New Americorps*VISTAs Join Road of Life Staff

New Americorps*VISTAs Join Road of Life Staff

Road of Life gets seven new staffers after Americorps grant is extended.

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) September 29, 2006

Seven new Americorps members have come on board at Road of Life as a result of the extension of Road of Life’s Americorps*VISTA (Volunteer In Service To America) grant. The extension of this grant has allowed the organization to double its staff.

Americorps, a group of local, state, and national service programs, brings together more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet our country’s vital needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment.

AmeriCorps members work with more than 2,000 nonprofits, public agencies, and faith-based and community organizations. Since 1994, more than 400,000 men and women have given needed assistance to millions of Americans across the nation through their AmeriCorps service. With the help of grants and the commitment of members, Americorps supports communities by organizing community resources.

The extension of Road of Life’s grant is an indication of the organization’s excellent rapport with The Corporation for National Community Service, a federal agency since 1993, and of the members’ satisfaction with their year of service at Road of Life.

In the coming year, Road of Life’s new staff members look forward to working to enhance the quality of the organization’s cancer prevention program and to raise awareness of the importance of health education and the organization within the community.

POS Supply Solutions Addresses the Safety Concerns of BPA in Thermal Receipt Paper Rolls

POS Supply Solutions Addresses the Safety Concerns of BPA in Thermal Receipt Paper Rolls

POS Supply Solutions carries BPA Free Thermal Receipt Paper as Part of its Thermal Paper Roll Offering

Danvers, MA (Vocus/PRWEB) December 15, 2010

POS Supply Solutions, Inc. (POS Supply) has introduced a line of Bisphenol A (BPA) FREE Thermal Paper Rolls as part of its Thermal Paper Roll offering.

To address the growing concern among customers and the end users of thermal papers over the potential human health effect of exposure to BPA in a wide variety of products, POS Supply is now offering a line of BPA Free thermal receipt paper rolls.

BPA is a mass-produced industrial chemical used primarily to make polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. In Jan 2010, the US FDA announced that recent studies provide reason for concern about the potential adverse health effects of BPA in infants and children, especially for applications with direct food. Scientists have recently shown that BPA is detectable in food and on some cash register receipts. An independent report by The Environmental Working Group has also found BPA on cash register receipts.

Some of the papers that are outsourced by POS Supply Solutions to fulfill customer requirements and used for retail receipts, gas pump receipts, ATM applications, and other point of sale transaction receipts may contain BPA depending on the source of the paper stock.

"We are working closely with our vendors from whom we purchase thermal grades containing BPA to assist them in finding alternatives to BPA if the scientific or legislative community recommends or requires such changes,” said POS Supply’s president Stephen Enfield. "We are committed to responding to our customer’s requests for BPA Free products."

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) summarizes the results of NTP’s study on the possible effects of BPAand provides an excellent source of unbiased information.

POS Supply is committed to offering safe products for their customers. You can order BPA Free Thermal Paper rolls from POS Supply Solutions with total confidence that you are receiving premium quality products at a great price.

Banned Plastic Shopping Bags Turned Into Eco-Hip Handbags by Conserve

Banned Plastic Shopping Bags Turned Into Eco-Hip Handbags by Conserve

In addition to supporting Conserve's environmental work, 100 percent of the profits from handbag sales by Just Nature Skin Care through December 31, 2007 will benefit the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS). TAPS serves as a compassionate resource for U. S. Military families coping with the grief of losing a loved one through active duty.

Des Moines, Iowa (PRWEB) November 21, 2007

San Francisco became the first U. S. city to ban plastic shopping bags, but a nonprofit organization called Conserve has discovered a way to recycle those banned bags to create fashionable eco-hip handbags. And online retailer Just Nature Skin Care is bringing those European-style handbags to the U. S. market this holiday season to support the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS).

Conserve employs hundreds of underprivileged women in Delhi to collect up to 6,000 discarded plastic shopping bags each day and deliver them back to the production facility. The bags are sanitized, sorted by color, and then arranged in beautiful patterns on a blank canvas. The canvas is fed into a heating unit where the plastic is fused together forming a single, colorful sheet of Handmade Recycled Plastic (HRP).

Fashion designers from London and Paris have created handbag patterns (templates) for the women to cut from the HRP sheets and then sew into stylish, European-style handbags. Conserve supports over 300 impoverished families via this fair trade model. To view the various bag styles and colors, visit www. JustNatureSkinCare. com and click on Planet Charity

More than 50 recycled bags are used to make each handbag. The purses are hand-sewn and created from Handmade Recycled Plastic, so no two bags are exactly alike. Only 100 handbags per day are produced.

Online retailer Just Nature Skin Care has teamed up with Conserve to offer the 'eco-hip' handbags as part of a "Green Holiday Season Charity" event. The partnership builds on Just Nature Skin Care's commitment to nature and giving back to the community.

"We saw the eco-friendly handbags as a positive reminder of how each of us can make a difference when it comes to the environment," says Barbara Miller, Marketing Manager with Just Nature Skin Care. "And when it comes to making a difference, the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors rises to the top. TAPS is a remarkable organization and the assistance it provides to military families has never been more important."

Conserve Handbags are available through the Just Nature Skin Care web site under Planet Charity.

The black Seminoles were of African origin and assimilated with many North American indigenous groups from the Florida region. Together they formed the Seminole confederation. In 1850, running away from the territorial politics of slavery and racial discrimination in the United States, the mascogos (black Seminoles) sought asylum in Mexico, where after serving as border troops in the north of the country, they were given lands and the Mexican nationality. La Raíz Olvidada (The Forgotten Root) (2001), produced by Rafael Rebollar Corona, examines the harbor of Veracruz, and the harbors of Pánuco and Campeche, the main channels through which African slaves were introduced to Mexico. On the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, African descendents developed settlements in this region. In an effort to replace indigenous labor, the Spanish took most of the black population to Costa Chica, one of the regions least known by Mexicans. Those escaping slavery found a fitting place on the coast to keep their freedom. This led to cultural mingling between Western Hemisphere Indians, Africans and Europeans, producing an entire coastal culture on the Pacific Shore. August 14th - Cuban Legends

Guests: Filmmaker Lorenzo Destefano

Film: Los Zafiros (The Sapphires): Music From The Edge of Time (2007), produced by Lorenzo Destefano, with executive producers Randa Haines and Sandra Levinson, explores the memories of Manuel Galban and Miguel Cancio, the two surviving members of Los Zafiros, as they are reunited in Havana, Cuba. Los Zafiros are a musical phenomenon molded by their time and place that caused a sensation in Havana and beyond throughout the 1960's and into the early '70's. Though they enjoyed international acclaim, touring widely throughout Europe, Los Zafiros have remained in relative obscurity throughout the U. S. as a result of the political climate of the cold war.

The sensuality of their musical and personal style brought them a rabid female following and heavy air play on national radio, making them very much the Beatles. Four decades after their formation, Los Zafiros popularity, sparked by the successful 1998 release of the Spanish-language feature film "Zafiros - Locura Azul," and of the "Bossa Cubana" CD from World Circuit Records ("Buena Vista Social Club"). On a popular battle-of-the-bands style radio program hosted by Adrian Mesa of 92.3 Classica-FM in Miami in December 2001, Los Zafiros receive a majority of the call-in votes compared to their competition. For more, visit http://www. loszafirosfilm. com (http://www. loszafirosfilm. com).

September 4th - Urban and Demographic Change

Guests: Filmmakers Virginie-Alvine Perrette and Lyn Goldfarb

Film: Twilight Becomes Night (2008), produced by Virginie-Alvine Perrette, explores the pivotal role of neighborhood stores in our lives and our communities. Using the streets and shops of New York City as a backdrop, the film moves beyond nostalgic regret to reveal a high-stakes transformation and its potential affect on us all and illustrates how this is a reality we may be facing each time a neighborhood shop closes its door for good due to changing economics in the new era of large and impersonal retail chains. For more, visit http://www. twilightbecomesnight. com (http://www. twilightbecomesnight. com).

The New Los Angeles (2007), produced by Lyn Goldfarb and narrated by Oscar-Winner Linda Hunt, explores the complexities of inclusion in Los Angeles, the nation's largest "majority-minority" city and the city with the nation's largest divide between rich and poor. The film provides a portrait of a transition beginning in 1973 with the election of Mayor Tom Bradley, the first African-American mayor of a major city without a black majority, and concludes with the political empowerment of Latinos and the election of Antonio Villaraigosa, Los Angeles's first Latino mayor in more than 130 years. The film takes on such issues as immigration, globalization, de-industrialization, economic inequality, and a shrinking middle class. Don’t Use My Sweater Like A Towel -- Chronicles of a Modern Day Dating Diva

Don’t Use My Sweater Like A Towel -- Chronicles of a Modern Day Dating Diva

Unlike so many relationship books out there, Don’t Use My Sweater Like a Towel is candid, frank, and brutally honest. Sexual barriers are broken down, and the anecdotes will have you in stitches -- and through the eyes and words of Jennifer Kelton some of you may even recognize little bits of yourself.

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) August 11, 2006

Jennifer Kelton is a modern day chameleon. Spurred on by a break-up from a long-time boyfriend and a sticky dating mishap, this self-professed surf/skate eco-designer and music industry whiz turned author has now penned an uncensored, viciously hilarious account of her dating hits and misses.

Kelton takes on the oh-so-slightly controversial and much-discussed topic of dating and puts it to the test: with personal anecdotes, surveys, interviews, experiments, and sexual humor. No romantic stone is left unturned when the author is through.

Whether it’s ordering pheromones over the internet or having your date destroy a designer sweater after a little bump and grind, this book sets out to inspire conversation and healthy good-natured debates between the battling sexes. Don’t Use My Sweater Like a Towel is not meant to create rules, but to show by example there are none when it comes to the dating and mating game.

The book is available at greenknightspress. com, target. com, barnesandnoble. com, borders. com and amazon. com.

Enter Medicare disease management programs and the positive impact they can have on patients’ health status and spending.

Medicare Disease Management: Identifying and Engaging the Elderly Population To Improve Chronic Health Status, a March 29, 2006 audio conference sponsored by the Healthcare Intelligence Network (HIN), will de-mystify the steps to launching a results-oriented Medicare disease management program, from design to patient recruitment to outcomes assessment.

During HIN’s 90-minute live interactive audio conference, Blake Andersen, president, Chronic Care Group, Health Sciences Institute, Dr. Randall Krakauer, national medical director, retiree markets, Aetna, and Christobel Selecky, CEO, LifeMasters Inc., will share strategies from their organizations’ own disease management programs targeting Medicare beneficiaries with chronic conditions. During this 90-minute audio conference, presenters will also provide details on:

Identifying, assessing and stratifying at-risk Medicare beneficiaries; Serving dual eligibles; Engaging the elderly population and family members in the care management process; Lessons learned from serving the Medicare population; Measuring outcomes and results in Medicare disease management programs; and What care management models are effective in treating the Medicare population.

“Beneficiaries with multiple chronic conditions have difficulty caring for themselves and commonly experience poor health outcomes, increased healthcare costs and diminished quality of life,” says Melanie Matthews, HIN executive vice president and chief operating officer. “There is evidence that providing self-care support, education and care coordination for this population can improve clinical outcomes, reduce healthcare outlay and boost participant and provider satisfaction.”

According to Matthews, the March 29, 2006 audio conference will provide tactical direction to CEOs, medical directors, disease management directors, managers and coordinators, health plan executives, care management nurses, business development executives and strategic planning directors hoping to launch similar initiatives. The 90-minute audio conference format builds in 30 minutes dedicated to responding to participants’ questions.

For those who miss the live conference, an on-demand rebroadcast can be accessed beginning March 31, 2006, and a CD-ROM recording with printed transcript will be available in mid-April. Global Sensors Market to Reach US$74.2 Billion by 2015, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc

Global Sensors Market to Reach US$74.2 Billion by 2015, According to New Report by Global Industry Analysts, Inc.

GIA announces the release of a comprehensive global report on Sensors market. Global sensors market is projected to reach US$74.2 billion by 2015. Industrialization and trade liberalization induced highly efficient bulk manufacturing activities, global distribution and growing levels of automation of operations, which have been longstanding growth drivers in the market will continue to push gains across major end-use industries, in the post recession period.

San Jose, CA (Vocus) October 13, 2010

Sensors are primary elements for most technology products built today. Sensors’ application areas span simple switches and temperature sensing devices as a part of the most basic of home appliances to sophisticated sensors in advanced manufacturing equipment and factory automation systems. The advent of micro-technology has revolutionized the electronics industry so much so that miniaturization has now become a cue word across the globe. Simultaneously, industrial requirements have also been healthy and promising, indicating a positive inducement for sensors. Automotive safety markets reacted swiftly creating demand for accelerometers, while Hall-effect sensors also made it into the automotive systems. On an equal footing, the environment protection regulations and safety equipment industry’s support is also crucial, which creates additional demand for sensors used in gas detection equipment.

As sensors embody the core of all electronics, industrial, and consumer products, the volatility of the end-use industries has a direct bearing on the sensor market. The year 2009 was a challenging year for electronics, process & manufacturing industries, HVAC & building control, automotive industry and correspondingly for sensors. The sharp downturn in the global economy, uncertainty over the development of end-markets, inventory levels, and pricing pressures, significantly affected the overall business environment. Weakening momentum in most industrialized economies, and the volatility of the end-user industry, and tight credit conditions temporarily dislodged growth in global sensors market.

As stated by the new market research report on Sensors, Europe and the US, together account for a major share of the global sensors market. Although North America is the largest market for sensors, market growth is expected to emanate from developing countries in Asia-Pacific, in the next few years. Technological refinements in terms of improved efficiency and performance will re-emerge to drive growth in the marketplace. Segment wise, Chemical sensors market represents the largest market for sensors. Chemical sensors industry witnessed moderate slowdown in the year 2009 as decline in use by end-use markets such as automotive and biometric verticals were to a large extent counterbalanced by the indispensable use of chemical sensors in medical diagnostic, process monitoring and control, and HVAC control applications.

Global image sensors market, which witnessed a severe demand decline in 2009, is expected to bounce back with a vengeance in 2010, given the improving sales of camera phones, digital cameras and machine-vision systems. Automotive sector, the largest end use market for sensors, experienced a decline in 2009 following recession-reduced demand for vehicles across the globe. Improvements in safety features of vehicles, fuel economy and emissions will encourage market growth during the 2011 through 2015 period. Mandates are expected to continue being the market drivers, given that electronic stability control (ESC) systems are scheduled to become mandatory requirements for vehicles in the US by 2012, and in the Europe by 2014.

Leading players in the global market include Analog Devices, Allegro MicroSystems Inc, Atmel Corporation, Bosch Sensortec, Bourn Inc., City Technology, Continental Automotive Systems, Corrsys-Datron, CTS Automotive, Dalsa, Denso Corporation, Eaton Corp, ELMOS Semiconductor, Honeywell, GE Security, Goodrich Corporation, Melexis Microelectronic Integrated Systems, OmniVision Technologies, Rockwell Collins, Siemens, Sensata Technologies, STMicroelectronics, TRW Automotive Holdings Inc, TT Electronics, among others.

The research report titled "Sensors: A Global Strategic Business Report" announced by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. provides a comprehensive review of industry overview, end-use sectors, market trends and issues, growth drivers, product profile, players, competition, mergers, acquisitions, and other strategic industry activities. Analysis is presented for major geographic markets such as United States, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, the UK, Italy, Asia (China, Korea, Rest of Asia-Pacific), Latin America (Brazil, Rest of Latin America) and Rest of World. Key segments analyzed include Pressure Sensors, Chemical Sensors, Flow Sensors, Level Sensors, Temperature Sensors, Proximity & Displacement Sensors, Force and Load Sensors, Position Sensors, Image Sensors and Fiber Optic Sensors. End-use segments analyzed include Automobile Applications, Process & Manufacturing Industries, Machine Tools & General Machinery, HVAC & Building Control, and Office Automation & Communication.

AllMed Launches First-Level Physician Review Workflow Software: MedCert

AllMed Launches First-Level Physician Review Workflow Software: MedCert

MedCert extends PeerPoint® medical review portal platform, enabling first level physician review outsourcing for medical management companies and health plans.

Portland, OR (PRWEB) June 17, 2010

AllMed Healthcare Management, a leading Independent Review Organization (IRO), has released MedCert, a new medical pre-authorization service and software system allowing utilization review and case management organizations to augment their internal medical staff capabilities and achieve cost savings through outsourcing first-level physician reviews. MedCert is deployed in AllMed’s popular web-based medical review workflow platform: PeerPoint®.

MedCert was developed to help healthcare payer organizations meet their ongoing cost reduction goals through first-level physician review outsourcing. The MedCert platform allows utilization review and case management units to draw on remotely-based physician reviewers and Medical Directors to review and make first-level approvals and denials.

“MedCert represents AllMed’s continued investment in medical review technologies and services that help payer organizations to reduce costs and improve their turnaround times,” said Andrew Rowe, AllMed’s CEO. “Healthcare organizations are increasingly looking to outsource their medical reviews to either free up their Medical Directors for higher valued-added work, or to move physician reviews from fixed to variable costs. The MedCert solution plays perfectly into this trend.”

All MedCert reviews are handled by AllMed’s staff of Medical Directors and online physicians, who are all board-certified in emergency medicine, family practice and/or internal medicine. Case requests and medical review questions are routed through the PeerPoint®, AllMed’s web-based medical review portal software. The work product is a short determination statement and rationale that can be copied or electronically routed into a payer’s medical management software. Case-related communications are efficiently managed through MedCert’s threaded discussion capability, or via AllMed’s MedConsult Hotline, which is staffed by AllMed’s Medical Directors.

Michael Jackson's Former Longtime Public Relations Agent Reveals Inside Story in Forthcoming Book

Michael Jackson's Former Longtime Public Relations Agent Reveals Inside Story in Forthcoming Book

Michael Jackson's longtime PR agent, Bob Jones, reveals true, insider account of the King of Pop in new book, Michael Jackson: The Man Behind the Mask

Nashville, TN (PRWEB) August 26, 2005

Michael Jackson: The Man Behind the Mask provides the inside story behind the rumors, accusations, ugliness and mystery surrounding Michael Jackson. A true insider’s account, Michael Jackson: The Man Behind the Mask (SelectBooks, $21.95) is the story from Jackson’s own former public relations agent — a man who has been by Michael’s side for the last 34 years.

Because of his unique position at Jackson’s right hand, author Bob Jones is the one person in the world who can legitimately offer such a naked inside view of the world the King of Pop has created for himself. The drastic changes in his appearance, his bizarre Neverland ranch, his relationships with a series of young boys — from poor kids with serious health problems to famous child actors — all of it is laid bare and discussed in detail by one of the only people besides Jackson who was there for it all.

Michael Jackson: The Man Behind the Mask by Bob Jones with Stacy Brown is generating a buzz from every quarter imaginable as an authoritative source of unvarnished truth. And Bob Jones has the credentials to back it all up. As former head of PR for not only Jackson, but also the family musical act The Jackson 5 in the years before Michael’s solo career, Jones was not just an insider, but a confidant of the family—and the only one to have never signed a confidentiality agreement.

Bob Jones was Michael Jackson’s public relations chief for 34 years, as well as Executive Vice President of Jackson’s entertainment company. Having worked with Michael both as a solo artist and as a member of the Jackson 5, Bob Jones has been the most visible and well-known representative for Michael throughout his career. He was also instrumental in creating Jackson’s contemporary persona, and was the first to dub Jackson the “King of Pop” in the early 90’s. Because of their long-standing relationship, Bob Jones is in the unique position of being able to offer an honest and comprehensive look behind the scenes and into the truth of what goes on at the Neverland ranch.

Currently an analyst/consultant for MSNBC, Stacy Brown is the co-author of the book, Blind Faith: The Miraculous Journey of Lula Hardaway and her son, Stevie Wonder. A longtime friend and confidante of the Jackson family, he now lives in New York with his family.

SelectBooks is an independent book publisher based in New York.

Study Shows Plastic Surgery Patients Heal Faster With Nutritional Supplements!

In Alice in Wonderland, one pill made Alice larger while another pill made her small. Today, Alice could take one herbal supplement pill after having plastic surgery and recuperate faster than without it, according to a study published in the July issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). In fact, the study found patients healed 17% faster by taking a special mixture of bromelain, vitamin C, rutin and grape seed extract.

“I am sure some plastic surgeons were completely surprised that this combination of supplements actually reduced the recovery time for patients,” says Dr. Sam Speron, plastic surgery expert and consumer advocate. All of the herbal supplements included in the mixture are antioxidants, which enhance cellular stability and decrease swelling. As plastic surgeons, our goal is always to promote safety first and be the voice of reason. Based on these findings, plastic surgeons can provide an even greater proactive approach to caring for patients and ensuring a greater degree of success to help their wounds heal. Patients still need to be extremely careful when considering taking any supplements, however. Doctors still need to do more research and do not yet know which ingredient is the active ingredient or if they rely on each other to be effective. Also, while all of the herbal mixture’s ingredients are generally recognized as safe by the FDA, patients should never take large amounts of any supplement. In addition, some supplements have been shown to be dangerous to surgical patients and cause more bleeding and complications, such as Ginko and St John’s Wort. Fish oil and aspirin are other two common medications many patients take without realizing they can cause excess bleeding, extend healing time and create additional complications.”

Sam can outline to your audience the reasons why you may want to take some vitamins and herbal supplements with your cosmetic surgery but be careful:

-All oral herbal supplements are not the same because there is a lack of standardization of the active ingredients because they are not FDA regulated. Although people can buy these products at nutrition stores, there are differences between brands and even individual bottles from the same company.

-Due to these inconsistencies and potential hazards, patients should communicate to their plastic surgeons what current medications and herbal supplements they are taking, as well as other health problems. In addition, patients should never rely on unscientific anecdotal claims to decide which supplements they want to take. Only supplements that have been scientifically shown to work and are recommended by your plastic surgeon should be taken.

-This study is a bridge towards discovering if any of these individual supplements have merit separately or combined together.

-Only through further study can we discover how these antioxidants work to shorten recovery time for patients. Until more information is known, patients should always work with their plastic surgeons to determine if and what kind of supplements are right for them.

-Many qualified and reputable plastic surgeons currently use Arnica for their cosmetic surgery patients to decrease bruising and swelling. This can make the recovery process easier and more enjoyable.

Sam Speron is widely recognized as a leading expert on plastic surgery. Dr. Speron’s educational efforts have received critical acclaim from the media from around the country including national TV (MD TV), local TV (multiple CBS Channel 2 10PM special reports, multiple appearances on “This week with Dr. Breen”), national radio (“The Paul Harvey show” on WGN radio), local radio (“The Joe Gentile Show” on WJJG on AM-1530), newspapers (Chicago Tribune, Crain’s Chicago Business, Daily Herald) and magazines (Complete Woman, Chicago Magazine, Living Life, Medical Economics, The Lutheran).

Leading Scientific Experts to Convene in Washington, D. C. as Cases of Type 1 Diabetes Rise

Leading Scientific Experts to Convene in Washington, D. C. as Cases of Type 1 Diabetes Rise

Parents and Clinicians to Learn About the Challenges and Opportunities of Raising a Child With Type 1 Diabetes at Free Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Summit

Washington, DC (PRWEB) January 24, 2011

On Saturday, January 29th, hundreds of parents and clinicians from up and down the East Cost will have the opportunity to hear first-hand from some of the country’s most prominent researchers about the latest developments in the prevention, management and cure of type 1 diabetes. The Type 1 Research Summit is sponsored by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Capitol Chapter and will be held 10 a. m. – 3 p. m. at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Maryland. Registration is required.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. There is no known way to prevent type 1 diabetes and no cure. People with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump - each day, every day of their lives. Even with this intensive care regimen, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent devastating complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.

Diabetes of all types continues to grow at an alarming rate - in the last 30 years, the number of people with diabetes has skyrocketed to about 24 million people in the United States alone, including as many as three million Americans affected by type 1 diabetes. The cost of diabetes is staggering - one out of every five health care dollars is spent caring for someone with diagnosed diabetes, and one out of every three Medicare dollars is attributed to diabetes. The national price tag for diabetes is at an astounding $174 billion per year and that cost is estimated to almost triple in the next 25 years.

Even with treatments available today, tight blood sugar control remains a challenge and daily struggle for those living with type 1 diabetes. The majority of people living with the disease are not achieving recommended target levels.

“The JDRF Research Summit offers access to information from leading experts in diabetes prevention, treatment and awareness. Each brings a unique perspective, from physicians to scientists and congressional staffers, to medical journalists,” said Diana DeGette (D-CO), Co-Chair of the Congressional Diabetes Caucus.

One of the highlights of the Summit will be the latest news on the development of an artificial pancreas. JDRF launched the Artificial Pancreas Project in 2005 to speed the development of automated diabetes management systems. A self-regulating system, the artificial pancreas would be able to sense sugar levels continuously and automatically release the right amount of insulin at the right times - eliminating the need for multiple blood tests, insulin injections and therefore lifting the daily burden associated with managing diabetes.

"An artificial pancreas, essentially a device that would both measure blood sugar and dispense appropriate amounts of insulin to keep levels in optimal range, would take much of the guesswork out of daily management of the disease," said Dr. Aaron Kowalski, Assistant Vice President of Treatment Therapies at JDRF who will be speaking at the Summit. "In the long-run, controlled blood sugar levels will help to lessen or avert the devastating complications from type 1 diabetes."

Other speakers include Dan Hurley, author of Diabetes Rising; Henry Rodriguez, M. D.(University of South Florida Diabetes Center), who will speak about the challenges and opportunities of raising a child with type 1; Mark Atkinson, PhD, from the Network of Pancreatic Organ Donors with Diabetes (nPOD) and Director of the Diabetes Center of Excellence at the University of Florida; Ed Damiano, PhD, of Boston University, where one of the artificial pancreas trials is taking place; Jerry Palmer, M. D. (University of Washington) who will talk about the DiaPreventGAD study which is looking at whether the Diamyd vaccine can preserve insulin function; and Bill Parsons, Legislative Director to Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD).

Special thanks to Diamyd for their support as a Vision Sponsor of the 2011 JDRF Summit. For more information about the Summit, visit jdrfcapitol. org/summit or call 202-371-0044.

Technical Designs Oversees the “Greening” of New Hampton Hotel

Technical Designs Oversees the “Greening” of New Hampton Hotel

National Consulting Firm Provides Green Engineering Expertise In Building Innovative, Sustainable & Environmentally Friendly Hotel

Folsom, CA (PRWEB) October 13, 2010

Technical Designs, a leading national consulting firm specializing in green engineering, today announced the successful completion of Hampton Hotel’s first LEED® certified hotel in California.

The Hampton Inn and Suites in Folsom represents a prime example of how businesses can construct cost-effective buildings with less environmental impact and lower operating cost., said officials with Technical Designs, the company responsible for helping incorporate a wide range of sustainable design strategies to achieve LEED certification – the gold standard recognized by the U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

“We like working with clients like American Hospitality Services Inc. -- the Hampton franchisee in Folsom -- who really 'get it',” said Mark Hauenstein, president of Technical Designs. “We start with the idea that sustainability is the goal and then focus on overhauling basic construction practices. The result is improved living spaces with less environmental impact and lower energy cost. Hampton's dedication to green building is truly commendable and should be a model for the rest of the American hotel industry.”

Technical Designs’ work included oversight of such LEED categories as sustainable site design, reduced water use, optimized building energy performance, sustainable building products, construction recycle management and improved indoor air quality.

Achieving LEED certification, granted earlier this summer, was based on a variety of design and construction elements. These included:
Advanced mechanical system design, selected for its high efficiency, quiet operation and central control / alarm features;  Water saving fixtures that will reduce water usage by a third;  Zero CFC based refrigerants in the air conditioning system;  The hotel’s efficient insulation system, glazing, roof, hot water production, air conditioning, heating and lighting equipment allows it to reduce its annual energy usage by at least 24 percent compared to a similar hotel built under standard building codes;  The hotel purchased 572,000 Kilowatt-hours worth of Tradable Renewable Energy Certificate. This amounts to 70 percent of the building energy usage over a two-year period. The goal is to reduce the carbon footprint of the hotel with the purchase of wind powered energy certificates;  Low emitting (VOC) materials (glues, sealants, woods) were used during the construction;  Landscaping utilizes native plants, reducing the need for watering;  The hotel is conveniently located near a public transportation hub and provides a shuttle so guests can avoid use of cars;  The hotel provides extensive bicycle parking and a shower facility to encourage hotel employees to ride their bicycle to work;  The hotel offers preferred parking places for fuel efficient and high occupancy vehicles.

Hampton officials applauded the work of Technical Designs.

“Technical Designs was instrumental in creating a state-of-the-art facility with a higher level of performance,” said Rohit Ranchhod, owner and developer with American Hospitality. “Sustainability is a driving force for the brand and for Hilton Worldwide. By partnering with skilled firms like Technical Designs, our franchise is able to stay in the forefront of our industry as a leader in sustainable building and operations.”

About Technical Designs
Headquartered in Reno, Nevada, Technical Designs is a national consulting firm that provides green engineering expertise and related services throughout the United States to a wide range of businesses, non-profits and public-sector organizations.
