M. LaCourt takes us on a literary journey few have imagined. The Prize is a courageous and compelling story that challenges all the taken-for-granted "truths" about bullies and victims. The Prize, however, is far more than an exposé of the inadequacies of traditional ideas about bullying. It is first and foremost a well-crafted novel that people of all ages will find intriguing.

The sixty-year-old protagonists—one a childhood bully, one a childhood victim—think adults can learn from kids who behave as they did when they were youths. They plot a way to test their radical idea. Sydney Schuster and John Murphy vacillate between wringing their hands quietly and meddling with the experiment when the students in the Schuster/Murphy Experimental School get themselves into all manner of trouble.

Stemming from author M. LaCourt's successful "Live and Let Live" bully prevention program, this fictionalized account incorporates many of the strategies people of all ages can use to foster healthier relationships in schools, workplaces, homes, and anywhere people interact with one another. LaCourt emphasizes the concept of titt for tatt as a basic skill of cooperation, where bullies as well as victims learn to allow their internal sense of justice to prevail and thus prevent situations from escalating into undue violence and other negative behaviors.

In an effort to expand her bully-prevention efforts, LaCourt invites educators to participate in a project designed to Promote Cooperation and Literacy in Our Schools. The author will donate ten copies of The Prize to fifty school libraries where an adult educator will lead a reading/discussion group with ten students and submit feedback to the author about the project. Anyone interested in participating can contact the author at lacourt@wi. rr. com or 262-797-9857 for a free copy of the book before making a commitment to the project.

What Readers Have to Say about The PrizeÂ

"LaCourt takes us from peer pressure–filled schools to dysfunctional homes and back again. She crafts each complex character carefully so that we not only see the stereotypical public masks they use to cope, but also their vulnerable natures within." —Deborah Turner, University of California Santa Cruz Multicultural Outreach Librarian

"This book is a real gift to every teen who struggles with peer relationships. For the rest of us, it is the perfect antidote to the dreary message of The Lord of the Flies. The Prize demonstrates that self-interest is not a human trait to be rejected or restrained. Rather, it is the essence of what makes cooperation work. Kudos to LaCourt for the creative way she shares a profound insight into human nature." —Deborah Bishop, M. A., Couples and Family Counselor

"The Prize is a seductive page-turner that takes a deep look into virtue and decision-making. Honestly describes the complexity of relationships and the hardship that occurs when one is being bullied? Five Stars for The Prize!" —Rachel Johnson, age 13, New Moon Magazine Girl's Editorial Board Member

"The story is filled with wonderful twists and turns. The author has captured the dialogue and characterizations of the troubled youth in a superlative manner. This is an excellent teaching tool. I would put it on the same level as Holes in its appeal to both the teaching and the young adult communities. The development of the relationships is done in a wonderfully ironic fashion. We rated this book a very high four hearts." —Bob Spear, Book Sense Review

AllMed's Hospital Peer Review White Paper Now Available

Best Practices in Hospital Peer Review White Paper Now Available from AllMed Healthcare Management. White Paper Provides Insight into How Independent Review Organizations (IROs) Can Help Ease Tensions in Hospital Peer Review Process

Portland, OR (PRWEB) October 25, 2004

AllMed Healthcare Management, a leading Independent Review Organization (IRO), today announced the availability of its white paper entitled, “Best Practices in Hospital Peer Review.” The white paper provides insights into how Independent Review Organizations (IROs) can help ease the tensions and conflicts typically found in today’s hospital peer review system.

“The current hospital peer review system created by Congress was intended to increase quality of care for all Americans,” said Dr. Skip Freedman. “Unfortunately, Congress did not foresee that hospital peer review actually puts physicians into an environment where political, economic and personality conflicts can easily render the process ineffective.”

Dr. Freedman said that when done properly, hospital peer review is a worthwhile process that can help doctors and physicians work better together. The “Best Practices Hospital Peer Review White Paper” offered by AllMed illustrates how this is possible and addresses the following issues:

Backlash – What are the perceived penalties in today’s hospital quality management systems?  Risk Management – Why is peer review imperative to risk management for the hospital?  Use of Outside Parties – Why it’s important to include outside parties in the hospital peer review process?  Benefits of Using an Independent Review Organization (IRO) – What are the possible cost and time savings when using an Independent Review Organization (IRO)?

The white paper also provides a list of best practices that hospital and providers alike should be aware of to implement an effective hospital peer review process.

More information on AllMed’s hospital peer review services and a free, downloadabe copy of the “Best Practices Hospital Peer Review White Paper” can be found on AllMed’s web site at http://www. allmedmd. com (http://www. allmedmd. com).

Out-of-Pocket Costs an Expected Part of Budgeting for Eldercare

Out-of-Pocket Costs an Expected Part of Budgeting for Eldercare

ElderCarelink Survey Shows Most are Prepared for Out-of-Pocket and Private Payments When Considering Eldercare Services

Ashland, Massachusetts (PRWEB) March 6, 2006

Those seeking eldercare services such as home care and assisted living (http://www. eldercarelink. com) plan on paying out-of-pocket costs, according to the latest data gathered by ElderCarelink, a national eldercare referral service which spots trends and identifies growing needs of seniors and caregivers. The ElderCarelink survey indicates that 87% of consumers in need of care or anticipating home health care, adult day care, assisted living and other senior services (http://www. eldercarelink. com) have budgeted for out-of-pocket costs. In addition, 40% of respondents are prepared to pay for care exclusively with private funds, followed by 32% of consumers who will rely on a combination of private payments and insurance. Other methods of funding represented in the ElderCarelink study were Medicare, Medicaid and Long Term Care insurance.

In most cases, home care, long-term care facilities and adult day care services are not covered by Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance. This, coupled with gaps in insurance coverage, has caused families to increasingly rely less on outside sources of payment. With the majority of consumers expecting to pay out-of-pocket for all or some of their long term care expenses (http://www. eldercarelink. com), it’s increasingly clear that families are now recognizing that they will need to prepare for this reality. For many, paying out-of-pocket will influence decisions about types of service, length of stay and location of care, whether home health care, elder day care or living assistance.

“With increasing reliance on out-of-pocket expenditures to cover costs of eldercare, it is more important than ever for families to choose the best eldercare providers for their specific needs - providers who cannot only deliver the necessary services but who can do so at a price that the family can afford,” said Robert F. Brooks, CEO of ElderCarelink. “As budgeting for senior care becomes more common, better resources for seeking options for cost-effective solutions that meet individual needs will become even more of a priority.” The survey is part of the ElderCarelink service, which connects consumers and families seeking eldercare products and services with the most appropriate provider based on their needs. ElderCarelink takes into account financial needs as well as individual care needs, and includes options for insurance services and financial planning.
