The Silicon Fen Top 20 Share Price Index has been launched by Silicon Fen Business Report, the online news site that exclusively reports business news about Cambridge's world renowned cluster of high tech companies.

The Index measures the share price movements of the top 20 companies in the region around Cambridge known as Silicon Fen as measured by market capitalization. Silicon Fen is the hottest and largest collection of high-tech companies outside Silicon Valley in California.

Companies in the Top 20 include the cluster giants ARM Holdings and CSR, both now capitalized at well over - its bottom line - as a company's share price usually reflects its performance and potential a billion pounds; ahead of buoyant Autonomy, which is hovering around £850m, and the middle ranking pack headed by Cambridge Antibody and Alizyme. There are several smaller companies, with Prelude Trust squeezing into 20th place with a market capitalization of about £45m.

The total collective value of the Silicon Feb Top 20 companies is over £6.2bn.

Given the volatility of high tech stocks in general and smaller capitalization companies, the editors of Silicon Fen Business Report expect to see the Top 20 Index wobble about from time to time.

There are at least two major approaches to structuring an index of share prices. The two most widely known, the FTSE 100, administered by the Financial Times, and the Dow Jones Industrial Index, administered by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), adopt different approaches.

The FTSE 100 records changes in market capitalisation of the Top 100 companies (as measured by market capitalization), most of which are 'blue chips'. To avoid confusion of which companies constitute the top 100 on any single day, the constituents are fixed each quarter. It is a clear, transparent index.

The Dow Jones Industrial Index by contrast is a group of 30 top US companies that the editors of WSJ believe are representative of American industry. They weight the index in favour of the higher price stocks, such as Microsoft. They change it from time to time, though usually years go by without modification, based on whether they believe the selection still represents the structure of US industry.

We've chosen the FTSE 100 route, and will review, and if necessary amend, the list every quarter.

Of course, it does mean that many top quality firms are excluded because they are either too small or have chosen not to list their shares on a stock market. Also excluded are the local arms of the big multinationals like Toshiba, Microsoft and GlaxoSmithKline. These branches are critical to the overall health of the region's economy but we could not convince ourselves that their share price was routinely impacted by what they were doing in Cambridge, no matter how innovative.

The companies in the inaugural Silicon Fen Top 20 Share Price Index are:

Abcam; Acambis; Alizyme; Amino Technologies; ARM Holdings; Autonomy, Aveva; Cambridge Antibody; Cambridge Display Technology; CSR; CMR Fuel Cells; Dialight, Domino Printing; Intercytex; nCipher; NXT; Plasmon; Prelude Trust; TTP Communications; and, Xaar.

The base period for the index, when the index stood at exactly 100, was set at 5.15pm GMT on 1st February, 2006.

There will have to be changes in the make up of the index on 1 May, its scheduled review date. nCipher is likely to be removed if the takeover by SafeNet Inc is successful, as seems likely at this stage.

In addition, BioProgress will move into Cambridge Science Park in March and will force its way in. At this stage it would be a straight swap.

A recent poll has named Australia tops by those considering a move aboard. British nurses, bricklayers, carpenters, cooks, chefs, mechanics, engineers, and hairdressers currently stand the best chance of realising the dream lifestyle offered Down Under; they score the most points for their occupation, a key component in Australia’s immigration system.

In a poll released by BBC Online and ICM, a stunning 13 percent of Britons have revealed they want to emigrate in the near future; and 40 percent named Australia as their destination of choice. Survey respondents cited warmer weather and cost of living as their primary reasons for considering a move abroad.

“The Australian immigration system is points based. If your occupation is on the country’s Migration Occupation in Demands List, you get bonus points and your application is fast-tracked,” said Oonagh Baerveldt, spokesperson, Australian Visa Bureau.

“There are 80 occupations on the list at the moment. The list changes depending on where the labour shortages are in the Australian economy,” said Baerveldt. “Boom areas in the Australian economy include mining, housing and medical services and support, so you see those reflected on the current list.”

The points threshold for an Australian visa vary anywhere from 70 points to 120 points and for some sponsored visas, no points at all. The Australian Government is currently awarding 10 ‘extra’ points to applicants who are willing to live in a regional area, effectively lowering the points level to 100 for the skilled regional visa.

“Most people aim to score the maximum number of points so they are eligible for the Skilled Independent subclass 136 visa. That visa allows holders to live and work anywhere in Australia, in any occupation. You need 120 points to be eligible for the 136,” said Baerveldt.

The Australian visa application process is done in two parts; a skills assessment and application lodgement. At present, the process is taking anywhere from 12 to 18 months depending on the complexity of the application.

“There are several different visa streams available to British nationals. But, the fist step is finding out if you have the points to qualify. The Australian Government is looking for an upper threshold number of 144,000 migrants in 2006-2007. In 2004-2005 Britain provided the largest percent of skilled migrants to Australia, with 18,200 making the one way trip.

National Pediculosis Association Urges Families to Screen, Detect, Remove, Protect

This September marks the 22nd annual National Head Lice Prevention Month. National Pediculosis Association, sponsors of the month-long educational event, has developed a new mantra to guide prevention activities. NPA wants to shed light on how time-honored methods are user-friendly, cost-effective, and safe alternatives to the use of pesticides. Routine screening, early detection and thorough nit removal stops head lice and the disruption they can bring to families and communities.

The National Pediculosis Association (www. headlice. org) is heading into September's National Head Lice Prevention Month with a brand new mantra to help parents remember the single most effective phrase for protecting their children from head lice - "screen, detect, remove, protect!" It's the 22nd year for the event, designed to raise awareness on preventing head lice and unnecessary exposures to pesticides. Early detection is the best edge there is to stop communicable diseases in general but also an important opportunity to stem lice outbreaks before they grow into big problems.

"If you wait, the challenges associated with head lice can seem huge," said Deborah Altschuler of the NPA. "But parents who perform regular checks will find that the problem is manageable and will save time and worry in the long run."

NPA says those who say nit removal is too difficult describe situations where head lice infestations have gone undetected and great numbers of nits have accumulated. Removing nits and lice early in an infestation is the competitive edge against having so many of them that it becomes a tedious task. Screening, detecting and removing lice and nits are healthy benefits chemicals can't provide.

Also known on many health care calendars as the All Out Comb Out, National Head Lice Prevention Month coincides with a return to school. As school kids gather in again, they can pass on more than just stories detailing what they did during the summer... And since lice know no social or economic bounds, each new year provides a chance for the NPA to remind all parents that the most basic of approaches for controlling head lice are still the most practical and realistic.

Screening and early detection for head lice can be compared to other basic and affordable health measures that never change. Tooth brushing still helps protect against cavities, hand washing still protects against infection, and an inexpensive mosquito net still saves lives against malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Routine screening with early intervention is still the best prevention of not just lice, but the panic that can come when everyone is caught by surprise.

"Combing for lice and nits isn't just about removing them. It's also about being able to screen and assure yourself that you are free of them," said Altschuler. "NPA's approach is not a new one.
