Of the various activities presented, the skydiving segment, delivered by skydiving coach, Dan McAllister, of Atlanta Skydiving Center, appeared to garner the most interest.

During a video presentation showcasing young people skydiving at Atlanta Skydiving Center, the students’ eyes were glued to the projection screen. The Wheeler High School students sat quietly and spellbound as the young people in the video leapt out of a plane, freefalling through the fathomless sky.

After the video, McAllister discussed the enthralling world of skydiving. McAllister tapped his wealth of knowledge, garnered from almost 1,000 jumps, to paint a verbal portrait of skydiving enthusiasts.

McAllister ended his presentation by fielding the eager students’ questions.

The students inquired about such items as:

What happens if you jump out of a plane and faint before you open your parachute? (Answer: Today, due to advanced technology in the sport of skydiving, if a skydiver does not open his or her main parachute, the reserve chute will automatically deploy at 1,000 feet.)

How fast does a person fall through the air before opening the parachute? (Answer: Around 125 miles an hour)

Do people ever die when skydiving? (Answer: Yes, but a person’s chances of being hit by lightning and bitten by a shark at the same time are greater than the chance of dying while skydiving.)

The Adolescent Health and Youth Development Center, the YMCA of East Cobb County, and Hands on Atlanta also presented positive lifestyle activities at the “Lunch and Learn.”

Dentists are guaranteed immediate payment, while patients get quick financing to pay for expensive dental procedures that may not be covered by insurance due to policy restrictions and limitations.

The only dental financing program designed and managed by dentists in Canada, the PatientLink Plan provides loans up to $50,000 and includes fast credit approvals and low fixed interest rates starting at 9.9 per cent. The plan covers all procedures over $2,500 such as orthodontic and cosmetic work, dentures, root canals and dental implants. Patients are able to pay over a period ranging from six months to fix years and can pay off the loan at any time without penalty.

Dr. Edward Lowe, a PatientLink partner who heads the West End Dental Centre in Vancouver notes, "Since the time we launched the program back in 2000, dramatic advances in dental technology have continued to drive up the cost of delivering dental care, while basic dental insurance has not kept pace."

PatientLink was started ten years ago by a group of Vancouver dentists who were surprised to discover that twenty per cent of their patients were not getting the dental procedures they needed due to money concerns. Market research gathered by PatientLink shows that another 30 per cent don't even visit the dentist - cost being one of the reasons. "In a tough economy, expensive dental procedures can fall low on the priority list pretty quickly. It's common for patients to use high interest loans or credit cards to pay dental bills or avoid the dentist altogether, which can have greater health implications," Dr. Lowe says.

PatientLink also benefits dentists who may have trouble collecting for procedures. Many dentists will accept post-dated cheques in lieu of insurance coverage, which can turn into an administrative nightmare and financial liability. "Statics show that five per cent of dentists' invoices never get paid," Dr. Lowe says. "Most dentists don't have the time or resources for aggressive credit collections. This not only compromises their practice, but the patients themselves, who may be reluctant to return for follow up or future treatment."

The new code will comprise the most-current thinking on pool and spa safety, energy efficiency and best practices. It will be the only code that addresses all types of pools, spas and hot tubs — both public and residential — as well as aquatic recreation facilities.

“The ICC develops codes that focus on keeping people safe where they live, work and play,” said Jay Peters, Code Council Plumbing, Mechanical and Fuel Gas Group (PMG) Executive Director. “This new pool and spa code in particular will impact safety as soon as it is put into use because it will become part of codes that are already adopted in 50 states.”

This landmark code will draw on APSP’s ANSI-approved American National Standards for pools, spas, hot tubs and other recreational water along with ICC’s expertise in building-safety codes, fire-prevention codes and energy-efficiency codes for residential and commercial construction. The provisions of the code will increase consistency in pool and spa construction, maintenance and operation across the country and internationally.

“Finally, builders, manufacturers and code officials will have a uniform reference wherever the ICC codes are in use,” said Carvin DiGiovanni, Senior Director of Technical and Standards for APSP. “We are looking forward to getting started on the development of what promises to be the most comprehensive pool and spa code possible.”

Simply wipe it clean with a damp sponge or cloth and it will be as good as new. These plans pay for diabetic treatment after 6 months. But as the name implies, these are limited insurance policies that will not pay for catastrophic bills. Health Savings Accounts - Individual health insurance plans for diabetics that allow participation in the Health Savings Account (HSA) program are not available yet. There are exceptions in a few states, but the cost of this coverage is still so high that these plans might as well not even be available. This may change in the future if Congress gets around to loosening HSA laws. Many medications, which are beneficial to others, are inappropriate for seniors and can be deadly if taken in combination with other remedies. Over-the-counter medications, vitamins, herbs, sedatives, antidepressants, pain medication and even prescription medications can cause adverse drug reactions and side effects resulting in fatal or life-threatening injuries.

Frequently, the reactions to these medications include dizziness, instability with walking, falling, and disorientation or confusion. These signs are often dismissed simply as the consequences of growing older, or as symptoms of another disease which may result in additional medications being prescribed. The following are measures that seniors and their families can take to avoid a potential problem:

1. Make sure the individual can read the medication labels. Often they attempt to do so without their glasses or in the dark, causing mistakes in taking the correct medication or dose of medication.

2. A record of all medications, along with the dose and time they are supposed to be taken, should be kept and updated frequently. Include all over-the-counter drugs and all prescribed medications from each physician the individual sees for care. This record should be taken to each doctorÂ’s visit to assist with the coordination of care.

3. Store all medications in the original containers and in the same area. Seniors often reach for a medication in a “familiar location” and if it has been moved from its usual place, they may accidentally pick something else up by mistake. This will also eliminate the potential for outdated drugs to accumulate and inadvertently be taken.

4. Choose an individual to coordinate and manage the care of the senior with all of the doctors that they see and the medications they take and select a single pharmacy to fill all prescriptions. Often times a family member or reliable friend can assist in this process, or you can hire a consulting pharmacist or a geriatric care manager to assist.

5. Search the web for general information on medications and drug interactions or expected geriatric reactions. Some examples of websites that can help include: www. ccgp. org, www. drugdigest. org, www. webmd. com and www. seniorcarepharmacist. com.

Make certain the senior understands that misusing medications is a leading cause of death in their age group. Taking a variety of different prescriptions may be necessary in a handful of patients.
