NY Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Department of Health (DOH) Report No Health Concerns at Synthetic Turf Fields

FieldTurf, leader in synthetic sports fields, is pleased at the results of a new study released on Friday by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Department of Health (DOH) which concludes that crumb rubber material used in synthetic turf fields poses no significant environmental threat to air or water quality and poses no significant health concerns. Add this to the long list of definitive scientific reports proving the safety of artificial turf.

The study assessed the potential release of chemicals in crumb rubber to the environment. Crumb rubber, produced by grinding scrap tires, is a common "infill" material for synthetic turf fields. It is a key component towards ensuring proper cushioning and energy restitution required to generate ideal performance and ensure the high levels of safety that these new generation synthetic turf fields have become known for.

The study made the following major conclusions:
There is no significant threat from chemicals leaching into surface water and groundwater. While some chemicals can be released from crumb rubber over time, they are in small concentrations and are reduced by absorption, degradation and dilution -- resulting in no significant impact on groundwater or surface water. Lead concentrations in crumb rubber are well below federal hazard standards for lead in soil and do not represent a significant source of lead exposure. Levels of chemicals in the air at synthetic turf fields do not raise a significant health concern.

To carry out the study, New York state scientists conducted lab tests on crumb rubber samples obtained from manufacturers and conducted tests at synthetic fields. They tested for leaching, exposure to acid rain and acid digestion, exposed samples to a range of temperatures to observe impacts, assessed chemical particle sizes for their potential to move through soil and air, collected soil samples at wells down-gradient from existing synthetic turf fields and measured air samples upwind and downwind of such fields.

Led by DEC's Division of Solid and Hazardous Materials and the Division of Air Resources, the state pursued a comprehensive evaluation of potential chemical releases from crumb rubber. It involved an interdisciplinary approach, drawing upon expertise in DEC's and DOH's other programs including water resources, remediation, laboratory, chemistry and fish and wildlife.

The studies continue to roll in and the results remain the same. The DEC and DOH have reiterated the safety of artificial turf - something that hundreds of organizations worldwide have proven through scientific analysis and testing for many years.

Australians are not being affected as badly with the GFC as US & UK citizens, though thousands of Aussies have been on the wrong side of Lines of Credit and have lost their homes.

Firstly, What is a Line of Credit?
A line of credit may allow the borrower access to the equity within the home to borrow for other reasons at home loan rates. The equity is simply the difference between what what the home is worth and what is owed on it.

Hopefully, the value of the home will increase over the years, so that even if it hasn't been paid off, a significant amount of the loan has been repaid and the equity and real worth of the home has increased.

While lines of credit may be an effective way of consolidating debts at low interest rates, they may also lead into paying little off the principal of the loan or even going backwards. This is especially so in the midst of the Global Financial Crisis.

Remember, every time a borrower accesses their line of credit for a new car, holiday etc, they are wearing down the equity in their own homes.

Some Reasons why a Line of Credit May Be Revoked

1. Untruthful Applications
If the borrower didn't fully disclose all relevant financial details to the lender that would affect their decision to lend you the money, they can certainly take away the facility.

Often people inflate the value of the property or their ability to repay the loan via personal financial circumstances. If these misrepresentations are revealed, the line of credit may be revoked immediately.

2. Exceeded Credit Limits
It seems the temptation of having easy access to loads of cash is too much for many borrowers. Some people simply can't control their spending and will need to have their repayments altered so that they are easy to meet, or in some unfortunate situations, the line of credit may be withdrawn altogether.

3. Circumstances Dramatically Change
Nearly all loan documents insist that the lender is informed when the financial situation affects the ability to repay the loan. In extreme cases, this may relate to bankruptcy, imprisonment or death of the main provider. If the home owner doesn't inform them promptly of these circumstances, they (the lender) can commence cancellation of the loan.

Common Terms & Conditions
A common clause in many loan documents reads something like:

"We may refuse to provide further credit at any time without prior notice to you. We may also reduce or cancel the credit limit at any time without notice to you. If we cancel the credit limit we may ask to pay the money owing in full immediately."

What to do if a Line of Credit is Cancelled
In the unlikely event that a lender revokes a line of credit, there are 3 options depending on why the loan was revoked.

1. Convert the line of credit to a standard into a standard loan.
This is the best option if the home owner can meet the loan criteria, especially if the lender is persuaded to waive establishment fees and termination costs.

2. Refinance with another Lender.
This option may be difficult if not impossible dependant again on the situation. On the other hand, the financial market is constantly changing and new products may arise that suit different needs

3. Dispose of the asset used as the security - the home
This is clearly the worst option and the scenario is usually when mortgage refinancing isn't possible because the value of your home dropped significantly and all the equity available through your line of credit is used up before the facility was withdrawn. Then the borrowere would have to look for a lender that will lend more than the home is worth.

As this is extremely unlikely, the home owner would have to have a fire sale of the property to clear most of the debt.

In brief
Knowing the terms and conditions of lines of credit is vitally important, especially when the stakes involve the roofs over heads. Knowing where the home owner stands before entering such an agreement is a must, and any uncertainties must be discussed in full before proceeding. Lines of credit may be a powerful tool in peoples financial health, but like any loan, restraint and discipline should never be abandoned in pursuit of temptation.

The American Society of Health Informatics Managers (ASHIM) collects public opinion on new Health IT Jobs to better survey the growing needs of the healthcare industry, the health information technology profession and interests of the engaged American public.

The American Society of Health Informatics Managers (ASHIM) today published results of it survey on Health IT Jobs. ASHIM conducted this survey in response to data from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, which indicated a national deficit of qualified Health IT (HIT) workers. Its purpose was to provide an early stage snapshot of the jobs activities taking place around HIT in the United States.

“While employers are ramping up to adopt Electronic Health Records (EHR), IT workers are looking to augment their skills to meet those needs and to effectively communicate their qualifications,” said ASHIM Senior Vice President Stephanie L. Jones. “ASHIM believes it is important to understand and support the evolving needs of the health care community and will continue conducting this survey, adjusting questions, to inquire about them.”

Survey results show that the hiring public is most interested in HIT professionals with both health care industry and IT experience. Participants of the survey believe Consultants and IT Application Trainers will fill most new positions; followed closely by new sales and technical IT positions. Responders also believe IT professionals will seek additional skills to work in HIT and that specialized HIT certification by working level IT professionals is valuable in the hiring process.

Healthcare For Women, a national women's rights initiative, has recently launched a new program to help women find and obtain affordable health insurance. Millions of men and women suffer greatly from the healthcare crisis in this country. However, according to Sharon Lerner of TheNation. com, "Women fare particularly badly in terms of health, being more likely than men to leave a prescription unfilled; forgo seeing a needed specialist; and skip a medical test, treatment or follow-up."

She continues, "Financially, women are worse off, too, in large part because they earn less money. Despite the fact that they skimp on their care to cut costs, three in five women are still unable to pay their medical bills."

Although polls show that men and women support health reform in almost equal numbers, it must also be noted that millions of women are single moms raising their children - and are unable to work full-time jobs that may come with health benefits. In addition, many are not receiving adequate child support (if any at all) to help with other family financials (clothing, daycare, food, etc). These two factors alone, put women in a more disadvantaged position then men.

An investigation of online therapy and treatment websites commissioned by Therapeutic Standards and conducted by evaluation specialists Remarkable Performance Ltd. has revealed that only 1 in 5 online therapists are qualified and experienced and has uncovered a catalog of rip-offs and malpractice aimed at some of the most vulnerable people on the internet.

An investigation of online therapy and treatment websites has revealed a catalog of rip-offs and malpractice aimed at some of the most vulnerable people on the internet.

The researchers from the evaluation specialists Remarkable Performance Ltd. investigated 184 websites offering therapy and treatments for a range of anxiety related issues and they found that only 1 in 5 websites were by genuine therapists. Practices include:
 Individuals with no qualifications and little or no experience posing as therapists,  False testimonials,  Trap charges where the customer is funnelled into paying more and more,  Made up recommendations from official bodies,  False review websites promoting their services,  Malicious software  Blog spamming with false positive reviews about their services and  A range of other cheats and tricks

These are just some of the ruses waiting for naive, trusting and often desperate people.

The research produced for the Therapeutic Standards website (http://www. therapeuticstandards. org) has exposed a wide range of misconduct in the online therapy, health and sports treatment sector.

“We were horrified at what we found. These sites are aimed at people who are often desperate for help, which makes them vulnerable to unscrupulous practices.” The reports author, Dr. David Wilkinson said. “The most worrying thing is the fact that anyone can set up a site and call themselves a therapist with no qualifications or experience and lure people into paying for who knows what. We discovered that many people offering online therapy for things like anxiety, or other personal problems online had no qualifications or experience whatsoever.”

David continued “Some of the most convincing and plausible sites we found were the culprits of some of the worst practices. During the research I discovered a service that makes fake video endorsements of any product or service for just $5 a video. I then found these very plausible video testimonials on what initially looked like genuine sites.”

Other practices uncovered by the researchers include claiming association with, or endorsements by legitimate mental health organisations and even government bodies for example. When the researchers checked the claims made on the websites they were rarely genuine. Another increasingly common and worrying trend is to build a fake review site to promote their own services.

It is estimated that approximately 73% of people suffering from problems often consult the internet before a medical practitioner these days. In the days before the web people would have seen their medical practitioner first and then been referred to a qualified therapist. Now most people simply look online. Unfortunately people have no way of knowing if a service offered online is genuine or not unless the claims made on a website are verified by an independent body such as Therapeutic Standards.

“The trouble is anyone with a bit of know-how can set up a very convincing site in a few hours and make it look very credible with false recommendations and reviews. An individual can start practicing online as a counselor, anxiety specialist, marriage guidance counselor or therapist with no qualifications at all and within in hours of setting up a website.

For example, if you look up anxiety treatment in a search engine you get over 22 million web pages all offering help for anxiety related issues. There is no regulation and no borders on the Internet at all and it is often very difficult to tell a genuine therapist or treatment from a fake one based on what is often a set of professional looking web pages. The site could be in Russia, Nigeria or Outer Mongolia and most people wouldn’t know.” Dr. Wilkinson added. “Even health review sites and forums are being faked now.”

Just because a site looks good and appears to have lots of endorsements and associations doesn’t mean it is genuine. The Therapeutic Standards is an international service that has been specifically set up to verify therapy websites and the claims they make.
