Unveiling a Teenage Girl’s Skeleton in the Closet
Self-Published author reminds readers of the dangers of getting too skinny in eye-opening new book.
Mesa, AZ (Vocus) August 28, 2010
Touching on one of today’s most disturbing issues, author Alejandra O. Reed pens down a heartrending tale of friendship, faith, and self-identification. In Skeleton in the Closet, her new book released through Xlibris, she fearlessly raises awareness on how media contributes to teenagers’ weight-related diseases, including those that are serious enough to put an end to their young—and supposedly promising lives.
Margo is confused. A high school student, she is caught between protecting her friend’s secret and doing the right thing. Her fifteen-year-old and longtime friend, Bobbi, has not been herself lately. She, however, knows that what has been causing this is Bobbi’s unsafe way of losing weight. She is also aware that her friend, who was once a friendly, God-fearing girl, has turned into an overly self-conscious teenager who believes that being beautiful means being skinny. Bobbi has been deliberately throwing up and taking laxatives. Her obsession has not only driven her to bad and deceitful company, but is likewise gradually affecting her health. Together with another childhood friend, Margo takes on the duty to help Bobbi and regain her self-confidence without putting her life into danger. But can they do it before it’s too late?
Written in a lighthearted manner, yet substantially insightful, Skeleton in the Closet follows the plight of one teenager whose social norms led her to give up her true happiness and risk her own life. It conveys how media is incorrectly glamorizing and popularizing rail-thin models and actresses, which causes young minds to have an alarming desire to be skeletons. An eye-opening and inspiring book, it is highly recommended to guardians, parents, teenagers, and children.
Skeleton in the Closet will be featured at this year’s Illinois Library Association Book Exhibit in Chicago, IL on September 29-30, 2010. For more information, log on to Xlibris. com (http://www2.xlibris. com/bookstore/bookdisplay. aspx? bookid=69247).
