"At such low levels there are serious consequences not just for the fish -- which risk being reduced to levels at which populations cannot recover -- but also for the food supply for a billion people around the world who turn to fish for a primary source of protein. This means terrible hardship for the coastal communities and 200 million people around the world whose livelihoods depend on fishing," added Sharpless.

To reverse the current trend, Oceana's (http://www. oceana. org) team of marine scientists, economists, lawyers and advocates focus on specific and concrete policy changes that address three things: excessive fishing capacity paid for with government subsidies, bottom trawling which destroys essential ocean habitat, and excessive rates of bycatch (the catch and killing of wild fish in the pursuit of commercially targeted species). 

"Fixing the oceans may be the biggest environmental problem we can solve relatively simply. We know that when fishing pressure is reduced, many collapsed fisheries do recover -- if we protect them while there are still healthy ocean communities for them to live in," said Sharpless.

Members of the Vancouver chapter of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights are challenging psychiatry’s statement that 140,000 British Columbia children have some sort of “mental disorder” by calling it fraudulent, an attempt to cash in at the expense of vulnerable and helpless little children and an effort to seduce well meaning teachers, parents, government officials and others into believing their trumped-up “disorders” actually exist.

Since last October, official warnings of the side effects of psychiatric drugs by regulatory agencies worldwide have escalated rapidly - sixteen in the last twelve months alone - culminating in a September 2005 landmark report by the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, which issued a strong warning against false labeling of youth with the psychiatric diagnosis of "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder" (ADHD) and its treatment with powerful mind-altering psychiatric drugs.

Psychiatry’s drugs of choice for Attention Deficit Disorder ( ADHD), one of their invented “illnesses”, came under fire last month when Health Canada asked all the makers of drugs used for ADHD to submit data from all clinical trials and post-marketing reports by the end of 2005. The data will be examined following it’s submission in the new year. The drugs that will be reviewed are Concerta, Adderall XR, Dexadrine, Ritalin and Attenade; drugs which are given to children for ADHD.

The psychiatric amphetamine type drug Adderall which was banned from the Canadian market in February 2005 and then allowed back on the market in August, is now to be reviewed again according to a spokesperson for Health Canada.

On September 29, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration ordered that “black box” warnings be placed on a commonly prescribed ADHD drug, Strattera, after clinical trials linked the drug to suicidal thoughts and behavior. The FDA indicated that the new warning stems from an ongoing review of all ADHD drugs and their possible association with suicide.

Brian Beaumont, President of the Vancouver chapter of the Citizens Commission on Human Rights stated, "The fact is, there is nothing in any medical or scientific literature that confirms the existence of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It was invented by a handful of psychiatrists by a show of hands at an American Psychiatric Association meeting in the 80’s. Thus, psychiatrists are labeling and drugging a non-existent malady which is an indictable offence, fraud and child abuse.”

American troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan and other veterans cannot depend solely on the Departments of Defense (DoD) and Veterans Affairs (VA) for mental health care—even though the civilian mental health care system is in crisis, according to the annual convention of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI (http://www. nami. org/)) held this past week.

“The VA and DoD can’t do it alone. We need to rely on community providers,” declared Jon Towers, senior policy advisor on the U. S. Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs at a symposium broadcast live on C-SPAN (http://www. c-span. org/Watch/Media/2010/07/02/HP/A/35082/Panel+Discussion+on+Veterans+and+Military+Mental+Health. aspx).

In the opening speech (http://www. youtube. com/watch? v=1BoMPGUxz1M) at the 2010 NAMI Convention, U. S. Representative Patrick Kennedy warned, “Every day in America, our military veterans are being held behind enemy lines” because of the nation’s “Byzantine mental health system.”

“By changing the mental health system for veterans, we will change it for all of us,” Kennedy said.

“We’re only going to see great progress when the civilian community starts paying attention,” said Tom Tarantino, legislative associate for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) in the July 2 symposium.

“This shouldn’t be a DoD-VA dialogue, but a national dialogue,” said the Army Surgeon General's special assistant for mental health, Col. Elspeth Cameron Ritchie, M. D., who called for a “needs assessment” in local communities to identify duplications and gaps in efforts.

The 2010 NAMI Convention symposium followed a speech by Pamela Hyde, administrator of the U. S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), who said as many soldiers in the Army are dying from suicide as have died in Iraq.

However, state and local mental health services face massive state budget cuts and long-term lack of investment. In Grading the States (http://www. nami. org/grades), a NAMI report published in 2009 that assessed state mental healthy care systems based on 65 specific criteria, the average grade was only a D.

The 2010 NAMI Convention symposium included Ira Katz, M. D., the VA's, deputy chief patient care services officer and Joy Ilem, deputy national legislative director for Disabled American Veterans.

“The mental health of service members depends on the mental health of family members,” Towers said.

More than two million American children have had parents deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan,” Hyde said. “A growing number of families are military-connected. The numbers are huge.”

NAMI has worked with the VA to provide its Family-to-Family Education Program to families of veterans and also maintains an on-line Veterans Resource Center.

Consumers are hearing a lot about resveratrol pills these days and they need not wait till 2012, when resveratrol is scheduled to be approved as a drug.

Resveratrol vulnerable to degradation
Resveratrol is vulnerable to degradation and molecular rearrangement (from trans to cis resveratrol) from exposure to ultraviolet light, heat and oxygen. Special encapsulation procedures are required to prevent this.

Longevinex® parallels the quality of research-grade resveratrol, which is sealed in an opaque, airtight vial that is stored frozen to ensure quality.

Longevinex® resveratrol capsules are sealed in an airtight environment (internal nitrogen bubble) and never exposed to light or heat, similar to the way resveratrol is preserved in a bottle of red wine. (Patent applied for) Wine bottlers know their product turns to vinegar if there is crack in the cork. For centuries wine has been known to have unusual medicinal properties not provided in grape juice. This is because the fermentation of wine extracts resveratrol to a 1000-fold greater concentration than grape juice and then the dark corked bottle, stored in a cool place, preserves its most precious ingredient, resveratrol.

Resveratrol extolled
Resveratrol has been historically extolled by researchers as the molecule that molecularly mimics a low-calorie diet and is responsible for better cardiovascular health among French red wine drinkers (The French Paradox). In animal studies resveratrol has been shown to inhibit an enzyme called fatty acid synthase that converts sugar to fat. "This may be a primary reason why the French are so lean despite their high-calorie diet," says Sardi.

Furthermore, resveratrol remarkably preconditions the heart and brain to prevent injury to tissues in the event of a heart attack or stroke, as demonstrated in animal experiments. Recently researchers found that a low concentration of resveratrol eradicates beta amyloid plaque from the brain of animals. Beta amyloid is believed to be responsible for memory loss in the latter years of life.

Resveratrol is also an enzyme inhibitor. For example, it inhibits monoamine oxidase, an enzyme that causes mental depression; inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2 inhibitor), an enzyme involved in inflammation; and inhibits telomerase, the enzyme responsible for shortening the end caps (telomeres) of chromosomes.

Resveratrol also stifles the spread of disease by its ability to inhibit adhesion of bacteria, blood clots and tumor cells to the wall of blood vessels, as demonstrated in laboratory experiments.

Dietary supplement quality
Dietary supplements are of notorious sub-standard quality with experts claiming one in four products are mislabeled and may not even contain the ingredients listed on the label. The problem is more marked in resveratrol supplements. "Longevinex submitted 17 brands of resveratrol supplements for independent lab testing which revealed many brands provided no resveratrol whatsoever and others far less than the label indicated," says Bill Sardi, president of Longevinex.
Longevinex® exceeds newly issued Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) for dietary supplements. Since the contents in Longevinex capsules are suspended in rice bran oil, which acts as a preservative for polyphenols like resveratrol and quercetin, its liquid contents must be placed in a sealed capsule.

While GMPs only call for testing of raw materials, Longevinex goes one step further and tests finished goods and does not rely upon test data provided by raw material suppliers in foreign countries. "The raw materials used in Longevinex capsules are quarantined for days to test for contamination, pesticides and heavy metals, prior to production, and then once encapsulated, are re-quarantined and re-tested for contamination and the presence of trans resveratrol," says Sardi.

Longevinex employs three antioxidants
Longevinex® provides three powerful mineral-chelating antioxidants in its formula (resveratrol, quercetin and IP6 rice bran), comparable to the three antioxidants in red wine (resveratrol, quercetin, catechin). IP6 rice bran was chosen as a substitute for catechin because it is a stronger antioxidant, uniquely reduces oxygen-induced free radical formation by lowering the oxygen-carrying potential of red blood cells, and blocks crystallization of calcium in the body, says Sardi.
