Consumer Group: Fast-Food "Health" Survey From Animal-Rights "Cancer Project" Group Should Be Ignored

Recommendations are anti-meat propaganda, not mainstream health advice.

Today, the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom warned health reporters and editors about a deceptive "survey" of fast-food meals being distributed by an animal rights group calling itself The Cancer Project. As reported in this morning's Los Angeles Times, the Cancer Project survey recommends meatless meals such as veggie burgers and cheeseless bean burritos as the only way to avoid eating "unhealthful" fast food.

Center for Consumer Freedom Director of Research David Martosko said: "It's important to distinguish animal rights propaganda from genuine health advice. This so-called Cancer Project is basically an offshoot of PETA. Nothing more."

The Cancer Project is led by Neal Barnard, a past president of The PETA Foundation. More than two-thirds of the Cancer Project's budget comes directly from the wealthy founder of the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida. The Cancer Project's parent organization, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, has also received more than $1.3 million from PETA.

Earlier this year, The Cancer Project demanded that hot dogs be excluded from the National School Lunch Program. The single biggest study ever to examine meat and colon cancer diagnoses, a 2004 Harvard University project, found no link at all between the two.

Martosko added: "It's pure fiction to promote veggie burgers and bean burritos as a cancer-prevention strategy. This is just as much a part of the animal rights agenda as doing away with circus elephants and seeing-eye dogs. If you wouldn't take dietary advice from PETA, you shouldn't trust this 'Cancer Project' group either."

Convincing parents or other elderly family members to give up driving may be one of the most difficult and awkward conversations a person might have with their family member. Hopefully that conversation never has to happen. Many older people remain competent drivers, but the normal processes of aging can hamper driving ability as can medications that affect reflexes or judgment or both. Adult childre need to be alert to whether it’s time for their parents to hang up the car keys.

Statistics show that drivers over 75 are at the same risk for an accident as teenage and young adult drivers – the 16-24 year old age group. Just as with teenagers, though, it’s only a segment of the population of older drivers that are dangerous behind the wheel. Many others have very safe records. They use seat belts, they don’t speed, drive recklessly or get behind the wheel after drinking. These older drivers may restrict their driving to daytime, avoid bad weather and rush hour traffic. Overall, they drive fewer miles.

How do people in this situation know what to do? It can be difficult to decide when the best time is to take away the keys. That’s why it’s a good idea to start talking with them about driving and monitoring their driving long before there may be a problem.

Observing how a family member drives is probably the most important part of this process, but it’s also important to keep tabs on their health. To continue to drive, seniors and their families need to monitor their response time, vision and hearing. They – or the children involved in this decision - also need to talk with their doctor about the medications they take and whether those medications will affect their driving ability. Here are some things to check on for parents or family members who may be reaching their driving age limit:
 Do they have a regular vision checkup and keep their corrective lenses prescriptions current?  Do they seem to have trouble hearing and, if so, have they had their hearing checked? Do they need hearing aids but refuse, for reasons of frugality or vanity, to get them?  Do they have a car that fits their needs?  Have they considered a defensive driving program aimed at senior citizens, such as AARP’s Driver Safety Program?  Do they have memory problems? Night Driving
While many older people give up driving at night older drivers who continue to do so are presented with a unique set of challenges. At any age night driving is more dangerous than daytime driving. Talk with family members if they drive at night to make sure that they don’t drive when they’re tired or when they’ve taken a medicine that makes them drowsy. And encourage them to carry a cell phone they can use if there’s a night-time emergency.

Defensive Driving Courses
Defensive driving courses like the AARP Driver Safety Program can have a positive impact on older driver behaviors. While younger drivers are likely to get speeding tickets or tickets for reckless driving, older drivers more typically fail to yield right of way, turn improperly and don’t make proper lane changes. After defensive driving courses those behaviors often change and research on the program’s effect showed a reduction in tickets issues to drivers who completed these types of courses. One additional benefit – completing a course like this can lead to an automobile insurance discount.

Have a ride and a conversation
A trip to the store or any other routine trip is a good opportunity to observe their driving. Initial indicators of driving skill problems may be there even before getting in the car like scrapes, dents or scratches on the car or on items in the garage where the car is parked. Other indicators that there may be trouble ahead are behaviors observed while in the car like riding the brake, getting distracted easily from the road ahead or confused about what to do at an intersection, signaling incorrectly, parking oddly or hitting the curb or becoming confused with directions, signals or signs. Indicators that call for immediate attention are things like running red lights, getting lost in familiar places or confusing the gas and brake pedal.

A spouse, an adult child or the family doctor is usually the best person to start the conversation. Most people would rather hear from a family member about concerns about their driving. The last person they want to hear it from is a police officer. Find a conversational opening – a discussion about a recent accident that was in the news or a discussion of stressful driving conditions may give a lead in to a discussion about driving capabilities. This won’t be an easy conversation but it’s one that has to happen.

It's time when safety is in question and a person's ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) is severely impaired: getting in or out of bed or a chair, using the toilet, bathing or showering, dressing and eating. When fears that an elderly person may leave the stove on, get lost, fall down stairs or get hurt in any way, and family helpers or in-home caregivers are not an option--it is time to act.

1. PLANNED MOVE: Start the discussion of end-of-life living options early, prior to illness, to discover what the wishes really are. By revealing what your own preferences are and sharing where your Will and legal papers can be found, if is easier to ask where their documents are, what you should know, and how they want to be cared for when the time comes.

Stay at home with caregivers who will come in as needed, or live-in, to help with care.

Move to Assisted Living. Consider a “multi-level” facility that offers senior apartments, increasing levels of assistance, all the way to full skilled nursing and dementia care. This way, as more services are needed another move is not necessary, and the friends made along the way often progress with them.

Consider buying a comprehensive Long-term Care Insurance policy prior to illness, which would cover the cost of the long-term care options. Buy it as a gift.

Consult an Elder Law Attorney to get Durable Power of Attorney for Health and Financial in place, so if your loved one becomes incapacitated, you can make decisions for them. Realize that without the DPOA it is very hard to move someone out of their home against their will, which can occur when trying to reason with someone starting to get dementia.

Become familiar with local services ahead: senior centers, Adult Day Care and Adult Day HEATH Care centers (for those with dementia), multi-level assisted living facilities, skilled/nursing homes and those with full dementia care, local Alzheimer’s Association.

Try a facility by using it for a short-term respite stay so all the details can be evaluated prior to full time placement and commitment.

2. UNPLANNED MOVE: Usually occurs after a crisis such as a stroke or broken hip, often after a hospital stay, when 24-hour care is needed for patient safety in a skilled nursing facility.

The hospital discharge planner will help with location options. Call your local Area Agency on Aging or Department of Aging for available options. It needs to be close enough to family for visiting/monitoring often. Ask to speak with the Ombudsman who monitors the facilities in that area to ask if there are any pending/past lawsuits on the places you are considering.

Visit facilities on the weekend and talk to numerous families who have loved ones living there and ask for their opinions. What do they wish they knew before they moved their loved one in, and what do they recommend you check into prior to placement.

Ask the administrator and get in writing:

What is their patient to staff ratio? Are they hiring right now and how many are needed? What training has their staff had? How many RN’s are on staff? Is there a doctor on staff or how far away? How many hours of direct care is done? Who is the temporary staffing agency? Have criminal checks been run on all employees? Are there any residents with communicable diseases? What is covered and what are extra charges? Do they offer support groups for the family? What are their state inspection results? Are their any liens, or citations?

Observe how the staff treats the residents and how they talk to them--with respect or not, or like they are children. Notice if the residents are cleanly dressed, hair combed.

Visit the kitchen, observe cleanliness, eat a meal or two, evaluate the monthly menu for variety and nutrition, what/when snacks available, can family bring food in.

Talk with the Activity Director to evaluate what is offered: Exercise, singing, cooking, dancing, bingo, games, crafts, movies, current events, parties, field trips, etc.

Drop in unannounced often and at odd hours, and even during the middle of the night to observe the level of care and attentiveness.

According to NMI’s Health & Wellness Trends Database™, 2006 will see the continued propagation of specific nutrient platform drivers across food/beverages and nutritional supplements. The desire for specificity is evident as 57% of all U. S. consumers indicate they are looking for foods that have a specific health claim and about half prefer to buy vitamins/minerals/herbals/dietary supplements that have a specific health claim. Use of functional foods and condition-specific supplements are also on the rise, showing 5-year compound annual growth rates of 17% and 16% respectively.

“This desire for health claims is evident across many consumer packaged goods. For example, with over 29 million people (adults and children) suffering from food allergies, allergen-free foods will continue to experience solid growth. Introductions of gluten-free foods alone have shown a 50% compound annual growth over the past six years and generate U. S. retail sales in excess of $400 million. Another nutrient to watch in 2006 is probiotics, which has shown annual awareness increases of 27% since 2002,” according to NMI President Maryellen Molyneaux.

Manufacturers are integrating specific nutrients into foods and supplements related to certain health conditions such as heart disease and digestive health. These nutrients include fish oil, omega 3, lutein, lycopene, probiotics plant sterols, among others. “While consumers may lack understanding of the specific health benefits of some nutrients, savvy manufacturers and marketers will use this opportunity for continued education to raise the value of their nutrient-rich products in the eyes of the consumers,” says Molyneaux.
