphony fund-of-funds. PVP provides growth capital to formative companies in the areas of software, data-storage, networking, and the health sciences. Pembridge manages over $600,000,000 in capital, and its funds have consistently posted some of the highest returns to investors in the alternative asset management industry. Pembridge funds are eligible to accredited non-U. S. institutions only and are currently closed to new investors.

Mr. Treyton L. Thomas, Chairman of Pembridge Group and Managing Partner of PVP explained the firm’s interest in Imagis by saying, “The biometrics space offers demand and growth metrics that are extremely attractive to us. While the U. S. Congress just overwhelmingly approved a $20 billion plan to arm the United States against terrorism, enhanced domestic airport security is but one component of the Imagis growth curve. Unlike other facial recognition software, the heuristic algorithms in their technology allows for the recognition of patterns beyond the human face that can aid in criminal investigations and case preparation. While airport security garners the most media attention, there are other important international applications such as bolstering security at nuclear facilities that were integral to the former Soviet Union, global border control, and identification of child victims of appalling crimes. In a post-attack world, customer demand now dictates that the security industry deliver products that anticipate and prevent, rather than merely react. The confluence of Imagis’ current valuation, gross operating margins, and parabolic growth prospects make it the most compelling investment in the biometrics sector today.”

Under the terms of the engagement letter, PVP has agreed to assist the Company as one of its non-exclusive financial advisors. The activities of PVP will include providing strategic capital markets advice, including mergers, banking advisory and review of any potential investment banking relationships, strategic alliances, financing, or any other capital markets needs of the company. Imagis issued to PVP 50,000 warrants, with each warrant being exercisable into one common share in the capital of the Company at a price of CDN$2.20 per share for a period of two years.

Mr. Iain Drummond, President & CEO of Imagis, commented; “We are pleased that Pembridge supports the market opportunities for our Company and acknowledges that our facial recognition technology has significant applications in a number of sectors in security and law enforcement. With their assistance, we anticipate an increase in our Company’s profile in the investment community that will ultimately bring value to our shareholders. We look forward to our combined effort to exploit a number of strategic opportunities.”

Imagis further announces that it will grant, subject to regulatory approval, 160,000 options to directors of the Company. The options are exercisable into common shares in the capital of the Company at an exercise price of CDN$2.20 per share for a term of five years subject to certain vesting provisions.

FibreSpan Makes Dark Fibre Connectivity Affordable

FibreSpan Makes Dark Fibre Connectivity Affordable

FibreSpan (fibrespan. co. uk), the UK’s leading independent dark fibre telecoms specialist, has made bespoke dark fibre an affordable connectivity solution for multi-site organisations throughout the UK.

UK (PRWEB) March 26, 2006

FibreSpan (fibrespan. co. uk), the UK’s leading independent dark fibre telecoms specialist, has made bespoke dark fibre an affordable connectivity solution for multi-site organisations throughout the UK.

Fibre still remains the high bandwidth connectivity solution of choice, but until now it has not been an affordable option for many. FibreSpan has invested in developing patent-pending microduct technology that enables it to install fibre networks in far less time and significantly lower cost than traditional methods.

Peter Caplan, ex-founder and Chairman of Telecom Express, and Robert Bicket, ex-founder and Managing Director of Ocean Safety, established FibreSpan when they both sold their respective companies to join forces and exploit this emerging technology.

Together they have taken the solution a step further than its traditional counterparts by combining affordable dark fibre connectivity with a fixed cost unlimited bandwidth model. Unlike traditional leased lines, the cost of FibreSpan connectivity remains constant regardless of bandwidth. Organisations pay a fixed annual cost over the term of the contract, whether they run a Megabit, Gigabit or Terabit circuit, and there are no limits on the type and number of services they can run.

This means they have the freedom to control the speed of their network, deploy state of the art hardware, keep their own pace with technology and implement next generation high-bandwidth applications - when the time is right for them.

“Our bespoke dark fibre solutions have proved to be extremely beneficial for multi-site organisations across the country. But the proposition of unlimited bandwidth at a fixed cost consolidates this into a highly competitive and future proof network solution,” comments Robert Bicket, Chief Executive of FibreSpan. “Recent demand is evidence that organisations are now seeking access to resilient, scaleable, yet affordable fibre networks like ours”.

The new proposition is so compelling that FibreSpan has experienced rapid growth in its client base by securing an increasing number of both public and private sector clients over the past twelve months. “We are now able to provide a more attractive alternative to other Telco’s and enable customers to create a high-bandwidth network that breaks the economic and performance barriers traditionally imposed,” adds Bicket.

FibreSpan’s deployments already exist across the country and many UK organisations are already benefiting from the technology. Individual deployments range from 350 metres to 10 kilometres, including: Alstom Plc, Cardiff University, Imperial College London, Kingston Hospital NHS Trust, Northern Rock Plc, Sohonet Ltd., Leeds Metropolitan University, Manchester University and London Borough of Havering.

FibreSpan was established in 2002 as an independent UK statutory utility, licensed by the DTI and regulated by Ofcom. The company designs, installs, operates and leases private dark fibre circuits, focusing on meeting the specific communication needs of healthcare, education, local authorities and other multi-site organisations.

Over the years FibreSpan has developed its patent-pending microduct technology to achieve its goal of making fibre optic connectivity a viable solution for

Organisations throughout the UK. The technology enables fibre deployment at up to five times faster and at half the cost than traditional methods.

Gene Therapy for Diseases of Pet Animals is a Fast Developing Area

Gene Therapy for Diseases of Pet Animals is a Fast Developing Area

Research and Markets (http://www. researchandmarkets. com) has announced the addition of Animal Biotechnology - Technologies, Markets and Companies to their offering.

Dublin (PRWEB) April 18, 2006

Research and Markets (http://www. researchandmarkets. com (http://www. researchandmarkets. com)) has announced the addition of Animal Biotechnology - Technologies, Markets and Companies to their offering.

This report describes and evaluates animal biotechnology and its application in veterinary medicine and pharmaceuticals as well as improvement in food production. Knowledge of animal genetics is important in the application of biotechnology to manage genetic disorders and improve animal breeding. Genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics are also being applied to animal biotechnology.

Transgenic technologies are used for improving milk production and the meat in farm animals as well as for creating models of human diseases. Transgenic animals are used for the production of proteins for human medical use. Biotechnology is applied to facilitate xenotransplantation from animals to humans. Genetic engineering is done in farm animals and nuclear transfer technology has become an important and preferred method for cloning animals.

Biotechnology has potential applications in the management of several animal diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, classical swine fever and bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The most important biotechnology-based products consist of vaccines, particularly genetically engineered or DNA vaccines. Gene therapy for diseases of pet animals is a fast developing area because many of the technologies used in clinical trials humans were developed in animals and many of the diseases of cats and dogs are similar to those in humans.

Molecular diagnosis is assuming an important place in veterinary practice. Polymerase chain reaction and its modifications are considered to be important. Fluorescent in situ hybridization and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays are also widely used. Newer biochip-based technologies and biosensors are also finding their way in veterinary diagnostics.

Biotechnology products are approved by the Center for Veterinary Medicine of the FDA. Regulatory issues relevant to animal biotechnology are described.

Approximately 72 companies have been identified to be involved in animal biotechnology and are profiled in the report. These are a mix of animal healthcare companies and biotechnology companies. Information is given about the research activities of 9 veterinary institutes. Important collaborations in this area are shown.

Share of biotechnology-based products and services is currently estimated to be $2.8 billion out of the total animal healthcare market of $18 billion. This is expected to grow to $5.1 billion by the year 2005 in a total animal healthcare market of $23 billion.

Carpe Diem String Quartet, Peter Soave To Appear At SIUE Jan. 30

Carpe Diem String Quartet, Peter Soave To Appear At SIUE Jan. 30

The Carpe Diem String Quartet, whose recent CD was selected for the 2009 Grammy Award Entry List, and internationally acclaimed bandoneón and concert accordionist Peter Soave will perform the music of the late Aldemaro Romero at 7:30 p. m. Saturday, Jan. 30, as part of the Arts & Issues series at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Edwardsville, Ill. (Vocus) January 19, 2010

“Aldemaro Romero Sr. was an international recording star with RCA Victor and one of the foremost Latin music orchestra leaders in the world,” said Grant Andree, coordinator of the Arts & Issues series. “We are proud to have his son here to introduce the Arts & Issues audience to the important legacy his father left to the international world of music.”

The composer’s son, Aldemaro Romero Jr., is dean of SIUE’s College of Arts and Sciences and will be conducting during the Jan. 30 concert on stage at the theater in SIUE’s Dunham Hall.

“And, we’re pleased that the fine musicians of the Carpe Diem Quintet and Peter Soave himself will grace our stage to help Dean Romero in this important musical presentation,” Andree said. “This should be an entertaining as well as enlightening evening for our audience.”

The elder Romero’s reputation as a fine arranger-conductor led him to collaborate with popular orchestras and singers such as Dean Martin, big band bandleader Stan Kenton and popular Latin percussionist Tito Puente. Romero was credited with creating a new form of Venezuelan music, known as Onda Nueva (New Wave) that was influenced by Brazilian Bossa Nova rhythms.

He also composed Five Paleontological Mysteries for accordion and string quartet that will be performed that evening by Carpe Diem and Soave, and will be conducted by the composer’s son. The piece, by the way, was dedicated to Soave and named in honor of Dean Romero, who, in his work as a research biologist, discovered the five new fossils.

Carpe Diem, in residence at Ohio Wesleyan University, is a musical group that has captured the imagination of audiences around the world, earning critical acclaim with its electrifying performances. Committed to revitalizing the chamber music concert experience, Carpe Diem is using innovative programming, thematic concerts and popular music for younger generations, cameras and video to assist in the visual presentation, as well as speaking from the stage to better engage the audience.
The quartet continues its project of recording the nine string quartets of Sergey Taneyev on the Naxos label, selected for the aforementioned 51st Grammy Awards Entry List this past year in four categories—best classical album, best chamber music performance, best new artist, and best engineered album–classical.

The hallmark of Peter Soave’s performances is the excitement he generates on stage with his execution and sensitivity of touch while playing the bandoneón or the accordian. A native of Detroit, Soave was a young phenomenon on the international competition circuit by the age of 16. He is the only player to win a gold medal in all four major world championship accordion competitions.

Deeply inspired by the Argentinean composer Astor Piazolla, Soave began including the characteristic bandoneón (also known as the tango accordion) in his performances as well, and now regularly performs on both instruments. He has recorded several CDs, both as a solo artist and with orchestra. He received the 2001 Detroit Music Award for best classical recording and in 2003 the Detroit Music Award for best classical instrumentation.

Tickets for Carpe Diem Quartet and Peter Soave are $27; SIUE students, $13; SIUE employees and retirees, as well as all senior citizens, $25. Ticket information, subscription rates and ticket sales are available on the Web site: artsandissues. com, or by calling (618) 650-5774.

Free Community Lecture on Embracing the Ethnic Diversity of British Columbia: Strategies for creating healthy communities

Free Community Lecture on Embracing the Ethnic Diversity of British Columbia: Strategies for creating healthy communities

The International Education for Peace Institute, in association with the Justice Institute of British Columbia, is offering a free evening seminar on Thursday, 19 August, 2004 to offer insights into how we can achieve healthy, and violence free communities.

(PRWEB) August 6, 2004

One of the wonderful features of living in British Columbia is the richness and diversity offered with the inclusion of people of different races and ethnicities intermingled within the province. Living within a multicultural and multiracial community also brings challenges. Racism, bullying, conflicts and tensions are common elements within communities where people are not equipped with skills to overcome the differences that come from exposure to different cultures.

Differences do not need to be barriers that lead to conflict and aggression. Together, we in British Columbia, can embrace the Ethnic Diversity that exists within our communities, and learn to use the unifying elements to create healthy, vibrant and creative communities.

The evening lecture, presented by Dr. Hossain B. Danesh, will be held at the Justice Institute of British Columbia in the Theatre. The Justice Institute of BC is located at 715 McBride Boulevard, New Westminster, B. C. and will take place on 19 August, 2004 from 6:30 PM - 8:30PM. Admission is free.

Professor Dr. H. B. Danesh is the founder and director of the International Education for Peace Institute in Switzerland. Dr. Danesh is also former president of Landegg International University as well as a professor of Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies. He is an author, international lecturer and consultant, with more than thirty years of academic and clinical experience as a psychiatrist.

Dr. Danesh’s areas of research and expertise include the causes and prevention of violence, marriage and family therapy, death and dying, consultation and conflict resolution, ethics, spiritual psychology and world order and peace studies. Dr. Danesh is the author and creator of the internationally acclaimed Education for Peace Program, first piloted in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2000.

This lecture is open to members of the general public interested in creating healthy communities, Community Planners, Community Activists, Politicians (Federal, Provincial, Local), representatives of Municipal Police departments and RCMP, representatives from Aboriginal and Multicultural Communities, Social/Family workers, Educators, Students, Practitioners, Mediators, Conflict Resolution workers, and Media representatives.

Rochester Slip and Fall Attorney Reminds Pedestrians to Follow Up on Icy Sidewalk Accidents

Rochester Slip and Fall Attorney Reminds Pedestrians to Follow Up on Icy Sidewalk Accidents

Rochester slip and fall lawyer Scott C. Gottlieb says the failure to remove snow and ice from sidewalks can, in some circumstances, expose property owners to liability.

Rochester, NY (PRWEB) November 16, 2010

With the first snowfall of the season due to arrive any day now, it’s important to remind pedestrians of their rights if they are injured in a slip and fall on an icy sidewalk, Rochester personal injury lawyerScott C. Gottlieb says.

“The Rochester City Code places responsibility on property owners and first-floor tenants to keep sidewalks adjoining their property free and clear from snow and ice,” Gottlieb says.

“If you are injured in a slip and fall on a snowy or icy patch of sidewalk, that means you may be able to hold the property owner or first-floor tenant accountable for your injuries and losses, which could include medical expenses, lost income and pain and suffering,” he says.

Gottlieb’s law firm, Scott C. Gottlieb, Injury Law Attorney, represents the victims of slip and fall accidents throughout New York’s Upstate Region, which traditionally sees one of the longest and snowiest winter weather seasons in the country.

According to WHEC. com, the first snow of the season in Rochester has fallen between the dates of November 8-20 seven times in the last 10 years. The National Climatic Data Center shows that Rochester averages 92.3 inches of snow per year, with 7.5 inches in November.

Under Section 104-11 of the Rochester City Code, the ground-floor occupant and owner of a building or lot cannot allow snow or ice to collect or remain on sidewalks adjoining the property past 9 a. m. if the snow fell the previous night after 8 p. m. If the snow falls after 9 a. m., then it must be removed by 8 p. m. that evening.

Even when the snow is removed by city contractors or employees using plows, the occupant and owner have a duty to remove the remaining snow and ice, according to the city code.

“The law clearly defines the duty owed by the owner and occupant,” Gottlieb says. “Also, if you suffer a fall on a private walkway of a home or business, the owners or tenants may be responsible as well.”

If you suffer a fall down injury on an icy or snowy sidewalk, Gottlieb encourages you to first attend to your health and, if possible, to collect as much information as you can at the scene of the accident. This would include obtaining the name and insurance information of the property owner or tenant and the names and contact information of any eyewitnesses.

He also says it is a good idea to get photographs using a camera, such as one found on a cell phone, because of the likelihood that evidence of the snow or ice could be easily removed.

“All too often, people who are seriously injured in a slip and fall don’t follow up on the accident,” Gottlieb says. “However, you should take steps right at the scene of the accident in order to protect your rights and interests.”

Autism Speaks Celebrates Second Annual World Autism Awareness Day with an Array of International Events on April 2

Autism Speaks Celebrates Second Annual World Autism Awareness Day with an Array of International Events on April 2

New York Stock Exchange Bell-Ringing, Yoko Ono Lennon Event at the UN, and "Walk on the Web" Highlight Global Autism Awareness Activities

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 13, 2009

Autism Speaks, the world's largest autism science and advocacy organization, today announced a series of national and international events to mark the second annual celebration of World Autism Awareness Day, a global effort to heighten awareness about a disorder affecting millions of individuals and families around the world. WAAD is a result of a resolution passed unanimously by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008, making autism one of only three health issues to be recognized by the UN with its own "day." The April 2 events will take place on multiple continents and in venues ranging from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange to the United Nations and the Worldwide Web.

Autism Speaks Co-Founders Bob and Suzanne Wright, together with Autism Speaks Board Member Alison Niederauer - who has a son on the autism spectrum and is the wife of NYSE Euronext CEO Duncan Niederauer - will join other families affected by autism to kick off World Autism Awareness Day (WAAD) at the New York Stock Exchange, where they will ring the opening bell for the second consecutive year.

"Last year's WAAD events were a remarkable success, and we are confident that the scope of this year's activities will help elevate autism as a topic of international discussion and exploration," said Suzanne Wright, co-founder of Autism Speaks. "On this day, we will highlight the tremendous contributions of individuals with autism, as well as the strength and dedication of their families. Together, we are inspiring compassion, inclusion and hope by building a global autism community whose voice is finally being heard."

Later that morning at the United Nations, artist Yoko Ono Lennon will unveil an original work called "Promise Piece" that she created for, and was inspired by, WAAD. "Promise Piece" is a unique work of art, done in a style Ms. Ono has been working in for more than two decades, in which a larger work is broken apart into smaller pieces. The 58 signed puzzle pieces will be auctioned throughout the month of April, with the caveat that they are to be "re-united" and re-assembled when the cure for autism is found. The event will be sponsored by the Chilean Mission.

"I am proud to partner with Autism Speaks in promoting awareness and advocacy for children with autism," said Yoko Ono. "World Autism Awareness Day is not only a day to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, but also to celebrate another big step towards healing our world."

To raise awareness about autism in various nations, several first ladies and dignitaries have recorded WAAD public service announcements. They include: Mrs. Ban Soon-taek, wife of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon; Dr. Liri Berisha, Spouse of the Prime Minister of Albania; Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, First Lady of Egypt; Mrs. Sarah Brown, wife of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; Mrs. Vivian Fernandez de Torrijos, First Lady of Panama; Ms. Dalia Rabin, daughter of former Prime Minister of Israel; Mrs. Touré Lobbo Traoré, First Lady of Mali; and Señora Margarita Zavala Calderón, First Lady of Mexico. The ads will air on CNN on April 2 as well as in countries around the world, raising awareness about World Autism Awareness Day's events and advocacy and services available around the globe.

In New York City's Central Park, Autism Speaks and the Ad Council will sponsor a unique awareness event to highlight the 1 in 150 prevalence rate for autism.

The World Health Organization and the Qatar Mission will host a panel luncheon on the subject of autism at the United Nations on April 2. Bob Wright will be a participant in the panel discussion, which will be attended by permanent representatives and other UN officials.

The day will conclude with the premiere of the contemporary dance piece "beyond. words" by dre. dance, a New York-based contemporary dance company at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center. The special performance combines dre. dance's propulsive choreography with interpretive actions gleaned from typical autism spectrum behavior. Artistic Directors Taye Diggs and Andrew Palermo created the piece to shed light on the beauty and spirit of individuals with autism. This fundraising event supports the work of both organizations and includes admission to the performance, a post-performance reception and a post-performance question and answer period with Diggs, Palermo, the dre. dance company and representatives from Autism Speaks. For tickets, contact Eileen McDonough at emcdonough@autismspeaks. org or call 917-475-5060.

This year, Autism Speaks has teamed up with Wubbzy - star of Nick Jr.'s whimsical animated preschool television series "Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!" - to promote WAAD. Autism Speaks and the Ad Council produced television and web banner public service announcements (PSAs) featuring Wubbzy. A special web site, Walk with Wubbzy on the Web, is a "virtual walk" that is an extension of Autism Speaks' Walk Now for Autism, which takes place in more than 75 communities across the United States, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom. The Walk with Wubbzy on the Web site provides ideas about how people can celebrate World Autism Awareness Day in their local community, and also accepts donations to fund autism awareness and research efforts. Last year's Walk Now on the Web raised more than $40,000.

The WAAD web site, www. worldautismawarenessday. com features links to autism organizations, autism information that can be printed in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Korean, Russian and Spanish, and a list of worldwide WAAD events. To date, there are events planned in more than a dozen countries, including Aruba, Bahrain, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Panama, Romania, the U. K. and the U. S.

On December 18, 2007, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 62/139 declaring April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day in perpetuity. This UN resolution established WAAD as one of only three official disease-specific United Nations Days, with the goal of bringing the world's attention to autism, a pervasive disorder that affects tens of millions.

World Autism Awareness Day shines a bright light on autism as a growing global health crisis. WAAD activities help to increase and develop world knowledge of the autism epidemic and impart information regarding the importance of early diagnosis and early intervention. Additionally, WAAD celebrates the unique talents and skills of people with autism, and features community events around the world where individuals with autism are warmly welcomed and embraced.

About Autism
Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by behavioral challenges. Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one in 150 children in the United States, affecting four times as many boys as girls. The prevalence of autism has increased tenfold in the last decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have called autism a national public health crisis whose cause and cure remain unknown.

About Autism Speaks
Autism Speaks is the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. Autism Speaks funds more than $30 million each year in new autism research, in addition to supporting the Autism Treatment Network, Autism Genetic Resource Exchange, Autism Clinical Trials Network, Autism Tissue Program and a range of other scientific and medical programs. Notable awareness initiatives include the establishment of the annual United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day on April 2 and an award-winning, multi-year national public service advertising campaign with the Ad Council. Autism Speaks' family services efforts include the Autism Video Glossary, a 100 Day Kit for newly-diagnosed families, a School Community Tool Kit and the distribution of community grants to local service providers. Its government relations division has played a critical role in securing federal legislation to advance the federal government's response to autism, and has successfully advocated for insurance reform to require insurers to cover medically-necessary autism therapies. Each year, Autism Speaks Walk Now for Autism fundraising events are held in more than 70 cities across the country, as well as Canada and the United Kingdom.

Autism Speaks was founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright, the grandparents of a child with autism, and provides a voice to hundreds of thousands of families. To learn more about Autism Speaks, please visit www. autismspeaks. org.

SymbianOne Recognizes excellence in wireless and mobile application development with the 2003 Best of Symbian Awards

Excellence in wireless and mobile application development recognized by recognized leader in Symbian ecosystem

Victoria, B. C., Canada (PRWEB) January 15, 2004

SymbianOne is pleased to announce it has selected the recipients of its first annual "Best of Symbian" Awards. The awards are meant to recognize expertise and innovation in the area of wireless and mobile application development, particularly those involving the Symbian OS.

2003 has seen Symbian lay strong foundations for the creation of a mass market for the smart phone in 2004 and beyond. There has been a healthy growth in the number of device shipments, a steady stream of new phone announcements and increased interest from the broader mobile developer community in creating applications for Symbian OS. Picking out the most significant products for the year is no easy task as there are many players in the Symbian ecosystem that deserve recognition, but after much deliberation here is our pick of the year's best. The following companies have been recognized in the awards:

Most innovative application... Dreamscribe - DreamScribe provides a method for creating PIM records, contacts, tasks, calendar items, using the joystick to select most of the features of the record and minimizes the need to enter text

Most innovative Device... Siemens SX1 - the SX1 is our choice because the physical design of the phone has thought through the paradigm shift that a rich user interface on a small device creates.

Most innovative Development tool... AppForge's MobileVB - MobileVB uses the capabilities of Microsoft's Visual Basic to create controls which a developer can use to build applications which closely mimic the native interfaces of a range of mobile platforms including Palm, Pocket PC, Series 60, Series 80 and UIQ

Most Innovative Market Initiative... Nokia's Try and Buy program - the most serious effort to date to educate the broader consumer community about the abilities of their phones

The complete document describing the applications and award winners can be found at http://www. symbianone. com/features/Best_of_2003_1203/best_of_2003.html (http://www. symbianone. com/features/Best_of_2003_1203/best_of_2003.html). Telecare: English Councils Cannot Afford Their Telecare Plans

Telecare: English Councils Cannot Afford Their Telecare Plans

Councils up and down the UK have been awarded a grant to help get up to 160,000 new people benefitting from telecare and preventative technology. At £500 per person the grant sounds like a lot, but in fact probably will not be sufficient to cover all the costs associated with implementing their plans.

Halifax, Yorkshire, England (PRWEB) March 17, 2006

James Batchelor, Managing Director of Alertacall Ltd, today challenged English councils with social services responsibility which will be in receipt of the Preventative Technology Grant (PTG) from April 2006 with the possibility that the grant will not be sufficient to cover all the costs associated with implementing their plans to introduce telecare into their mainstream services and, at the same time, to achieve the Department of Health’s target number of people to benefit from the grant.

In a letter sent to directors of adult social care services he said:

“…the PTG gives you £500 to spend per person. (£80 million divided by 160,000 people.) £500 per person may sound generous, but it isn’t. The cost of equipment may realistically be only one third to a quarter of what you need to allow when you take into account all your change management costs for staff training, service re-design, setting up response services, etc.

“A typical, simple telecare equipment package costs £200 - £350. Therefore, you should be considering spending more like £850 per person. That is an extra £350 per person to find in addition to your PTG funding. If you are anticipating supporting people with ‘high level’ care needs, such as those with dementia, where the potential cost-benefit from reducing residential care is most attractive, you will need to spend considerably more.”

James then went on to explain how his company, Alertacall, could help release PTG funding to spend on high level care people (such as those with dementia) who are often a priority for telecare plans. Alertacall can do this by providing low-cost telecare packages to councils which they could give to people to self-install. In doing so, councils could easily meet half their telecare population target and still have up to £960 available to spend on the rest. They would also be making a strong contribution to local prevention strategies – the very point of the Preventative Technology Grant. The scheme is therefore in tune with the aims of the recent Government White Paper Our Health, Our Care, Our Say.

Alertacall’s public website, where people can listen to endorsement of Alertacall by Claire Rayner and sign up for Alertacall’s service, is: http://www. alertacall. com (http://www. alertacall. com)

Notes for editors

1) Full details of Alertacall’s offer to councils are available via a password-protected website. Journalists who would like to be given access or find out more information, should contact James Batchelor.

2) Alertacall Ltd. is the company that has developed and provides the Alertacall service and it was incorporated in England in the summer of 2004. The company is based in Halifax, Yorkshire, England.

The Alertacall concept was conceived after a period of growing concern by the company's founder for the safety of two relatives who both live independently, one of which is elderly and the other who has from a chronic illness. What he discovered was that no service existed to help deal with these concerns day-to-day, at least not one that met three very important criteria:

A) the service should not require the user to have to carry anything at any time

B) it must not rely on the user having to actively request help because they might not be able to do so. When people cannot request help that's probably when it's needed!

C) it should be low cost and affordable, so that it can benefit a wide range of people

Alertacall was created to address all these requirements and was launched after a period of extensive testing.

3) Telecare grew out of the social (pendant) alarms industry that most people are familiar with in sheltered housing-type schemes. It is defined as ‘the continuous, automatic and remote monitoring of real time emergencies and lifestyle changes over time in order to manage the risks associated with independent living’. Telecare equipment ranges from devices a person triggers themselves to raise an alert to a control centre, to systems that monitor the person’s well-being and/or environment.

4) Preventative Technology Grant. During the financial years 2006/7 and 2007/8 councils with social services responsibilities in England will be receiving a Preventative Technology Grant of £30 million and £50 million respectively (£80 million in total). It was announced by Chancellor Gordon Brown in his Spending Review Announcement, June 2004, in which he said councils were expected to benefit 160,000 or more people by the introduction of telecare technology into their care packages and support systems. Councils received details of their individual Preventative Technology Grant amounts in December 2005.
