“We’re creating a cultural shift in the Black community to reconsider marriage and celebrate the joy that exists in spite of the pain we often experience,” explained Wedded Bliss founder, Nisa Islam Muhammad.

“It is a proven fact that Black married men make more money, they are greater accumulators of wealth, as well as live longer and healthier. Further, successful marriages free women from the burden of parenting and providing at the same time. It provides children with the comfort of both financial and emotional stability and marriage gives children access to the two most important people in their lives on a day-to-day basis,” Ms. Muhammad said.

The Black community has suffered for years with declining marriage rates, increasing divorces and nearly 70 percent of their children being born out of wedlock, according to government figures. Black women are the most unpartnered group in the country, the US Census Bureau reports.

Marriage activists in Oakland, California, plan a three-day event that kicks off March 25 and includes workshops, special guest speakers and awards. “We want to change our community with the information necessary to have good marriages,” said Rev. Dion Evans, pastor of Oakland's Chosen Vessels Church.

In Chicago, Joseph Strickland is planning the Metropolitan Area Group for Igniting Civilization event. “There is much to celebrate. We have people who have survived adultery, prison, financial crises, sickness, even divorce and remarriage to the same person.”

Nichol Whiteman, Group Circulation Sales Manager for BLACK ENTERPRISE Magazine, explained the need for their involvement with BMD. "Disciplined saving and investing is one of the most important steps married couples can take to achieve wealth, financial freedom and true happiness.”

“As a sponsor of Black Marriage Day, we encourage married couples everywhere to read BLACK ENTERPRISE on a regular basis and create a formula for financial success in their own lives. The Black Wealth Initiative, introduced by BLACK ENTERPRISE Magazine in 2000, is a program designed to provide African Americans with the tools essential to seeking and acquiring this financial empowerment."

“Marriage benefits everyone, because stable families create the social and economic foundation for a stable community,” Ms. Muhammad said. “Black Marriage Day is a continuation of Wedded Bliss Foundation’s goal to ignite the fire of desire for happy, successful marriages all over the country.”
