Northeast Analytical, Inc. (NEA), an independent testing laboratory specializing in high resolution PCB analysis and custom analytical testing, is pleased to announce its dedicated Volatile testing program for benzene. Under this program products (soda, sports drinks, juice drinks and juices) that have the potential for forming benzene can be tested.
“With the renewed interest from the FDA and the public arising from tests conducted these past few months showing beverages with benzene ranging from 2 PPB to 20PPB NEA has increased its services to include the food/ beverage industries” said Robert Wagner, President of NEA.
Benzene a known cancer-causing chemical was found in sodas 16 years ago and is also found naturally in some vegetables and fruits. Benzene can be formed in beverages from a chemical reaction that takes place when ascorbic acid (vitamin C) reacts with metals like copper or iron found in water creating “free radicals”. At the same time potassium benzoate or sodium benzoate preservative breaks down to form benzoic acid. The “free radicals” attack the benzoic acid eliminating carbon dioxide and forming benzene.
NEA analyzes for benzene by GC/MS with method detection limits down to 0.2 PPB; well below the USEPA drinking water limit of 5 PPB.
NEA’s comprehensive approach is carefully evaluated to insure that the quality of analyses required to substantially reduce the risk of chemical residue contamination is achieved and maintained.
NEA is a full-service independent laboratory certified by the NYS Department Health and the National Environmental Laboratory Approval Program (NELAP).
