NAMI Blog: Peer Education and Support Empowers Caregivers, Inspires Mental Health Advocates

NAMI Blog: Peer Education and Support Empowers Caregivers, Inspires Mental Health Advocates

Programs play a critical role in supporting families

Arlington, VA (PRWEB) October 8, 2010

In the newest NAMI Blog entry, Joyce Burland, director of the NAMI Education, Training & Peer Support Center, reflects on the growth of NAMI’s Family-to-Family program and how such programs play a critical role in supporting families during a time when states mental health budgets are in jeopardy nationwide.

Family-to-Family is a free, 12-week educational course led by trained family members who are experienced in caring for a loved one with a serious mental illness such as major depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Program participants receive current information on serious mental illness, learn about proven treatments, develop problem-solving skills and communication techniques and explore local community services and supports.

“The families we teach need help they cannot find from community clinics and providers working overtime to manage funding cutbacks further shredding the safety net which now exists,” Burland writes.

“This is where the ‘personal gets political,’ for we cannot avoid coming clean with the families we teach that the services they require are services they often can’t get, and to secure them we must still fight for them. That’s the reason why NAMI members advocate: That’s why we’re always fighting in state legislatures not to cut funding. We know squeaky wheels get the grease and so we encourage people to squeak.”

The impact of Family-to-Family courses is far-reaching, among families, friends and communities. Burland notes, “We aren’t just teaching the people in the room—they, in turn, are reaching out to the rest of the family.”

Each year, NAMI offers approximately 800 Family-to-Family classes in 49 states. The class is offered in both English and Spanish. Find a local class.

Guaranteed Property Inspection Launches Neighborhood Environmental Report -- An Environmental Due Diligence Report For Residential Real Estate

Guaranteed Property Inspection Launches Neighborhood Environmental Report -- An Environmental Due Diligence Report For Residential Real Estate

Guaranteed Property Inspection and Mold Investigation Inc., an industry leader in home inspection / environmental services, and Environmental Data Resources, Inc. (EDR), the leading national provider of environmental risk information, jointly announced today that they will offer their Neighborhood Environmental Report™ to residential real estate markets in Southern California. The report is being offered to meet growing demand for pre-purchase information for real estate agents, loan brokers, home-buyers and home sellers

Irving, CA (PRWEB) April 4, 2007

Starting immediately, real estate professionals, home-buyers and sellers in the U. S. who use Guaranteed Property Inspection and Mold Investigation for their home inspections will have access to a Neighborhood Environmental Report™, which provides important information on known and potential contamination that exists on or in the vicinity of a property.

"Guaranteed Property is very excited to work with EDR to be the first to provide this valuable service to real estate professionals, home-buyers and home sellers," said Steve Zivolich, Senior Inspector at Guaranteed Property. "While the reports often give neighborhoods a clean bill of health, real estate professionals and home-buyers are always much better off uncovering any potential environmental issues up front, as opposed to retroactively addressing a problem after a sale or inspection has been completed. However, homes located in higher population or light industrial areas are more likely to have environmental concerns identified by the report."

Compiling data from federal, state, local and private databases, Neighborhood Environmental Reports™ provide records of contamination that could cause serious health problems as well as property devaluation. Homes that are contaminated often show no visible signs of the dangers they pose to residents through toxic air, water or soil problems.

Examples of contaminants the report screens for include leaking underground storage tanks, landfills, defense sites, hazardous waste sites, Superfund sites and former meth-amphetamine ("meth") drug laboratory.

Ensuring that home-buyers are aware of these types of environmental hazards has been identified as an important issue by several state legislatures including Arizona, California, Connecticut and Minnesota, as the potential effects to personal health and property value garner more attention from local communities across the country.

"For over fifteen years, environmental information has been a part of commercial real estate transactions. EDR created this report in response to the growing trend of residential buyers wanting or even expecting increasing amounts of information before making important decisions; whether purchasing a car, making a health-related decision or investing in a home," said Robert Barber, CEO of EDR. "Part of this 'due diligence' trend is an increasing demand for expertly prepared environmental information."

Ultimate Pet Products Releases New Cat & Kitten Litter

Ultimate Pet Products Releases New Cat & Kitten Litter

Ultimate Pet Products of Southern California has announced the release of its new Ultimate Cat & Kitten Litter. Amazing new technology absorbs odor instantly and one 4 lb bag will last the average cat 1 month.

(PRWEB) April 4, 2005

Silica Cat Litter is a huge growth area in the Pet industry with sales increasing year on year. Traditionally the silica granules are between 2 and 5 mm in diameter making them unsuitable for use with kittens under the age of 8 weeks because of ingestion problems and the fact that they just donÂ’t support the texture on their small paws.

Vetworld Inc. of Californie through its subsidiary Ultimate Pet Products, has announced the release of their NEW Ultimate Cat and Kitten Litter which is specially designed for use with kittens of all ages. Based on traditional silica, it has the same odor retention properties, but Ultimate is different because of it’s size, 0.5 – 1.00 mm in diameter.

CEO of Vetworld, Richard Bultman, said “Research has shown that one of the preferred mediums by cats is sand. Ultimate Cat and Kitten Litter is just that, sand only made with silica. Our tests have shown remarkable results with no odor coming from the litter tray from urine or solids. It doesn’t clump so there’s no waste. The only maintenance is to remove solids and stir the granules regularly. A 4lb bag will last a healthy 8lb cat for 4 weeks so it’s cost effective. The granules are completely inert and are safe to throw on the garden compost after use where they will decompost back to their original constituents, sand and water.”

Trials have been carried out and the product carries a “Vets Choice” seal of approval. Here’s what Dr. Tracy McFarland, DVM, CVA, the Cat Doctor, says about Ultimate Cat and Kitten Litter. “Ultimate Cat & Kitten Litter is a truly revolutionary advance in litter technology. Instead of urine clumps to scoop or smelly wet clay litter, you have dry non-smelly stools to scoop every day or two and a box to empty every month. Because the litter subtly changes color, you know that your cat is urinating in the box. Since this litter immediately absorbs the urine’s moisture and odor, I can’t wait to tell my clients about Ultimate Cat & Kitten Litter – its going to solve litter box problems.”

The first in the range is the 4lb Cat and Kitten Litter shortly to be followed by a slightly larger granuled Cat Litter and a Pet Litter which can be used by small domestic pets such as rats, hamsters, gerbils etc.
