An interview with Vermont Governor Jim Douglas is now available in a podcast format on Vermont Viewpoint Online. Vermont Viewpoint Online is a non-partisan, internet political radio show.
During the interview, Gov. Douglas talks about many of the issues facing Vermont now and in the near future. Of considerable concern to the governor is the loss of the state’s young people as they leave either for college or to find jobs or affordable housing. He says that the state needs to move forward on his proposed Agenda for Affordability which he presented during his State of The State Address in January, adding that he was disappointed that the legislature did not take up his suggestions during this last session. One of the ideas that Douglas talks about during the interview with host Don Lewellen is the possibility of a land bank using state owned property to make housing more affordable. He encourages municipalities to also join in.
Douglas, who has been active in politics since he stuffed envelopes at a GOP headquarter while in Junior High, also discusses in the interview the issues of the high cost of health insurance, the need to cap property taxes, making Vermont more business-friendly, and Civil Confinement - his plan for holding convicted sexual offenders until they receive treatment.
Douglas, who is serving his second term as governor of Vermont, is running for a third term. In the November election he will face Scudder Parker (D), Bob Skold (Liberty Union) and Cris Ericson (Marijuana).
