Cosmo Hotel Hong Kong as Leading Smoke-free Hotel

Cosmo Hotel Hong Kong as Leading Smoke-free Hotel

Cosmo Hotel Hong Kong goes 100% smoke-free in all guest rooms and indoor areas, making it the first 4-star smoke-free hotel in Hong Kong.

(PRWEB) July 31, 2010

As a growing number of travelers are more concern about having a healthy and smoke-free environment, effective August 1, 2010, Cosmo Hotel Hong Kong (http://www. cosmohotel. com. hk) goes 100% smoke-free in all guest rooms and indoor areas, making it the first 4-star smoke-free hotel in Hong Kong (http://www. cosmohotel. com. hk/accommodation. html).

An oasis found in the hustle and bustle

Located within the hectic business and entertainment area of Causeway Bay and Wan Chai, Cosmo Hotel visions the indispensable need of providing a health-conscious and smoke-sensitive environment for global travelers. The hotel understands that offering a choice of smoking/non-smoking room is no longer adequate as third hand smoke – the residue of tobacco smoke that settles in the air even after a cigarette has been extinguished – affects human health on an equal level. Considering this, Cosmo Hotel decides to make 100% smoke-free in all guest rooms and indoor areas, yet the outdoor Breeze is still available for smokers, and become an oasis within the busy jungle, hoping to contribute a piece of smoke-free wonderland. “Providing our guests absolute comfort is always the aim we strive to achieve. Now with this new measure, we guarantee our guests the best quality of an environment to stay in. We see ourselves as a smoke-free zone within the busy-happening jungle just as an oasis in a dessert,” said Anita Chan, General Manager of Cosmo Hotel Hong Kong.

Being socially responsible for all guests and staff

Since all hotel rooms share the same ventilation system and central air conditioning unit, the fact is particles infused with smoke are unavoidably transferred throughout the hotel via air circulation. With this in mind, Cosmo Hotel finds it necessary to implement a 100% smoke-free policy so as to ensure its guests a perfect staying environment. Benefits extend not only to guests but hotel staff since their working environment is now greatly improved.

HealthForumOnline Offers New Online CE Course on Working with Transgender Individuals

HealthForumOnline Offers New Online CE Course on Working with Transgender Individuals

HealthForumOnline (HFO), announces a new CE course entitled Health Care Needs and Health-Related Disparities: Building Cultural Competence in Working with Transgender Individuals to their extensive online library of nationally-approved continuing education (CE) courses for mental health professionals, nurses and allied healthcare workers. This theory - and evidence-based CE course discusses the multiple barriers to competent healthcare that transgender people face and how these life challenges contribute to substance abuse and HIV risk behaviors in this population. Healthcare professionals working with transgender people express the desire to treat patients with competence and respect, but frequently lack the information and resources to guide their practice. This course provides an introduction to the range of gender expressions and clinical experiences professionals may encounter along with culturally competent treatment guidelines and ways to overcome healthcare-related barriers among transgender individuals. All of HFO's CE/CEU courses are fast, convenient and especially cost-effective as health professionals have free ongoing access to course updates beyond completion of the CE activity.

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) March 31, 2009

HealthForumOnline (HFO) (http://www. healthforumonline. com/), a nationally-approved (APA, ASWB, NBCC, PSNA, CA-BBS) (http://www. healthforumonline. com/Accreditations/44/) online provider of continuing education (CE) for psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals announces the addition of a new online CE course, Health Care Needs and Health-Related Disparities: Building Cultural Competence in Working with Transgender Individuals (http://www. healthforumonline. com/Our-Courses/Courses/47/categoryId__26/productId__85/), to the new LGBT category (http://www. healthforumonline. com/Our-Courses/16/categoryId__26/) of their extensive online CE resource library (http://www. healthforumonline. com/Our-Courses/16/).

The term transgender applies to a range of diverse individuals whose gender identity and/or gender expression is not concordant with the gender they were assigned at birth. Among many associated life challenges, transgender people face multiple social and institutional barriers to competent mental and physical healthcare regardless of whether or not they seek hormonal and/or surgical intervention. In addition, these life challenges and other related factors often contribute to substance abuse and HIV risk behaviors in this group. Thus, transgender individuals frequently find themselves in need of and simultaneously at odds with the healthcare system. "Healthcare providers who work with transgender people often express the desire to treat their patients with competence and respect, but also acknowledge frustration with the lack of information and resources available to inform their practice and expand their awareness of this highly varied population" notes course author Dr. Jae Sevelious.

While fear of being stigmatized and discriminated against can make it difficult to obtain an accurate prevalence of transgender identity, Bakker, Van Kesteren, Gooren, & Bezemer's 1993 study based in the Netherlands estimates that 1 in 11,900 people are male-to-female (MTF) and 1 in 30,400 are female-to-male (FTM). "What we do know is that transgender people are everywhere, in every culture, and in every size town and city" said Dr. Laura Stanton, co-founder and Clinical Director of HealthForumOnline.

This HFO course provides an introduction to the range of gender expressions and experiences providers may encounter in their practice along with treatment guidelines and ways to address the multiple barriers that transgender people often face in their search for culturally competent care. An overview of substance use and HIV prevalence and risk behaviors in transgender communities is be provided, along with risk reduction strategies and recommendations for enhancing quality of care for transgender clients.

Psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and other allied health professionals can now chose from HFO's 19 categories of topics related to health psychology and behavioral medicine (i. e., ethics, cancer adaptation, women's health, cultural diversity, eating disorders, reproduction/sexuality, aging/gerontology, pediatric behavioral medicine, assessment, chemical dependency, chronic/acute illness, clinical intervention, group therapy, infectious disease, long-term care, neuropsychology, pain management, spirituality, LGBT issues) containing over 60 courses available online or as downloadable, transportable PDFs. Health professionals can log on and complete CE courses at their own pace, on their own schedule, anywhere they have Internet access. CE certificates can be downloaded, printed and reprinted at any time to meet licensure renewal needs. Lastly, since HFO understands that busy health professionals need to have fast, convenient and cost-effective resources for state-of the-science education, we notify customers when their purchased CE course has been updated and enable customers to review these updates for free online even after they have completed the CE activity and generated their CE certificate.

For more information on this course or a complete listing of titles in our online CE resource library, visit HealthForumOnline. com.

About HealthForumOnline:

HealthForumOnline (HFO) is approved as a provider of CE courses by the American Psychological Association, the National Board of Certified Counselors, the Association of Social Work Boards, and several state professional organizations, including the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation, and the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. HFO's CE Program's Advisory Committee and authors (http://www. healthforumonline. com/About-HealthForumOnline-Psychologists-Social-Workers-Counselors-Nurses-Physicians-and-Allied-Health-Professionals/18/) are comprised of over 60 nationally-recognized experts in behavioral medicine.

Laugh Doctor's Happiness Survey Uncovers Tips for Self Improvement

Laugh Doctor's Happiness Survey Uncovers Tips for Self Improvement

A new happiness survey conducted by the Laugh Doctor reveals strategies for self improvement.

Louisville, KY (PRWEB) March 1, 2006

A national happiness survey conducted by psychiatrist and self improvement guru Dr. Cliff Kuhn, reveals that 56 percent of Americans are happier today than 10 years ago. The survey, conducted in February 2006, uncovered key behaviors which help individuals become happier without the need for high stress lifestyle changes.

According to survey results, brief contact with others during daily routines contributed to feeling happier. However, the need for periodic disconnects throughout the day were equally important to most respondents. In a paradoxical trend; 73 percent of consumers polled stated that they engage in conversations with strangers when running through daily activities while 65 percent admit to not answering their cell phone every time it rings.

“Reaching out and sharing a laugh, a thought, an observance with a stranger keeps people feeling connected,” Dr. Kuhn said. “Taking control of your cell phone reduces stress and the combination of the two nets greater happiness.”

The survey also revealed that health ranked most important as a factor to one’s happiness. Kuhn said current research proves that bringing more fun into one's life aids health by reducing stress and anxiety, boosting morale, enhancing communication, inspiring creativity and maintaining hope.

The Laugh Doctor suggests incorporating the following habits into one's daily routine to ensure better health and increased happiness:

1.Go the Extra Smile – Increasing “smileage” requires increased smile awareness and a measure of self-discipline. The payoff is that even a “forced” smile changes one's physiology for the better in ways that can be measured – decreased stress, heightened immunity and increased tolerance for pain and frustration. In addition, a smile acts as a “fun magnet,” drawing positive reactions and energy from others.

2.Laugh With Yourself – Laughing with ourselves enables people to quickly recover and learn from their mistakes. It is not a demeaning practice. It actually enhances self-esteem and helps let go of useless self-recriminations. The net result is increased positive energy for healing and growth.

“Helping people be happier is my life’s work, I’ve been studying the phenomenon of happiness for over 35 years both in my private practice as well as working with groups and corporations nationally. Everyone has the power to be in the 56 percent of Americans that feel happier today versus 10 years ago. I welcome the opportunity to help you achieve a level of joy and happiness you may not have thought possible. It all starts with a smile.”

Bills. com Offers "Top 10" List of Financial Resolutions for 2009

Bills. com Offers "Top 10" List of Financial Resolutions for 2009

New Year's personal finance resolutions can minimize money worries.

San Mateo, CA (PRWEB) January 7, 2009

The ball has dropped in Times Square, holiday festivities are over, and credit card bills are about to roll in -- making the timing right for Americans to resolve to adopt smart financial strategies in 2009, said Ethan Ewing, president of free online consumer portal Bills. com.

"At this time last year, the stock market was near its record high, unemployment was near record lows, and the bursting housing bubble was the main financial concern facing the United States," said Ewing. "Today, with the country in a very different situation, the New Year is a wonderful time for new resolve."

Ewing suggests Americans consider these steps to outline their financial goals for 2009 and take steps toward reaching them.

1. Create a spending plan. Create a straightforward budget for the year, Ewing suggested, and monitor it monthly - or weekly (making sure to include your spouse or partner if applicable). Each month, review your progress and revise as needed.

2. Live with cash. Move away from credit cards and avoid going into debt, especially for daily, routine and ongoing purchases. Write checks or use automatic bill payments for bills, and withdraw enough cash or use a debit card for other expenses. Track withdrawals diligently to avoid going into overdraft.

3. Pay bills on time. "On-time payments are the most important element of good credit," Ewing said. Keep bills in one location and check that spot weekly. Set up online payments or write due dates on a calendar to stay on track.

4. Save. Aspire to save 10 percent or more of your income, but even if you can manage only a few dollars a week, get in the habit and start, and then add to your savings whenever you can. After you pay off a bill, add the amount you would normally pay toward the bill to your savings instead. If you get a raise, bonus, cash gift or other one-time monetary receipt, save it - or at least a portion of it.

5. Care for your health. Money cannot buy good health, but poor health can cost a bundle. Exercise and eat well, get enough sleep and, in these stressful times, take time to pursue relaxation practices, whether that means spiritual practices, meditation, a workout or coffee with a friend.

6. Do more with less. Take care of household maintenance, barter services or goods with friends or neighbors, and fix up old belongings rather than rushing to buy new ones. Some statistics say that people buy 30 percent more when shopping with a larger cart -- so even a small change like avoiding the store cart when possible could make your life simpler and your budget happier.

7. Participate in a retirement plan. Many believe now is a great time to invest for the long term. Especially if your employer matches contributions, contribute to a business retirement plan. If you are on your own for retirement savings, invest in an Individual IRA, Roth IRA and/or plan for self-employed persons.

8. Obtain adequate insurance. Insurance protects against expenses you cannot cover yourself. Be sure you have life insurance to protect your family, auto insurance to cover your car, health insurance to provide for at least major medical incidents, and home or renter's insurance to protect possessions from theft or disaster.

9. Pay taxes on time. File your income tax return on or before April 15, with any tax due, to avoid penalties. At the same time, adjust withholding if needed to account for changes in income. That step might be especially important this year for those with lost or reduced work. If your refund was large, have fewer taxes withheld so you are not giving an interest-free loan to the government.

10. Get help if you need it. If you lose your job, file for unemployment quickly. Many states have payment delays that mean filers wait weeks for a check. If you are worried that you will be unable to pay rent, mortgage or other obligations, talk to your bank or a reputable debt resolution company to learn about your options.

"Many Americans feel helpless about the economy at the moment," Ewing acknowledged. "But by making these resolutions, they can take charge of your financial future in 2009 and have a happier New Year."

IntelliSoft Group Focuses on Protecting Customer Investment in Medical Credentialing Systems -- Budget Constraints and Forced Upgrades in Medical Credentialing Automation

IntelliSoft Group offers their new IntelliChoice upgrade program. An industry leader in medical credentialing software, IntelliSoft Group is the only vendor offering the SaaS (Software as a Service) deployment option. SaaS is an excellent option for those medicial organizations that have budget restraints, yet are in need of medical credentialing software.

Nashua, NH (Vocus) December 4, 2009

ISG Group, LLC, doing business as IntelliSoft Group has announced that it is offering special incentives to customers of Healthline Systems to switch to IntelliSoft Group solutions. The IntelliChoice upgrade program will focus on delivering a cost effective IntelliCred Phoenix upgrade. Healthline customers can switch to IntelliCred Phoenix, offering cost effective options, migration assistance, and investment protection.

Regulatory standards by the Joint Commission and other accrediting bodies are now in effect, and automation in the credentialing process has become a necessity. With “end of life” software support, and no budgeted funds to purchase upgrades or new software, IntelliSoft Group is also meeting the demands of medical staff services by also offering the Software as a Service, or SaaS deployment option.

Organizations using medical credentialing software (http://www. intellisoftgroup. com) generally have either client server or web based license options. “Software as a Service” (SaaS), gives access to the same software over the internet through a budget friendly monthly payment program. Licensed software is paid in full at the time of purchase, which can be a large capital expenditure for an organization to absorb. SaaS is priced as a monthly access fee, spreading the cost of the software and removing the burden of support from the organizations IT department.” “Our deployment options, functionality, and support of our products make IntelliCred Phoenix™ an excellent solution in medical credentialing software automation,” stated John Eddy, vice president of sales and marketing. “IntelliCred SaaS combined with the IntelliChoice upgrade program is a compelling reason to switch to IntelliSoft.”

“Although we still offer traditional software licensing, our Software as a Service option has proven to be very successful in these economic times. We are very pleased that we are meeting the demands of the market with the SaaS option. Customers have been pleased with this offering, and more are electing to purchase our software in this manner,” stated IntelliSoft Group president, Mike Melville.”

New Tort Reform Report Naming Cook County a 'Judicial Hellhole' Recycles Old Myths, Says Chicago Medical Malpractice Attorney

New Tort Reform Report Naming Cook County a 'Judicial Hellhole' Recycles Old Myths, Says Chicago Medical Malpractice Attorney

Illinois medical malpractice lawyer Patrick A. Salvi says ATRA report wrongly connects medical negligence litigation to healthcare costs and physician shortages.

Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) December 21, 2010

Cook County received a No. 5 ranking in a national tort reform group’s “Judicial Hellholes” report, but the group’s reasons for the distinction are way off the mark, Chicago medical malpractice attorneyPatrick A. Salvi says.

“This report recycles old arguments that try to connect medical negligence litigation to rising healthcare costs and physician shortages,” says Salvi, a member of the Illinois personal injury law firm of Salvi, Schostok & Pritchard P. C. and an adjunct instructor at the University of Notre Dame School of Law.

“Study after study has exposed those arguments for what they are – myths,” Salvi says.

This marks the sixth straight year that Cook County, Illinois, has received the “Judicial Hellhole” label from the American Tort Reform Association, a nonprofit group based in Washington, D. C.

The report singled out a Cook County judge’s ruling that struck down a legislative limit on pain and suffering damages in medical liability cases, which the Illinois Supreme Court upheld in February.

According to ATRA, the decision in the case, Lebron v. Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, will result in a rise in medical malpractice claims, higher insurance premiums and an “anti-doctor” climate that will drive physicians out of the state. As a result, the report said, “residents’ access to affordable health care” would be diminished.

Salvi, however, points to a U. S. Congressional Budget Office finding that malpractice costs account for less than two percent of the nation’s health care spending.

He also says a February 2010 report from the American Association for Justice, which cites the American Medical Association’s own data, showed that the number of physicians per 100,000 residents was actually 21 percent higher in states without caps on medical liability damages than in states with caps.

Additionally, a 2006 study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that cases involving actual medical errors were compensated less often than cases where no error existed.

The researchers examined 1,452 claims from five malpractice insurance companies across the country and focused on four clinical categories: Surgery, obstetrics, medication and missed or delayed diagnosis.

In 16 percent of the cases, claims went unpaid even though the patient’s injury had been caused by a medical error, while in only 10 percent of the cases, claims were paid that did not involve an actual error. Overall, 72 percent of the cases that did not involve an error did not receive compensation.

“As that study showed, frivolous lawsuits are rare, and meritorious medical malpractice claims aren’t the problem,” Salvi says. “These tort reform groups seem to suggest that the best way to cut the cost of medical errors is to place caps on damages or throw out meritorious lawsuits. That’s wrong. If you want to reduce costs, reduce medical errors.”

In addition to Cook County, two more Illinois counties were named in ATRA’s “watch list” – Madison County and St. Clair County – while McClean County, Illinois, was listed among “other areas to watch.”

Washington, DC (PRWEB) June 1, 2009

The Chinese Drywall Complaint Center is focusing its efforts on the metro areas of New Orleans, and Baton Rouge, in an attempt to discover how many newer subdivisions contain toxic Chinese drywall. According to the group, "our big worry is that many of the newer subdivisions built in the New Orleans, or Baton Rouge metro areas contain toxic Chinese drywall." If a homeowner in one of these areas suspects they have toxic Chinese drywall in their home or condominium, they should contact the Chinese drywall complaint Center immediately at 866-714-6466, or contact them via their web site at Http://ChineseDrywallComplaintCenter. Question: When was the toxic Chinese drywall product introduced to the US?
Answer: The toxic Chinese drywall was first introduced to the US in 2001. At its peak it was used in Louisiana new home construction, or home repairs/remodeling between post Katrina 2005, until 2008.

Question: What is the easiest way to tell if your new Louisiana home (built or remodeled between 2005 and 2008) has toxic Chinese drywall?
Answer: Go to Americas Watchdog's Chinese Drywall Complaint Center's web site and click the indicator page (Http://ChineseDrywallComplaintCenter. Com)

If you, or your family members have the health symptoms, combined with black or charred electrical receptacle box copper ground wires, and black AC coils, in all likelihood you have toxic Chinese drywall in your home (homes built or remodeled between 2005-2008 are the peak years in Louisiana). Answer: Literally up to a million US homeowners, and their families are at risk due to exposure to toxic Chinese drywall. This group includes young children, adults, and senior citizens. Americas Watchdog says, "we need an immediate massive federal response, that includes testing, that will tell us if a home is even safe to live in; we need to know the medical issues associated with exposure to toxic Chinese drywall; we need to know how to rebuild homes that have been exposed to toxic Chinese drywall; and we need this information now." According to the group, "we also need a new chairperson for the US Products Safety Commission, and we will need a massive federal program to assist affected US homeowners, rebuild their homes and restore their health and the health of their children." The group says, "there has been no recall of toxic Chinese drywall as of this date, by the US Government, and we don't even know how to fix these 100,000's of affected US homes."

Question: What US states are most at risk for having toxic Chinese drywall?
Answer: According to the Chinese Drywall Complaint Center,"next to Florida; Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Texas, at this moment all appear to have toxic Chinese drywall in the heaviest concentrations, and we want to hear from the victims, especially if they live in sub divisions."

Talyst Reaches Major Milestone: 500 Implementations in Long-Term Care, Acute Care and Corrections

Talyst Reaches Major Milestone: 500 Implementations in Long-Term Care, Acute Care and Corrections

Talyst Talyst demos InsiteRx Remote Dispensing System™ at ASCP as one option for addressing health reform’s new medication waste medication waste reduction mandates.

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) September 24, 2010

Talyst Inc. (http://talyst. com/) announced today that it has surpassed 500 customers of its world-class software and proven hardware components to enhance efficiency, provide greater inventory control, and improve patient safety in several healthcare environments. Talyst, exhibiting this week at the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) 32nd Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition, has served acute care hospitals and integrated healthcare companies since 2002. In 2009 it leveraged its expertise in pharmacy automation (http://talyst. com/) to build unique systems designed specifically to address the needs of long-term care facilities and correctional institutions.

At ASCP Talyst (find Talyst on Twitter @Talyst_Inc.) will demo the InSiteRx™ (http://www. insiterx. com/) Remote Dispensing System, an on-location automated remote dispensing technology specifically designed for long-term care facilities. The recently-passed Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (March 23, 2010) mandates the use of specific uniform dispensing techniques, “such as weekly, daily, or automated dose dispensing” to reduce waste in this market.

“While we’re waiting in the wings for the new short cycle fill, or ‘7-day-or-less,’ mandates to take effect January 1, 2012, we’re excited to share with pharmacies the remote dispensing options available to them today,” said Carla Corkern, Talyst CEO. “With automated technologies such as InSiteRx, Talyst is able to provide multi-dose, on-demand medication dispensing (http://talyst. com/) with patient-specific packaging, empowering facilities to virtually eliminate waste and reduce medication errors.”

For example: Wellfount Pharmacy in Indianapolis services long-term care facilities and has implemented InSiteRx technology. The InSiteRx units dispense medication in patient-specific, multi-dose packages, right before the medication pass.

"In this industry, there is a significant amount of waste," said Paul Leamon, president and chief executive officer of Wellfount Pharmacy. According to Leamon, InsiteRx is enabling Wellfount to achieve a 90 percent decrease in the number of returned medications, which otherwise would have resulted in large amounts of waste.

“We are thrilled to provide so many pharmacies and customers with innovative technologies that will improve the way medications are handled across the country,” said Corkern. “Our customers, all 500-plus, are every-day reminders that change will happen. We want to get out there now and help other pharmacy and facility executives effectively plan to meet the new law’s requirements by 2012.”

About Talyst
Talyst is engineering the safer pharmacy. The company was founded in 2002 to provide automated medication management systems to acute care hospital pharmacies. The following year Talyst launched AutoPharm®, the innovative software platform designed to drive a complete suite of medication storage, packaging, refrigeration, and barcoding hardware.

As of 2010, Talyst has installed automated systems in more than 500 acute care hospitals, integrated healthcare companies, long-term care facilities, and corrections facilities. Talyst is dedicated to delivering world-class software and proven hardware components to enhance efficiency, provide greater inventory control, and improve patient safety in all care environments.

Salmon Aquaculture Leaders Meet to Begin Process of Revising Draft Salmon Standards

Salmon Aquaculture Leaders Meet to Begin Process of Revising Draft Salmon Standards

The Salmon Aquaculture Dialogue met in Saint John, New Brunswick this week to discuss draft standards to improve the environmental and social sustainability of the salmon aquaculture industry.

Saint John, New Brunswick (Vocus) November 3, 2010

The Salmon Aquaculture Dialogue met in Saint John, New Brunswick this week to discuss draft standards to improve the environmental and social sustainability of the salmon aquaculture industry.

Approximately 90 people—including representatives from environmental organizations and first nations, salmon producers, retailers, fishermen and scientists from the world’s most prominent salmon farming regions—discussed feedback on the standards received by 53 organizations during the first comment period for the standards, held from August to October.

“We’ve come a long way to create the standards,” said Mary Ellen Walling of the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance, a member of the nine-person Steering Committee that manages the Dialogue process. “The committee received a significant amount of relevant comments during the first public comment period. The open discussions around these comments during the Dialogue meeting in Saint John will help us revise the standards and wrap up the process.”

Among the key issues discussed at the meeting were how to ensure that ecosystem health is addressed in a farm-based standard, making sure the standards are clear and can be audited, and balancing complexity and cost of the standard with the need to have meaningful environmental and social measurements.

After incorporating input from the meeting in Saint John and completing several sections in the document, the draft standards will be posted for the last comment period. Final standards are expected by mid-2011.

“There are many challenging issues in creating a standard for salmon farming,” said salmon Dialogue steering committee member Jay Ritchlin of the Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture Reform, “This meeting gave us valuable feedback on how to move forward.”

Numerous multi-day Dialogue meetings geared toward sharing information and shaping the standards have been held in key salmon producing regions – including Norway, Chile, Scotland and British Columbia. Also, feedback was provided during public comment periods held in 2008 and 2009 to vet the draft principles, criteria and indicators, as well as outreach meetings over the last several years with salmon farming stakeholders. Experts assisted, as needed, in evaluating salmon-related science to help shape the draft standards.

After being finalized, the standards will be held by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council and amended periodically to reflect changes in science and technology, as well as to encourage innovation and continuous improvement.

For more information about the salmon Dialogue and to provide feedback during the next public comment period, go to http://www. worldwildlife. org/salmondialogue

Notes to Editor:
World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is the catalyst for a series of species-specific roundtables, called the Aquaculture Dialogues, that consist of multiple stakeholders developing standards for certifying 12 aquaculture species: salmon, shrimp, trout, tilapia, pangasius, abalone, clams, oysters, mussels, scallops, cobia and Seriola.  The outcome from each Dialogue will be a set of measurable, performance-based standards that will minimize the key environmental and social impacts related to aquaculture. The standards will be created through an open, transparent and consensus-oriented process.  The Salmon Aquaculture Dialogue is driven by a Steering Committee that includes representatives from Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance, Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture Reform, Fundación Terram, Marine Harvest, Norwegian Seafood Federation, Pew Environment Group, SalmonChile, Skretting, and WWF.  To learn more about the Dialogues, go to http://www. worldwildlife. org/aquadialogues

Over Eighty Percent of U. S. Drivers More Focused on Extending Life of Current Vehicle, Only Half Follow Regular Maintenance Program

Over Eighty Percent of U. S. Drivers More Focused on Extending Life of Current Vehicle, Only Half Follow Regular Maintenance Program

CarMD. com Corporation survey has found a disparity in vehicle owners' desire to keep their cars healthy, and willingness to invest time and money on actually doing so.

Fountain Valley, CA (PRWEB) July 21, 2010

CarMD. com Corp., today announced it has found a disparity between drivers’ desires to keep their vehicles healthy longer and a willingness to invest in making it a reality, according to a survey conducted online by Harris Interactive® on behalf of CarMD. com Corp. The survey indicates that 82 percent of U. S. adults who own or lease a vehicle and had a vehicle prior to their current vehicle are more focused on extending the life of their current vehicle than they have been in the past with a prior vehicle. However, only half (52%) of those who’ve ever owned/leased a vehicle follow a regularly scheduled automotive maintenance program. The survey also found that one-quarter (25%) of of those who’ve ever owned/leased a vehicle like to take care of their vehicle but have been stretching out the time between services lately to save money.

“This study offers a revealing glimpse into the minds and behavior of consumers as it relates to their second largest purchase after a home,” said Art Jacobsen, director of business development for CarMD. com Corp. “We already know from industry reports that consumers are keeping their cars longer due to the economy, yet this report indicates they’re not doing everything they can to protect that investment with preventative maintenance. It’s one thing to put off a hair cut, car wash or manicure when money is tight, but it’s concerning to see that drivers would risk their vehicle’s health and their own safety.”

CarMD has released the survey to help communicate the role regular, preventative maintenance programs play in extending the life of a vehicle and saving consumers money.

The survey found that among those who’ve ever put off auto maintenance/repairs, the main reason is due to a belief that repairs would cost more than they wanted to spend or could afford to spend (65%). Other reasons include: didn’t have time (34%), didn’t think it was serious (28%), were afraid to find out what the problem was (12%) and didn’t have a mechanic/repair facility they could trust (11%). Additional survey findings include:
Those with household incomes of less than $75k who had a vehicle prior to their current vehicle (85%) were more likely to indicate they are more focused on extending the life of their current vehicle than those who had a vehicle prior to their current vehicle with household incomes over $75k (77%)

85 percent of those aged 35-44, who had a vehicle prior to their current vehicle, are more focused on extending the life of their current vehicle than they have been in the past with a prior vehicle

64 percent of U. S. adults who ever owned/leased a vehicle have ever put off automotive maintenance/repairs

Women (72%) are more likely than men (58%) to indicate that they have put off automotive maintenance/repairs because they were afraid it would cost more than they wanted to spend or could afford.

CarMD. com Corp. distributes the award-winning CarMD® Vehicle Health System, which gives drivers a quick and easy way to analyze their vehicle’s “Check Engine” health from home and detect hidden engine problems before they result in expensive repairs. When a problem is found, CarMD gives vehicle owners peace of mind by letting them know what the problem is and what they should expect to pay for repairs in their zip code. Through CarMD, the vehicle owner can understand how serious the problem is, budget to have repairs made and make educated decisions to help extend the life of their vehicle. The CarMD support line provides customers live support for diagnosing vehicle repair requirements and costs from Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certified technicians based in the U. S.

Survey and Sample Methodology
This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive® on behalf of CarMD. com Corporation from April 21 – 23, 2010 via its QuickQuerySM online omnibus service, interviewing a nationwide sample of 2,449 U. S. adults aged 18 years and older, 2,340 of which have ever owned/leased a vehicle and 2,242 currently have a vehicle. Results were weighted as needed for region, age within gender, education, household income and race/ethnicity. Propensity score weighting was also used to adjust for respondents’ propensity to be online.

All sample surveys and polls, whether or not they use probability sampling, are subject to multiple sources of error which are most often not possible to quantify or estimate, including sampling error, coverage error, error associated with non-response, error associated with question wording and response options, and post-survey weighting and adjustments. Therefore, Harris Interactive avoids the words “margin of error” as they are misleading. All that can be calculated are different possible sampling errors with different probabilities for pure, unweighted, random samples with 100 percent response rates. These are only theoretical because no published polls come close to this ideal.

Respondents for this survey were selected from among those who have agreed to participate in Harris Interactive surveys. The data have been weighted to reflect the composition of the U. S. adult population. Because the sample is based on those who agreed to be invited to participate in the Harris Interactive online research panel, no estimates of theoretical sampling error can be calculated.

Leading plastic surgeon, Dr. Richard Ellenbogen has harnessed the recent discovery of stem cells in liposuctioned fat to create a True Stem Cell Face Lift through the “Activation” of dormant stem cells. As the original facial fat transfer pioneer, Dr. Ellenbogen has channeled his research into a superior procedure using lower level laser to deliver - The “Activated” Stem Cell Face Lift - described by Dr. Ellenbogen as, “The foremost plastic surgery procedure in stem cell face lifts today. The missing link was to “activate” the stem cells to initiate this powerful regenerative process.” This has been approved by the FDA and the Medical Board.

As Dr. Ellenbogen explains, “The patient’s own stem cells combined with low level laser, provide regenerative effects and a significantly better end result in face lift procedures, adding youth restorative qualities and longer lasting results.”

Dr. Ellenbogen has spent several years working with European scientists that spent years developing a systematic approach to activating one's own body's stem cells using laser light therapy, now Dr. Ellenbogen has brought this groundbreaking technique to his plastic surgery practice, Beverly Hills Body. The “Activated” Stem Cell Face Lift is achieved by adding the patient’s own growth factors from their blood and then exposing those stem cells to a special low-level laser, which “activates” the stem cells to start their reparative work at the sub-cellular level.

The stem cell face lift has been performed and misleadingly popularized in the media for the past several years by plastic surgeons using a very limited procedure, that involved - only extracting the fat and re-injecting it in to the face - but without freeing the stem cells from the fat and adding millions of additional healing stem cells. By contrast, the Ellenbogen method, using lower level laser, triggers and “activates” the stem cells, enhancing the ability of the cells to rejuvenate the tissues. As Dr. Ellenbogen states, “Patients receiving the older stem cell procedure, without the advantage of activation, will see little to none of the actual stem cell regenerative capacity and nothing in the long term, over time.”

The Activated Stem Cell Face Lift Process
A typical outpatient procedure can take three hours. The fat is gently harvested, using a medical procedure similar to liposuction. In a repeated purification process, the harvested fat is centrifuged (spun and separated) then treated with a dissolving solution to prepare extraction for stem cell isolation. The final step is to “activate” the stem cells using low-level frequency lasers after the addition of activation enhancers (protein growth factors from autologous platelet rich plasma). This multi step, exacting procedure is done in a laboratory within the operating room during the course of the operation.

Lastly, Dr. Ellenbogen injects the stem cells alone or mixed with more fat into the area of focus under anesthesia. In most cases a modified version of a standard face-lift has been surgically performed. “In using the patient’s own cells, no ethical or moral issues are involved and the initial improvement of the skin is quite remarkable. The pores are closer together and the skin is absolutely radiant, pigmentations fade and wrinkles are improved dramatically. The long term reparative effects are being evaluated but appear promising towards longer lasting results and repair of all tissue in contact with the stem cells,” says Dr. Ellenbogen.

Marketing Campaigns and Increasing Public Awareness Maintain Growth in the Minimally Invasive Surgery Spinal Fusion Market

Marketing Campaigns and Increasing Public Awareness Maintain Growth in the Minimally Invasive Surgery Spinal Fusion Market

Technical Learning Curve Will Hinder Market Growth Slightly According to a New Report by Millennium Research Group

Waltham, MA (PRWEB) May 29, 2006

Millennium Research Group (MRG), the global authority on medical technology market intelligence, reports that strong marketing efforts by leading manufacturers and surgeon demand for less invasive surgeries will help to maintain robust growth for the minimally invasive surgery (MIS) spinal fusion market over the next five years. Nevertheless, according to the new report US Markets for MIS Spinal Fusion Technologies 2006, the steep learning curve associated with MIS techniques will limit the adoption of MIS fusion.

“There are other roadblocks for this market as well,” said Sarit Daniel, senior analyst at Millennium Research Group. “The current lack of clinical data deters physicians from adopting MIS fusion procedures. Surgeons also continue to voice concern over the limited visual access to the surgical space.”

MRG’s US Markets for MIS Spinal Fusion Technologies 2006 covers various key industry competitors, such as Medtronic Sofamor Danek (MDT), DePuy (JNJ), Nuvasive (NUVA), Abbott Spine (ABT) and Endius.

About MIS Spinal Fusion Market

The MIS spinal fusion market, comprising traditional thoracolumbar implants (such as hooks, rods, and screws), interbody devices, and MIS access instrumentation, represents one of the most dynamic segments within the entire spinal implant market. Valued at almost $200 million in 2005, this market will experience significant growth over the next five years. In its comprehensive report, MRG defines an MIS spinal fusion as an instrumented fusion procedure in which specialized access instrumentation is used to minimize the amount of soft tissue damage and muscle retraction.

ISSA Explains How To Protect Yourself Against Fraudulent Supplement Claims

ISSA Explains How To Protect Yourself Against Fraudulent Supplement Claims

Although nutritional supplements are viewed as an important component of the International Sport Sciences Association's overall integrated approach to personal training, these products should not be taken without doing the proper research first. The International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) reminds consumers of a few easy rules to remember in order to protect yourself against fraudulent supplement claims.

Carpinteria, CA (PRWEB) September 27, 2007

Nutritional supplements are big business in the U. S. And while most Americans know that taking these products is not without risk, the FDA estimates that 38 million Americans have used a fraudulent health product within the past year. Though a recent FDA ruling will "ensure the quality of dietary supplements so that consumers can be confident that the products they purchase contain what is on the label," per an FDA spokesperson, consumers will still not be assured of the efficacy or safety of dietary supplements under the new ruling.

While supplementation is an integral part of the International Sports Sciences Association's Nutrition Approach, we remind consumers that the supplement industry thrives on individual hopes and dreams for life-altering changes. Desperation to fill the mold of the perfect body places many in a vulnerable position. This vulnerability manifests itself as trust in the manufacturers' claims. As a result, each year, Americans spend billions on the health and fitness industry in search of these easy results. Unfortunately these "easy" results rarely seem to be delivered.

That said, scientific studies show that in addition to well-known benefits of maintaining proper health, certain supplements on the market truly can enhance your physical and mental performance. Supplements are viewed as an important component of the overall ISSA integrated approach to personal training.

A few easy rules to remember with regard to supplementation are:

1. Supplement only for what you feel is lacking from a traditional diet - for instance, if you drink alcohol, you're depleting B vitamins, and if you smoke, your need for anti-oxidants is higher than average.

2. Gather all the information you can about a supplement you'd like to try. Always try to find a summary of the latest scientific thinking on the supplement, concentrating on those that have demonstrated a track record of reliability and integrity. The ISSA recommends referring to the following sources:

Http://www. ajcn. org/ (http://www. ajcn. org/)
Http://www. consumerlab. com/ (http://www. consumerlab. com/)
Http://www. fda. gov/ (http://www. fda. gov/) and
Http://www. americanheart. org/presenter. jhtml? identifier=1200010 (http://www. americanheart. org/presenter. jhtml? identifier=1200010)

3. Review all the information you have gathered, asking yourself two essential questions:

A. Is this supplement safe? If it's not, no matter how effective it might be (or appear to be), don't take it! If it is safe, move on to the next question.

B. Is this supplement effective? Remember that unless there is independent evidence that a supplement is effective, it's probably a waste of money.

4. Most importantly, Dr. Sal Arria, CEO of the ISSA warns, "Do not take the advertising hype you see in all of the magazines as gospel. Often times, articles have been authored by a doctor that's been hired by the supplement company so that illegal claims can be made 'safely.' Self-education is the best protection against fraudulent claims."

Rosacea Breakthrough

Rosacea Breakthrough

After 30 years of research on over 900 000 patients worldwide, this team of doctors discovered that the use of SEABUCKTHORN OIL kills the human demodex parasite and restore the skin to its natural beauty.

O (PRWEB) November 17, 2003

Ne of the most common yet often over diagnosed facial rashes is rosacea, a chronic, relapsing and potentially life-disruptive disorder of the facial skin that affects an estimated 14 million Americans. Many patients come to the clinic with redness on the cheeks, nose, chin or forehead that may come and go. The disease is more frequently diagnosed in women, but more severe symptoms tend to be seen in men.

Facial burning, stinging and itching are commonly reported by many rosacea patients. Certain rosacea sufferers may also experience some swelling (edema) in the face that may become noticeable as early as the initial stage of the disease. It is also believed that in some patients this swelling process may contribute to the development of excess tissue on the nose (rhinophyma), the condition that gave the late comedian W. C. Fields his trademark nose.

It is often thought that fair-skinned patients who tend to flush or blush easily are believed to be at greatest risk, while in fact facial redness from rosacea is simply more obvious in lighter skin. A normal blush or sunburn may appear the same, as can flushing from medications such as niacin or some antihypertension drugs. Flushing occurs when a large amount of blood flows through vessels quickly and the vessels expand under the skin to handle the flow. However, people with extensive sun damage, certain skin types and even treated rosacea patients can still have a red face or blood vessel streaks, which is often misdiagnosed as active rosacea. This is because visible blood vessels (telangiectasia) not only develop with rosacea (or were likely always there), but there may be some residual persistence of redness from the dilation of blood vessels during active disease.

Unfortunately these patients continue their medications unnecessarily while more appropriate treatments include camouflage makeup, sunscreens, a vascular laser, or intense pulsed light source.
Unlike some conditions, there are no histological, serological or other diagnostic tests for rosacea. A thorough examination of signs (appearance of bumps or pimples) and symptoms (redness, flushing, and swelling, burning, itching or stinging) as well as a medical history of potential triggers lead to the diagnosis. The National Rosacea Society suggests that the most common triggers of rosacea were sun exposure, emotional stress, hot or cold weather, wind, alcohol, spicy foods, heavy exercise, hot baths, heated beverages and certain skin-care products. In other words, almost anything that is potentially stimulating is bad news for rosacea. Unfortunately for some, certain conditions such as lupus, seborrheic dermatitis, drug eruptions, and even rare forms of lymphoma can look just like rosacea and are often missed by the untrained eye or worse when the patients are diagnosing themselves.

Rosacea is not an infectious disease, and there is no evidence that it can be spread by contact with the skin or through inhaling airborne bacteria. However, there has long been a theory that parasites in the hair follicles or oil glands or the face can stimulate inflammation by their activity or even their presence. One such organism is the Demodex folliculorum mite, which studies have shown to be more prevalent and active in rosacea patients then in control groups. Early vascular and connective tissue changes probably create a favorable setting for a growth of Demodex folliculorum. This may represent an important cofactor especially in papulopustular rosacea, in which a delayed hypersensitivity reaction is suspected, but it is not the cause of rosacea. On the other hand, clearing rosacea signs after oral tetracycline or sulfur ointment may not affect the resident demodex population.

The incidence of demodex is age related. It was found up to 20 years in about 25%, up to 50 years in about 30%, up to 80 years in about 50% and in all aged 90 or older. In healthy persons, one can find one or more Demodex in every tenth eyelash. This index rise with increasing age. In blepharitis or other external eye diseases, demodex is found in about every sixth eyelash. Therapy of chronic blepharitis in association with demodex may include antibiotics, steroids, Quecksilber 2% or Lindane. Massage of lid margins is essential because local treatment is of no effect as long as the mite remains deep in the pilosebaceous complex.

As rosacea is characterized by flare-ups and remissions, and research has shown that long-term medical therapy significantly increased the rate of remission in rosacea patients, it behooves patients to use a maintenance regimen. In a six-month multicenter clinical study, 42 percent of those not using medication had relapsed, compared to 23 percent of those who continued to apply a topical antibiotic. Therefore, treatment between flare-ups can prevent them. A rosacea facial care routine often starts with a gentle a refreshing cleansing of the face each morning. Sufferers should use a mild soap or cleanser that is not grainy or abrasive, and spread it with their fingertips. A soft pad or washcloth can also be used, but avoid rough washcloths, loofahs, brushes or sponges. The face should be rinsed with lukewarm water several times and blot dry with a thick cotton towel.

A new treatment available is seabuckthorn oil (Hippophae rhamnoides), which is the active ingredient in FACEDOCTOR soap. Its activity is targeted against the mite to reduce the inflammation under the skin and therefore provide relief of the mechanisms that cause the rosacea complex of symptoms. The advantage that patients find with the soap is the elegance of the cleansing vehicle in otherwise sensitive skin, the presence of Vitamin E and aloe Vera which provide additional healing properties, and other active ingredients such as astragalus membraceus and spirodela polyrhiza, useful yeasts that augment the activity of the seabuckthorn oil.

My patients have found this to be well tolerated and useful either as monotherapy or in addition to their other topical and/or systemic medications. We conducted a small placebo-controlled double-blind study in the office which showed that the majority of patients had a reduction of symptomatic erythema as well as reduction of response to triggers.
In conclusion, this study has demonstrated the Face Doctor line of soaps to be an effective natural weapon against the parasite and therefore the disease.

The Ritter M9 and M11Â’s new electronic air valve operation removes more than 94 percent of the air from the chamber during the pre-sterilization process, making the sterilizers more efficient overall while enhancing the productÂ’s reliability.

Once the sterilization process is complete, the door opens automatically and quietly to dissipate the steam and provide fast and efficient drying time of instruments. Midmark is the exclusive provider of this patented automatic opening sterilizer door design.

Ease of draining and filling is paramount to busy attendants and helps facilities adhere to regulations regarding a clean working environment. Both the M9Â’s and M11Â’s reservoir fill ports and drain tubes are in the front of the unit, not on top or in the back, to make this process more convenient and maximize space utilization.

The display has been updated to a new LCD text display system that indicates cycle selected, cycle temperature and exposure time through a printed display that prompts the user for directions. When the cycle enters sterilization mode and dry mode, the remaining cycle time is displayed with the temperature and pressure.

The LCD display also boasts programmable controls to create different cycle parameters for special sterilization needs, such as varying instrument cleaning instructions, in addition to the existing pre-programmed controls.

Maintenance prompts also help practices remember when to clean the units with a prompt each seven days for the weekly cleaning and once every 28 days for the monthly cleaning.

Simple Ultrasound Exam May Predict Osteoporosis Risk

Simple Ultrasound Exam May Predict Osteoporosis Risk

An ultrasound exam of the heel may be able to predict if a woman is at heightened risk for fractures due to osteoporosis, according to a new multicenter study being published in the July issue of the journal Radiology.

Oak Brook, IL (Vocus) June 24, 2008

An ultrasound exam of the heel may be able to predict if a woman is at heightened risk for fractures due to osteoporosis, according to a new multicenter study being published in the July issue of the journal Radiology. Along with certain risk factors, including age or recent fall, radiation-free ultrasound of the heel may be used to better select women who need further bone density testing, such as a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) exam.

“Osteoporosis is a major public health issue expected to increase in association with worldwide aging of the population,” said the study’s lead author Idris Guessous, M. D., senior research fellow in the Department of Internal Medicine at Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland. “The incidence of osteoporosis will outpace economic resources, and the development of strategies to better identify women who need to be tested is crucial.”

Osteoporosis is a disease that is characterized by low bone mass and the deterioration of bone tissue and is a major public health threat. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 10 million Americans currently have osteoporosis and approximately 34 million more are estimated to have low bone mass, increasing their risk of developing the disease. Eighty percent of those affected are women.

“Patients with osteoporosis are not optimally treated because of a lack of general awareness,” Dr. Guessous said. “A simple prediction rule might be a useful clinical tool for healthcare providers to optimize osteoporosis screening.”

In the three-year multicenter study, 6,174 women age 70 to 85 with no previous formal diagnosis of osteoporosis were screened with heel-bone quantitative ultrasound (QUS), a diagnostic test used to assess bone density. QUS was used to calculate the stiffness index, which is an indicator of bone strength, at the heel. Researchers added in risk factors such as age, history of fractures or a recent fall to the results of the heel-bone ultrasound to develop a predictive rule to estimate the risk of fractures. The results showed that 1,464 women (23.7 percent) were considered lower risk and 4,710 (76.3 percent) were considered higher risk.

Study participants where mailed questionnaires every six months for up to 32 months to record any changes in medical conditions, including illness, changes in medications or any fracture. If a fracture had occurred, the patients were asked to specify the fracture’s precise location and trauma level and to include a medical report from the physician in charge.

In the group of higher risk women, 290 (6.1 percent) developed fractures whereas only 27 (1.8 percent) of the women in the lower risk group developed fractures. Among the 66 women who developed a hip fracture, 60 (90 percent) were in the higher risk group.

The results show that heel QUS is not only effective at identifying high-risk patients who should receive further testing, but also may be helpful in identifying patients for whom further testing can be avoided.

“Heel QUS in conjunction with clinical risk factors can be used to identify a population at a very low fracture probability in which no further diagnostic evaluation may be necessary,” Dr. Guessous said.

AT A GLANCE
A new multicenter study has found that heel ultrasound can help predict fractures due to osteoporosis.

A “predictive rule” was developed to determine the risk for fractures using heel ultrasound and other factors, such as age or recent fall.

Approximately 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and approximately 34 million more are at risk. Eighty percent of those affected are women.
