Little India Foundation announces the launching of its website http://www. littleindia. org (http://www. littleindia. org). The website has two main objectives -- global dissemination of information on the basics of Hinduism and its culture for Hindus and non-Hindus alike, and to report on the progress of its projects to help poor and needy in India.
Little India Foundation (LIF) is a not-for-profit organization founded in Chicago in 1977. The objective was to help immigrant Hindus retain their religion and culture through successive generations. Therefore the emphasis was on teaching younger immigrant children the essentials of the religion.
As the immigrant community grew in different parts of the world it also became apparent that non-Hindus also get a better understanding of the world’s oldest religion in the interest of developing pluralistic societies. LIF has expanded its activities to meet that need through publications on its website.
At the same time the need for improving the existing living conditions in rural India remained urgent. Therefore the Foundation decided to start projects in India for improving education, health, and economic conditions in rural areas. Currently it has pilot projects in the state of Maharashtra.
Community volunteers do the work and the emphasis is on developing local resources using indigenous products and skills. An agricultural college project is underway to cultivate herbal plants to be used in pharmaceutical products. In another project LIF is supporting an orphanage cum elementary school for children from remote tribal areas.
The existing schools from elementary to college levels are being helped by volunteer teachers and also through scholarships for students from needy families. Again the emphasis is on creating motivation for improving the living conditions through better utilization of the local resources.
There is a plan for starting a school based on the ancient gurukul system incorporating some modern concepts as well. If the pilot project succeeds, the plan would be extended to the rest of the state and, eventually to other states as well.
As the project activities expand the resources required to carry on the work will increase immensely. The organization will need global support especially from Indians living or settled outside India. It is the hope of the Foundation that people would see these activities as a worthy cause and lend their unqualified support. For further information please contact us.
