The law firm of Hissey Kientz, LLP has announced the launch of its new website, DePuy Hip Replacement Lawyers (http://www. depuyhipreplacementlawyers. com). The site will serve as an information resource for patients who received one of the recently recalled DePuy hip implants.

DePuy Orthopaedics—a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson—recalled its DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and its ASR Hip Resurfacing System hip device in August 2010 due to a higher-than-expected rate of revision surgery among patients who received the product. To date, one out of every eight patients who received one of the two DePuy hip replacements has required surgery within five years to replace the device—more than twice the expected failure rate.

Researchers from the University of Oxford and the University of British Columbia have speculated that problems with devices such as the DePuy implants may be due to a design flaw. The recalled DePuy hip implants consist of a metal ball and socket component. In some patients, the movement of the ball and socket against each other can cause metal particles to be released into the body, causing hip pain, swelling or walking problems that may require surgery.

In a March 2010 article published by the New York Times, some health experts stated that DePuy and Johnson & Johnson should have moved sooner to recall the two hip implants. The Food and Drug Administration received more than 400 reports of problems with DePuy hip replacements before they were recalled in the U. S. Several DuPuy patients have filed lawsuits against the company, alleging that it knew about problems with the hip devices more than two years before the recall notice was issued.
