Women’s Community Clinic Offers On-Site Mental Health Services to Uninsured Women in San Francisco

Women’s Community Clinic Offers On-Site Mental Health Services to Uninsured Women in San Francisco

San Francisco-based nonprofit expands their services to include mental health counseling services.

San Francisco, CA (Vocus) October 27, 2010

Beginning this month, the San Francisco-based nonprofit Women’s Community Clinic has expanded their services to include mental health care by offering clients integrated behavioral health services. The integrative behavioral health model is an innovative approach that coordinates clinical and behavioral health services to enhance health outcomes, especially for under-served populations.

“There is a clear need for accessible mental health services in San Francisco, especially for women,” said Carlina Hansen, Executive Director of the Women’s Community Clinic. “In the past year, only slightly more than half of San Franciscans who needed mental health care were able to obtain it. Yet almost 1 in 4 women are diagnosed with depression and anxiety—more than twice the rate of men. The addition of on-site mental health services allows the Clinic to better serve our clients and our community.”

The Women’s Community Clinic is initiating this expansion through a partnership with the Wright Institute’s Integrated Health Psychology Training Program (IHPTP), which places a clinical doctoral trainee at the Clinic to deliver these services. The Clinic’s inaugural trainee is Ziska West, who has a background in feminist studies and social justice work.

Clients can be connected to the Clinic’s mental health services for a range of concerns that might arise during a routine women’s health visit, including anxiety, depression, stress, pain management, trauma, and smoking cessation. The comprehensive and effective on-site services provide our clients continuous care at the Clinic and allow our clinicians and mental health providers to remain in close communication and collaborate regarding a client’s care.

About the Women’s Community Clinic: The Women’s Community Clinic is committed to meeting the sexual and reproductive health care needs of Bay Area women and girls. We honor our mission to improve the health and well-being of women and girls by providing sexual and reproductive health services, outreach services, and health training programs. Since 1999, we have served more than 20,000 women and trained more than 500 health worker volunteers. http://www. womenscommunityclinic. org

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is pleased to announce the launch of its national hunger relief initiative supporting summer and before/after school food programs, which took place on Monday, June 21, 2010, at Indianapolis Parks and Recreation’s Douglass Park. U. S. Senator Richard Lugar attended to enjoy breakfast with the day campers and speak about his commitment to securing legislation that supports hunger relief and nutritional education programs for those in need.

Walmart Foundation representatives also attended. The grant is part of Walmart’s recently announced $2 billion commitment to help end hunger in America through its “Fighting Hunger Together” initiative, which includes $250 million pledged to support hunger relief organizations at the national, state and local levels through 2015.

Light Pollution Threatens Your Health, Starry Night Lights Seeks To Protect It

Light Pollution Threatens Your Health, Starry Night Lights Seeks To Protect It

Experts have discovered that light pollution is a threat to public health prompting The American Medical Association (AMA) to vote unanimously to support efforts to control light pollution.

Park City, UT (PRWEB) October 31, 2009

Starry Night Lights is a company dedicated to preserving the night sky in its full glory by giving its customers the most recent, cutting edge, night sky friendly outdoor lighting fixtures. Starry Night Lights is also on the forefront of the international green movement and continuously strives to provide individuals with the most ground breaking news on the environment, light pollution and sustainability. With this aim in mind, Starry Night Lights would like to share with its customers and all other interested individuals recent news on the ways in which light pollution has the ability to negatively affect your health (http://www. starrynightlights. com/lightpollution/light_pollution_and_human_health. html). (1)

Based on recent research, experts have discovered that light pollution (http://www. starrynightlights. com/lpIndex. html) interrupts the human circadian clock which is responsible for regulating behaviors such as sleep, blood pressure, temperature, hunger, hormone production and the like. How this occurs is simple, our bodies are naturally programmed to become sleepy at night, this is recognized by cells in the retina. These cells send signals to the brain informing it of the dark which in turn, causes the body to produce melatonin. Maintaining these natural systems in our body is a must. They are extremely essential for our well being and preserving our health.

Unfortunately when light pollution occurs it disrupts the ability of cells in the retina to signal the brain and trigger melatonin production. This is primarily because the cells become confused by the invading light and cannot recognize the fact that it is actually dark. Ultimately this keeps the body from performing its necessary 'nightly functions'.

With this information in mind, The American Medical Association (AMA) voted unanimously to support efforts to control light pollution. The following comes from their resolution, "Light trespass has been implicated in disruption of the human and animal circadian rhythm, and strongly suspected as an etiology of suppressed melatonin production, depressed immune systems, and increase in cancer rates such as breast cancers."

As a result, it is in ones best interest and in the best interest of others to keep light pollution away from ones home and place of rest. The saying 'there's nothing like a good night's rest' could not be closer to the truth. Sleep, especially in a dark setting is vital for our health for the many reasons already mentioned. Choosing proper outdoor lights (http://www. StarryNightLights. com) for your home or business is a critically important step in addressing the problem.

Join us in the fight to stop light pollution. Let Starry Night Lights be your guide in choosing outdoor lighting (http://www. starrynightlights. com) that does not contribute to light pollution. Our outdoor lights do not shine wastefully up into the night sky or dangerously into neighbor's windows, instead light is directed only to desired locations. Providing improved nighttime visibility and allowing your body to continue on its natural course, uninterrupted by light pollution.

Join the Traveling Therapists of American Traveler – PTs and OTs Gain Compensation in Excess of $100,000 Annually

Not just for traveling nurses, American Traveler offers traveling jobs and benefits to other allied healthcare professionals

Boca Raton, FL (PRWEB) October 10, 2006

American Traveler, one of the largest and fastest-growing travel nurse companies (http://www. americantraveler. com/) in the United States, announced it now offers short-term travel assignments and permanent positions not only to nurses but to physical and occupational therapists as well.

Placing registered nurses in travel nurse jobs (http://www. americantraveler. com/hc_rn_placement. html) has been a prevalent way to compensate for the nation-wide nurse shortage of the past 30 years. Now, the same incentives are available to other allied healthcare professionals, with physical and occupational therapists (http://www. americantraveler. com/hc_rt_placement. html) especially benefiting from American Traveler travel and compensation packages. Physical therapists can earn on average $35-40 per hour, and occupational therapists can earn on average $30-35 per hour. Both receive free housing, free group health, dental and life insurance, bonus opportunities, a 401(k) plan, free weeks between assignments, licensure reimbursement, travel allowances and other incentives. These packages can be worth in excess of $120,000 annually for physical therapists, and $100,000 annually for occupational therapists. Physical and occupational therapists also have the option to begin a traveling job with American Traveler without any prior work experience. Newly graduated therapists can begin work immediately in prestigious hospitals to build their experience and resume at the same time.

“Physical and occupational therapists are at a distinct advantage when they travel with our company,” said American Traveler CEO, Robert L. Bok. “They receive exceptional pay and benefits (http://www. americantraveler. com/hc_rn_benefits. html), travel the country, and work at outpatient centers and top-rated hospitals with some of the best medical practitioners in healthcare. Our expertise in providing outstanding client support and matching skilled OTs and PTs with hospitals known for high-quality patient care is why American Traveler is recognized as the leading supplemental healthcare staffing company in the nation.”

American Traveler staffs over 2,500 hospitals nationwide in metropolitan, suburban and rural areas. Client hospitals include large university teaching facilities in places like Miami, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle, as well as small, quaint hospitals in places like the coastal New England towns, mountain resorts and the Midwest.

Author of Hidden Causes of Heart Attack and Stroke Asks, How Pure Is The Fish Oil You Are Taking For Omega 3?

Author of Hidden Causes of Heart Attack and Stroke Asks, How Pure Is The Fish Oil You Are Taking For Omega 3?

Researcher/author, Christian Wilde cautions: The California Department of Fish & Game includes a warning for the general public on all fishing license applications, advising very limited consumption of certain fish from costal waters because of possible exposure to contamination. We need to ask, how safely has the fish oil product we are taking been refined and purified?

Studio City CA (PRWEB) March 17, 2007

Christian Wilde, researcher and author of prevention books on heart disease, believes the public needs to be more aware. Fish oils are not all the same. The cost of product purification and distillation to remove heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, arsenic, copper and lead as well as PCBs, organo-chlorins and dioxins (PCDD/PCDF) is not an inexpensive process, if done properly. There is growing purity concern between pharmaceutical grade and discount store brands of fish oils. In choosing a fish oil, the health issue is perhaps greater than with any other supplement or vitamin. The adage, "you get what you pay for" may be accurately applied. The Europeans have had a recent awakening to the problem when the product of two of the most prominent providers of fish oil was found to have unacceptable levels of mercury and were duly withdrawn from the marketplace.

Purity and Strength: With the recent surge in public awareness and demand for fish oil product, there is always concern that sub-standard product (as was released in Europe) may find it's way to the consumer. Thankfully, says Wilde, people are reading labels and asking questions. While there are several excellent brands of fish oil available, OMAX 3™ manufactured by Cenestra Health claims 92% purity and provides 1500 mgs of omega 3 per serving. 1125 mgs of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and 275 mgs of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) 3 times more than most fish oil products. To reduce the risk of "food chain contamination," the company claims to harvest smaller fish from the less contaminated northern aquatic waters.

Benefits of Omega 3 are well established for treatment of heart disease in atherosclerosis by increasing HDL cholesterol and fighting fatty buildup within the arteries. Fish oil lowers triglycerides, inhibits arterial spasms and life-threatening arrhythmias that can lead to "sudden death." Sudden death is a phenomenon that claims 250,000 lives yearly and is the highest cause of death in the western world. These statistics, plus the findings of the Physician's Health Study at Brigham and Woman's hospital in Boston MA concerning this phenomenon, support the need for proper amounts of EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). According to the Boston study, episodes of "sudden death" can be reduced by 52% with consumption of fish and or fish oil.

More Heart Benefit: The inflammatory marker CRP, (C-reactive protein) is found to be significantly lower among those who consume fish or fish oil. Appearing in the American College of Cardiology November, 2001 issue, was a study report titled: C-reactive protein, dietary n-3 fatty acids and the extent of coronary artery disease. Subjects who had 50% coronary blockages were found in the study to have elevations of the inflammatory marker CRP in their blood. Reportedly, the study subjects presenting the high percentage of blocked arteries had NOT been taking fish oil and therefore did not benefit from its anti-inflammatory properties. The subjects, who HAD been taking fish oil, according to the study did not develop coronary blockages. The favorable result was attributed to DHA's anti-inflammatory ability in neutralizing high CRP inflammatory levels.

Other diseases: Controlling triglyceride levels among diabetic patients is vital and the benefits of fish oil consumption among type II diabetic patients is established without question The documented list of illnesses proving tangible benefit from omega 3 includes prostate, colon, breast and other types of cancer. Certainly, the vision robbing, macular degenerative disease that strikes people above 50 years of age (1 million sufferers) SLE Lupus, Crones disease, inflammatory arthritis and joint disease of which millions are affected are included in the list as well.

Mental Disease: Statistically, 17 million in this country suffer from some form of mental disease including bipolar disease, schizophrenia, mood imbalance, ADHD (attention deficient hyperactivity disorder), OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) including both areas of postmortem and general clinical depression. Other studies among teenagers, have determined as many as 1 out of 8 youngsters are negatively affected. The benefits from fish oil in the treatment of mental disease either as primary or adjunctive therapy is an exciting area of research with results most promising when fish oil is administered along with traditional pharmaceutical drug therapy. This is not entirely new information, as clinicians and researchers have aware of the benefits for decades. Only now however, has the information been moving forward. Consider that 5 out of 6 double-blind placebo controlled studies examining schizophrenia as well as another 4 of 6 trials concentrating on depression recorded (according to the researchers) an obvious therapeutic benefit from EPA and DHA.

Caloric Increase: Saturated fat in fish oil is not only unhealthy but adds unwanted calories to one's diet which over a year (depending on dosage) can result in weight gain of 15-30 lbs. When fish oil capsules are frozen, saturated fat and other impurities appear white and cloudy as demonstrated in the photograph marked fig 1. In contrast, the OMAX 3™ capsules shown in the photograph at the right appear translucent, clearly free from saturated fats, lard and other unwanted impurities.

Strokes for Folks Therapeutic Massage Joins International Celebration and Raises Cash for Local Community

Strokes for Folks Therapeutic Massage Joins International Celebration and Raises Cash for Local Community

On July 29th and 30th, During Leprechaun Days Mid-Summers Day Faire at RosemountÂ’s Central Park, professional therapists from Strokes for Folks Therapeutic Massage celebrated International Massage Week 2005, by donating all monies collected for chair massage to the local Community Action Council.

Rosemount, Minn. (PRWEB) August 3, 2005

Eleven and one half hours of chair massage was done during the faire.

Strokes for Folks massage therapists Lynette Stauffer, Karen Gillespie and David Stauffer treated backs and necks for 690 minutes, charging attendees half price for their massage. Traditionally $1 a minute, ten minute massages were given for $5.00 each. A total of $345.00 was raised; all of it is going to the Community Action Council.

International Massage Week is a time for therapists to promote the benefits of massage therapy, thousands of therapists around the world donate their time and talent to their communities, usually giving massage for free or having a ‘massage-a-thon’ and the proceeds are given to charity. The massage industry is growing by leaps and bounds as many Americans deem it an important part of personal health care regime.

Chair Massage is a short massage routine done through the clothing in a special ergonomically designed chair. Sessions typically last from five to 20 minutes and focuses on key tension areas of the neck, shoulders, back and arms. The massage is designed to eliminate stress and leave the body feeling relaxed yet energized.

Some massage recipients said that the Strokes for Folks massage tent was the main reason they came to the faire, others thought it a perfect opportunity for their friends or loved ones to try massage in a non-threatening atmosphere. And yet others participated because their money is going to charity. No matter why they came, they went away with a lot more.

They’re getting a great deal according to Lynette Stauffer, owner of Strokes for Folks Therapeutic Massage, LLC, a Center specializing in massage for neck/shoulder pain, injury rehab and prevention, relaxation and rejuvenation. “Their pain is diminished, they have that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you know that you’re helping someone else and they receive their money back in the form of a coupon for $5 off their next massage.”

Massage is said to be one of the most cost-effective ways to relieve stress, improve concentration, increase productivity and lower health costs.

Strokes for Folks Therapeutic Massage, LLC has attended the Rosemount Leprechaun DayÂ’s Mid-SummerÂ’s Day Faire for three years and reports the best participation year to be 2005. After receiving her massage certificate in 2003, Lynette rented the first tent site even before opening the SFF Massage Center June 1st, 2004.

The American Cancer SocietyÂ’s, Relay for Life, has been another recent charitable activity attended by the Strokes for Folks therapists where the relay participants received free massage during their event.

Bush’s FDA Appointee Will Turn Sickly Americans into “Guinea Pigs,” Author Warns

Bush’s FDA Appointee Will Turn Sickly Americans into “Guinea Pigs,” Author Warns

As Senate confirmation hearings proceed on the appointment of Andrew von Eschenbach, M. D., President Bush’s choice for permanent head of the FDA, author and clinician Byron J. Richards is warning that if von Eschenbach passes this small hurdle to sinecure, health care for Americans is headed straight over a cliff.

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) August 24, 2006

As Senate confirmation hearings proceed on the appointment of Andrew von Eschenbach, M. D., President Bush’s choice for permanent head of the FDA, author and clinician Byron J. Richards is warning that if von Eschenbach passes this small hurdle to sinecure, health care for Americans is headed straight over a cliff.

Richards, a board-certified clinical nutritionist and author of the blockbuster book “Fight For Your Health: Exposing the FDA’s Betrayal of America,” points out that the public battle between George Bush and Hillary Clinton over the “morning after pill,” Plan B, is nothing more than a red herring: “Both Hillary and George want von Eschenbach approved; he is an ideal FDA chief for both of their warped healthcare agendas. The ones suffering in this game are Americans and their health. The suffering is not trivial; we are talking about broken lives and dead patients in the hundreds of thousands.”

Serious questions abound regarding the suitability of von Eschenbach to head an agency so intimately connected to the well-being of Americans, Richards warns. While Senator Clinton pushes the issue of women’s rights, nobody is questioning von Eschenbach’s track record, his overt connections to Big Pharma, or his emphasis on using drugs to manage disease, a highly profitable approach to health care for his pharmaceutical friends.

“The bottom line is that under von Eschenbach, the FDA will base effectiveness of drugs on protein signals inside cells evaluated in a lab by a supercomputer. Effectiveness will no longer be based on such obvious outcomes as living longer or improved quality of health, based on controlled studies. By defining safety and effectiveness on gene signal manipulation, the FDA will have a far lower standard for safety and effectiveness, enabling massive numbers of dangerous and toxic drugs to enter the market for human experimentation.”

“It is not too late for Americans to call their Senators and tell them to vote ‘no’ on von Eschenbach. We need an FDA chief who puts safety first,” says Richards. “Americans are being plunged into a high tech Dark Ages of healthcare. The Big Pharma juggernaut is on a rampage. The American population is asleep at the wheel, forfeiting their own health and the health of their children and grandchildren, all the while pretending they are doing something meaningful by having a war over abortion and right to life issues.”

Weekly Venture Capital Activity Week July 11, 2005 through July 17, 2005

This reporting period companies based in California operating in the IT Services industry and that have raised their Series D, E & up round of financing led the pack in the amount of venture financing raised. Also, there was five IPOs this reporting period.

Cryocor raised gross proceeds of $40.8 million on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange and is a San Diego, CA based provider of minimally invasive, disposable catheter systems used for the treatment of cardiac arrythmias.

Www. capitalHunter. com was able to verify that $537 million of venture capital was invested in 34 U. S.-based companies during this weekÂ’s reporting period. The average deal size was approximately 15.79 million. The amount of venture capital invested this period increased by 289% compared to last periods $138 million.

Geographically, California led the way with eleven deals worth $253 million, representing almost half (46%) of this reporting periods funding. However, one company, FiberTower, accounted for more than half of this amount (more on that later). Other companies in California that raised money this reporting period include Posit Science, a provider of neurological health programs that raised $14.52 million in Series B financing, and LGC Wireless, a producer of in-building wireless voice/data coverage and capacity solutions for wireless and Internet use that received $11 million in late stage mezzanine financing. Utah had a good week, raising $57 million and trailed only California in regional funding this reporting period. The rest of the funding was evenly spread out among the usual suspects, including Massachusetts, Virginia, North Carolina, Washington and others.

The IT Services sector raised 30% of the venture capital this reporting period, for a total of $163 million. However, only two companies were part of this funding due to the fact that FiberTower raised an astonishing $150 million, which is the second largest funding this year, topped only by the $200 million Series E funding Vonage raised earlier this year. Software, the perennial leader in venture funding, raised 20% of the funding this reporting period with $107.25, while healthcare related companies (biotechnology, medical devices and health-related facilities) also did very well, raising a total of $139.4 million despite the poor market for biotech public offerings (though CryoCor went public last week, see above)

Late stage financing received the most dollars (again, due to the $150 million raised by FiberTower) with $212 million, but the number of early stage companies receiving financing continued to be strong, as thirteen companies raised a first round of financing and ten more companies raised a second round, meaning that about two-thirds on the reported deals this week were in early or relatively early stage companies. Only five companies accounted for the $212 million late stage capital raised this period, and FiberTower was responsible for most of that. Other notable late financings include Motricity, a Durham, NC based provider of mobile content that raised $30 million, and Vitae Pharmaceuticals, who is currently working with GlaxoSmithKline to develop novel renin inhibitor drug compounds for the treatment of hypertension and related cardiovascular disorders, raised $15 million.

The three largest venture deals this period are as follows:

1 FiberTower IT Services $150 million

2 Omniture Software $40 million

3 Centerre Healthcare Healthcare Services $30 million

The following thirteen and other unnamed investors funded the above mentioned top three venture capital investments for $220 million:

1 Attractor Investment Management

2 BA Venture Partners

3 Baird Venture Partners

4 Crown Castle International

5 Goldman Sachs

6 Hummer Winblad Venture Partners

7 Meritech Capital Partners

8 Oak Investment Partners

9 Pacific Venture Group

10 River Cities Capital Funds

11 RiverVest Venture Partners

12 Sterling Venture Partners

13 Tudor Investments

A total of 87 equity financings of private and public companies occurred during this reporting period. Each of the 87 equity financings are profiled in a weekly report which include venture financings, private placements, secondary offerings, PIPEÂ’s, and IPOÂ’s.
