Late Spring Lawn Care Tips Help Prepare Lawn for Summer Heat

Late spring requires more careful lawn management and maintenance to keep lawns looking healthy and beautiful through the rest of the season.

Holmdel, NJ (PRWEB) June 1, 2006

With spring in full bloom, it’s time to fertilize your lawn with formulations designed to provide a controlled feeding. You have the choice of regular fertilizers or new natural fertilizers, and either type will help ensure that your grass will withstand summer stresses and remain lush and beautiful all year long.

Additionally, an application of broadleaf weed controls should be applied, but keep in mind, it takes several days for weeds to begin to twist, curl and wither away. If the application is done properly, spot weed control should be all that’s necessary for the rest of the season and into the summer.

The rainfall that normally occurs at this time of the year should be sufficient for proper growth. If there’s less rain than normal, Lawn Doctor recommends watering heavily enough to wet the soil to a depth of six to eight inches. Lighter water can produce shallow roots.

Lawn Doctor also recommends paying careful attention to mowing at this time of the year, to avoid scalping grass that’s growing faster than normal because of rains. Raise your mower height, and gradually lower it until the cut is back at its original height. In addition, avoid mowing wet grass, to prevent clumping and the possibility of lawn disease. Most lawn diseases are weather-related and will disappear when the weather changes. Fungicides are not normally recommended, but controls can be applied on a curative basis, if necessary.

Remember, it’s a good practice to keep children and pets off treated lawns until they’ve been thoroughly watered, so the materials penetrate into the soil and are completely dry.
