The dental assistant students at Pima Medical Institute, 3350 E. Grant Road, Suite 200 want to go on the road to visit local schools and teach the youngsters how to properly take care of their teeth this spring.
Teachers, or others who work with children, are encouraged to call Aurelia Bynre at 520-326-1600 to set up an appointment to have the dental assistant students interact with the children while providing useful information on proper oral hygiene.
“Children eat a lot of sweets, especially around Easter time, and teaching them how to care for their teeth at an early age can have positive, long-term effects,” said Don Esham, campus director for the Tucson medical career college. “At Pima Medical Institute we have the dual benefit of providing a needed service for the community, as well as giving our dental assistant hands-on experience in their chosen field. It’s really a win/win situation for everyone involved.”
The training period for dental assistants is 30 weeks for day classes for day classes, or 33 weeks for evening classes. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for dental assistants is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2012.
The campus offers programs for dental assistant, medical assistant, medical administrative assistant, health unit coordinator, pharmacy technician, phlebotomy technician, physical therapist assistant, radiography, respiratory therapy and veterinary assistant.
