Birmingham Plastic Surgeon Receives Breast Cancer Awareness Award

In recognition of his work in the fight against breast cancer, Birmingham plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Beckenstein has received the BMW Ultimate Drive Local Hero Award, an honor bestowed in conjunction with Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Birmingham, Alabama (PRWEB) April 10, 2008

BMW's "Local Hero" award has been given to Dr. Michael S. Beckenstein (www. msbmd. com), whose practice offers reconstructive and cosmetic surgery in Birmingham for women and men from all walks of life. The award, which was established to raise awareness for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, recognizes Dr. Beckenstein's work to help eradicate breast cancer.

"I'm honored to be chosen as a 'Hero' in the local community," says Dr. Beckenstein. "While I've done quite a bit to help women get the breast cancer resources they need, the reality is that there are hundreds of dedicated men and women in Birmingham who devote their time to raising awareness and finding a cure. I feel that anyone out there making a difference on this issue should be considered a 'Hero.'"

Dr. Beckenstein is highly regarded for founding and continuing to operate the Breast Surgery Center of Alabama in conjunction with his reconstructive and cosmetic surgery practice in Birmingham. At the Center, a number of special services are offered for comprehensive breast cancer care. These services include a support system that pairs patients with similar backgrounds, emotional counseling specifically targeted to the needs of women with breast cancer, and physical therapy using customized treatment protocols.

"My staff and I have worked hard to make the Breast Surgery Center of Alabama a total success," says Dr. Beckenstein. "While I dedicate a large part of my practice to cosmetic surgery for Birmingham residents and believe in the strength and vitality that comes from looking your best, my specialty training and my ongoing passion remain in helping people live healthier, happier lives through reconstructive surgery."

The BMW Ultimate Drive is a grassroots program to raise awareness of breast cancer issues and raise money to support Susan G. Komen for the Cure. During the event, members of the local community test drive vehicles, with $1.00 donated to the foundation for every mile driven. The program has raised more than $11,000,000 for breast cancer research and awareness since it began in 1997.

In addition to receiving the "Local Hero" award, Birmingham plastic surgeon Dr. Beckenstein had his photograph affixed to the Signature Vehicle, which will showcase pictures of people across the country who have helped in the effort to find a breast cancer cure.

This award is not the first Dr. Beckenstein has received for his efforts to help women battling breast cancer. He was also awarded the prestigious Life Inspiration Award by the American Cancer Society for the compassionate care he provides his patients. With his recognized leadership in breast cancer care and breast reconstruction, Dr. Beckenstein is the doctor of choice for many women who have chosen breast reconstruction.

Dr. Michael S. Beckenstein (www. msbmd. com) is a board-certified Birmingham plastic surgeon whose Alabama practice offers a complete line of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery, in addition to advanced skin care options. Dr. Beckenstein completed 4 post-graduate plastic surgery fellowships, with 3 of these focusing on breast reconstruction techniques. He is board-certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery and author of over 4 dozen papers, publications, and textbook chapters.
